"The book is a collection of true stories of people who were taken captive by Native American tribes during the colonial period of America. The stories are based on the accounts of the captives themselves, as well as those of their friends and family members. The book provides a detailed and vivid description of the experiences of the captives, including their capture, life in the wigwam, and eventual release or escape. The book also includes information about the customs and traditions of the various Native American tribes, as well as their interactions with the European colonizers. The book is an important historical document that sheds light on the complex and often violent relationship between Native Americans and Europeans during the early years of American history."--Amazon.com.

Excerpt: ... officers' dress, with sash, half moon, laced hats, &c., which the British then wore. A few days after this the Indians demanded me, and I was obliged to go with them. I was not yet well able to march, but they took me in a janoe up the Alleghany river to an Indian town, that was on the north side of the river, about forty miles above fort Du Quesne. Here I remained about three weeks, and was then taken to an Indian town on the west branch of Muskingum, about twenty miles above the forks, which was called Tullihas, inhabited by Delawares, Caughne-wagas, and Mohicans. On our route betwixt the aforesaid towns the country was chiefly black oak and white oak land, which appeared generally to be good wheat land, chiefly second and third rate, intermixed with some rich bottoms. The day after my arrival at the aforesaid town, a number of Indians collected about me, and one of them began to pull the hair out of my head. He had some ashes on a piece of bark, in which he frequently dipped his fingers, in order to take the firmer hold, and so he went on, as if he had been plucking a turkey, until he had all the hair clean out of my head, except a small spot about three or four inches square on my crown; this they cut off with a pair of scissors, excepting three locks, which they dressed up in their own mode. Two of these they wrapped round with a narrow beaded garter made by themselves for that purpose, and the other they plaited at full length, and then stuck it full of silver brooches. After this they bored my nose and ears, and fixed me off with earrings and nose jewels; then they ordered me to strip off my clothes and put on a breech-clout, which I did; they then painted my head, face, and body, in various colors. They put a large belt of wampum...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the early white settlers, accounts of Indian captivities and massacres became America's first literature of catharsis - a means by which a population that disapproved of fiction and play-acting could satisfy its appetite for stories about other people's misfortunes. This collection of unaltered captivity narratives, first published in 1973, remains an invaluable source of information for historians and ethnologists, providing a fascinating glimpse of a vanished era. For this edition, VanDerBeets has written a new preface discussing the proliferation of recent scholarship about captivity narratives, especially those written by women.
