The twentieth century Catholic theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar addressed these questions using tragic drama. Balthasar demonstrated how ancient, pre-Christian tragedy and Renaissance works contained important Christian concepts, but he critiqued modern novels as failing to be either truly tragic or Christian.
