This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rarely reprinted pulp magazine novel from bestselling western novelist Louis L'Amour. Showdown on the Hogback was first published in Giant Western magazine August 1950 under the pseudonym Jim Mayo. Years later, as was Louis L'Amour's habit, it was rewritten as Showdown at Yellow Butte. Was any gunfighter ever in a worse predicament? Tom Kedrick found himself caught between two sides - and he was both those sides! Hired by a big land syndicate to drive out what he is told are dangerous squatters and outlaw gangs from a useless swamp, Kedrick soon finds he has been lied to and betrayed. What he finds is fertile is ranch land already claimed by the farmers and ranchers who have been living there peacefully, but are prepared to fight to the death to keep their homes. When Kedrick confronts the syndicate, he finds himself marked for death both by the syndicate's killers and the suspicious farmers. The cover for this ebook edition is reworked from the original magazine cover by George Rozen for Showdown on the Hogback (Rosen also provided covers for The Shadow and Doc Savage magazines during his long career) and was scanned from the publisher's copy of that issue of Giant Western. Also includes a filmography of stars, directors and screenplay writers for all the theatrical films made from the author's westerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LIFE, NOT DEATH, DROVE JUBAL YOUNG . . . but memories of his ma and pa, and his beautiful, bright sister are all he has left. Memories of the peaceful days before Jubal stumbled home with his .22, his blood running cold with fear, terror, and anger. When it was over, the homestead was half burned to the ground. Someone had to bury the bodies. Someone had to set things right. Now, as Jubal rides west into New Mexico, he remembers his family’s laughter and love, his pa’s wisdom, ma’s thick books, and everything that was defiled by a band of drunken renegades towed along by one man’s murderous grudge. A reprobate lawman won’t believe his story. A soft-hearted mountain man won’t survive Jubal’s one-man war. And a judge and his beautiful daughter cannot stop Jubal from climbing a peak of blood and madness: for justice, or payback, or something he can live for—or die for—redeeming. An American film icon delivers a great American novel with Payback at Morning Peak. Gene Hackman, whose fiction is “rousing” (Publishers Weekly) and “robust” (Winston-Salem Journal), takes readers on a powerful and historically dead-on western odyssey in the tradition of Louis L’Amour.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of The Last Gunfight turns his eye for evocative detail to a sweeping novel of the American West that “will delight historical fiction fans longing for the return of classic Westerns” (Library Journal). Cash McLendon has always had an instinct for self-preservation, honed by an impoverished childhood with an alcoholic father on the streets of St. Louis. He eventually builds himself up to become the son-in-law and heir apparent to industrial mogul Rupert Douglass. But when tragedy strikes and his life falls apart, his instinct for survival kicks in and he flees St. Louis before Douglass and his enforcer can track him down. With nothing to lose, McLendon decides to search out an old flame. He’s heard through the grapevine that Gabrielle and her father moved their dry goods store out west, to a speck-on-the-map mining town named Glorious, in Arizona Territory. There, as he tries to win her back, he discovers a new life and community. But he can’t outrun his past forever...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul John Eakin's earlier work Fictions in Autobiography is a key text in autobiography studies. In it he proposed that the self that finds expression in autobiography is in fundamental ways a kind of fictive construct, a fiction articulated in a fiction. In this new book Eakin turns his attention to what he sees as the defining assumption of autobiography: that the story of the self does refer to a world of biographical and historical fact. Here he shows that people write autobiography not in some private realm of the autonomous self but rather in strenuous engagement with the pressures that life in culture entails. In so demonstrating, he offers fresh readings of autobiographies by Roland Barthes, Nathalie Sarraute, William Maxwell, Henry James, Ronald Fraser, Richard Rodriguez, Henry Adams, Patricia Hampl, John Updike, James McConkey, and Lillian Hellman. In the introduction Eakin makes a case for reopening the file on reference in autobiography, and in the first chapter he establishes the complexity of the referential aesthetic of the genre, the intricate interplay of fact and fiction in such texts. In subsequent chapters he explores some of the major contexts of reference in autobiography: the biographical, the social and cultural, the historical, and finally, underlying all the rest, the somatic and temporal dimensions of the lived experience of identity. In his discussion of contemporary theories of the self, Eakin draws especially on cultural anthropology and developmental psychology.
