This volume sets out to re-examine what ancient people - primarily those in ancient Greek and Roman communities, but also Mesopotamian and Chinese cultures - thought they were doing through divination, and what this can tell us about the religions and cultures in which divination was practised. The chapters, authored by a range of established experts and upcoming early-career scholars, engage with four shared questions: What kinds of gods do ancient forms of divination presuppose? What beliefs, anxieties, and hopes did divination seek to address? What were the limits of human 'control' of divination? What kinds of human-divine relationships did divination create/sustain? The volume as a whole seeks to move beyond functionalist approaches to divination in order to identify and elucidate previously understudied aspects of ancient divinatory experience and practice. Special attention is paid to the experiences of non-elites, the perception of divine presence, the ways in which divinatory techniques could surprise their users by yielding unexpected or unwanted results, the difficulties of interpretation with which divinatory experts were thought to contend, and the possibility that divination could not just ease, but also exacerbate, anxiety in practitioners and consultants.

Book excerpt: It is perhaps a truism to note that ancient religion and rhetoric were closely intertwined in Greek and Roman antiquity. Religion is embedded in socio-political, legal and cultural institutions and structures, while also being influenced, or even determined, by them. Rhetoric is used to address the divine, to invoke the gods, to talk about the sacred, to express piety and to articulate, refer to, recite or explain the meaning of hymns, oaths, prayers, oracles and other religious matters and processes. The 13 contributions to this volume explore themes and topics that most succinctly describe the firm interrelation between religion and rhetoric mostly in, but not exclusively focused on, Greek and Roman antiquity, offering new, interdisciplinary insights into a great variety of aspects, from identity construction and performance to legal/political practices and a broad analytical approach to transcultural ritualistic customs. The volume also offers perceptive insights into oriental (i.e. Egyptian magic) texts and Christian literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on a simple dynamic: the taking in hand of a heritage, the variety of changes induced within it, and the handing on of that legacy to new generations. Our contributors suggest, from different standpoints, that this dynamic represented the essence of 'late antiquity'. As Roman society, and the societies by which it was immediately bounded, continued to develop, through to the late sixth and early seventh centuries, the interplay between what needed to be treasured and what needed to be explored became increasingly self-conscious, versatile, and enriched. By the time formerly alien peoples had established their 'post-classical' polities, and Islam began to stir in the East, the novelties were more clearly seen, if not always welcomed; and one witnesses a stronger will to maintain the momentum of change, of a forward reach. At the same time, those in a position to play now the role of heirs were well able to appreciate how suited to their needs the 'Roman' past might be, but how, by taking it up in their turn, they were more securely defined and yet more creatively advantaged. 'Transformation' is a notion apposite to essays in honour of Peter Brown. 'The transformation of the classical heritage' is a theme to which he has devoted, and continues to devote, much energy. All the essays here in some way explore this notion of transformation; the late antique ability to turn the past to new uses, and to set its wealth of principle and insight to work in new settings. To begin, there is the very notion of what it meant to be 'Roman', and how that notion changed. Subsequent chapters suggest ways in which fundamental characteristics of Roman society were given new form, not least under the impact of a Christian polity. Augustine, naturally, finds his place; and here the emphasis is on the unfettered stance that he took in the face of more broadly held convictions - on miracles, for example, and the errors of the pagan past. The discussion then moves on to

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of Roman Questions appeared in 1995 and was received very positively by the scholarly community. The present collection contains 71 papers written mostly in English (with one paper in German and one in Latin) and predominantly published in the last 20 years in various leading journals in Europe and America. They are all reset, and supplied with addenda. There are also 5 inedita, and addenda to the previous volume. They deal with Roman republican and imperial history and constitutional law, prosopography, epigraphy, Latin philology, Roman religion, and the history of classical scholarship. They ask questions, try to answer them, and do not avoid polemic. They uphold the unity of Altertumswissenschaft: history cannot be understood without philology, and philology is blind without history; and history, law and literature are infused with ideology and religion. And the tool to knowledge is the painstaking linguistic dissection of texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thesaurus Cultus et Rituum Antiquorum (ThesCRA) is a major multivolume reference work on all known aspects of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman cults and rituals. Providing both sweeping overview and in-depth investigation, ThesCRA covers the period from Homeric times (1000 B.C.) to late Roman times (A.D. 400). The first three volumes, published in 2005, deal with dynamic elements of cult: divination; prayer, gestures, and acts of prayer; gestures and acts of veneration; oaths; maledictions; profanation; magic; and consecration and foundation rites. The last two volumes in the set move on to static elements of cult--cult places and their depictions in antiquity in volume IV, and the personnel of cults in volume V. The major contributors to volume IV are Anneliese Kossatz-Deissmann, Francesco Marcattili, Ulrich Sinn, and Mario Torelli; those for volume V are Stella Georgoudi, Tonio Holscher, Ingrid Krauskopf, Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge, and John Scheid. The index for the five-volume set will be published in August 2006. ThesCRA was developed by the eminent group of scholars who published the eight double-volumes of LIMC (Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae)."

Book excerpt: The three books of Horace's Odes were published in 23 BC and gained him his reputation as the greatest Latin lyric poet. This book provides the Latin text (from the Oxford Classical Text series) of the third book together with a new translation by David West which attempts to be close to the Latin while catching the flavour of the original. There is also a commentary which explains the poems aimed at students of Latin literature and Roman history, whether or not they know Latin.
