Download or read book Singlewide written by Sonya Salamon and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Singlewide, Sonya Salamon and Katherine MacTavish explore the role of the trailer park as a source of affordable housing. America’s trailer parks, most in rural places, shelter an estimated 12 million people, and the authors show how these parks serve as a private solution to a pressing public need. Singlewide considers the circumstances of families with school-age children in trailer parks serving whites in Illinois, Hispanics in New Mexico, and African Americans in North Carolina. By looking carefully at the daily lives of families who live side by side in rows of manufactured homes, Salamon and MacTavish draw conclusions about the importance of housing, community, and location in the families’ dreams of opportunities and success as signified by eventually owning land and a conventional home. Working-poor rural families who engage with what Salamon and MacTavish call the "mobile home industrial complex" may become caught in an expensive trap starting with their purchase of a mobile home. A family that must site its trailer in a land-lease trailer park struggles to realize any of the anticipated benefits of homeownership. Seeking to break down stereotypes, Salamon and MacTavish reveal the important place that trailer parks hold within the United States national experience. In so doing, they attempt to integrate and normalize a way of life that many see as outside the mainstream, suggesting that families who live in trailer parks, rather than being "trailer trash," culturally resemble the parks’ neighbors who live in conventional homes.

Book excerpt: Thirty years ago, Abel Truman found himself on the wrong side in the Battle of the Wilderness, one of the bloodiest clashes of the American Civil War. Its aftermath took him to the edge of the continent, the rugged coast of Washington State, where he has made his home in a driftwood shack with his beloved dog, waiting for the scars of war to heal. Now an old and ailing man, Abel must make one heroic final journey over the snowbound Olympic Mountains. It's a quest he has little hope of completing but must still undertake to settle matters of the heart that predate even the horrors of the war. But as Abel sets out, violence follows him in the shape of the memories of those he has lost, and the savagery he took part in and witnessed, as well as two men who are darkly tenacious in their pursuit.Hypatia is a slave whose freedom comes at a terrible price, and who finds herself walking unwittingly into the hellish heart of the Wilderness. Ellen is a white woman, married to a black man at a time that is as dangerous as it is unforgiving. And Jane is a young Chinese girl, who is newly, cruelly orphaned, and clinging on to life. Abel's tortured and ultimately redemptive path leads him to each of them as he encounters compassion amid brutality and tenderness within loss.
Book Synopsis Lee's Trailer Park by : "J.H." James
Download or read book Lee's Trailer Park written by "J.H." James and published by J.H. James. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lee's Trailer Park" is a captivating account of my early years as a child, raised by a single mother in an impoverished environment, at a time when a combination of those characteristics was generally frowned upon by society. While it is a true-life story of the many obstacles that confronted me throughout my childhood and adolescent years ... it reads like a novel. "Lee's Trailer Park" is a testimony to Napoleon Hill's famous quote, "Out of every adversity springs a seed of an equivalent or greater benefit." As long as we never quit; as long as we get up one more time than we are knocked down; as long as we are willing to overcome any and all obstacles that stand in our way, then we can achieve whatever goals and objectives that we set for ourselves in our lives.

Book Synopsis Trailer Park America by : Leontina Hormel
Download or read book Trailer Park America written by Leontina Hormel and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In rural northern Idaho in the winter of 2013-2014, Syringa Mobile Home Park’s water system was contaminated by sewage, resulting in residents’ water being shut off for 93 days. By summer 2018 Syringa had closed, forcing residents to relocate or face homelessness. Trailer Park America chronicles how residents dealt with regulatory agencies, frequent boil order notices, threats of closure, and class-based social stigma over this period. Despite all this, what was seen as a dysfunctional, ‘disorderly’ community by outsiders was instead a refuge where veterans, women heads of households, and people with disabilities or substance use disorders were supported and understood. The embattled Syringa community also organized to defend the rights and dignity of residents and served as a site for negotiating with local government, culminating in a class-action lawsuit that reached the federal level. The experiences Syringa residents faced in this conservative, predominately white region of the United States are emblematic of the growing national and global crisis in affordable housing and home ownership, with declining work conditions and incomes for the working-class.
