Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research report documents the development models for control of signalized diamond interchanges during oversaturated traffic conditions. Oversaturated traffic conditions occur when the average traffic demand exceeds the capacity of the signal system. The dynamic optimization model proposed is the principal product of this research. The control objective of the dynamic model is to provide maximum system productivity as well as minimum delay for a selected roadway system. A special feature predetermined upper limits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report serves as a comprehensive guide to traffic signal timing and documents the tasks completed in association with its development. The focus of this document is on traffic signal control principles, practices, and procedures. It describes the relationship between traffic signal timing and transportation policy and addresses maintenance and operations of traffic signals. It represents a synthesis of traffic signal timing concepts and their application and focuses on the use of detection, related timing parameters, and resulting effects to users at the intersection. It discusses advanced topics briefly to raise awareness related to their use and application. The purpose of the Signal Timing Manual is to provide direction and guidance to managers, supervisors, and practitioners based on sound practice to proactively and comprehensively improve signal timing. The outcome of properly training staff and proactively operating and maintaining traffic signals is signal timing that reduces congestion and fuel consumption ultimately improving our quality of life and the air we breathe. This manual provides an easy-to-use concise, practical and modular guide on signal timing. The elements of signal timing from policy and funding considerations to timing plan development, assessment, and maintenance are covered in the manual. The manual is the culmination of research into practices across North America and serves as a reference for a range of practitioners, from those involved in the day to day management, operation and maintenance of traffic signals to those that plan, design, operate and maintain these systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A traffic simulation model was developed to provide a methodology for traffic signal timing in oversaturated urban arterial networks. Two control objectives of traffic signal timing in oversaturated conditions were taken into consideration. One was to maximize the number of vehicles processed in an arterial network, which has an oversaturated traffic demand at the entry of the arterial street and moderate traffic demands at the entry of cross streets. The other was to prevent queue spillback or to minimize the occurrence of queue spillback if inevitable. Signal timing offset was the dominant factor affecting system performance; although, link length was also important. When link length is short, the optimum offset is approximately zero, regardless of the cycle length. As link length increases beyond the minimum 200 ft (61 m) tested, for highest efficiency, downstream intersection greens should begin before upstream intersection greens. This relationship, opposite to conventional progression greens, moves downstream queues before incoming platoon arrival. Cross street traffic operations can have significant effects upon arterial performance and system efficiency. System efficiency rapidly deteriorates when any cross street green becomes too short for the link length. Therefore, a "practical" minimum green interval for cross streets is necessary to accommodate upstream cross street through traffic and turning vehicles from the arterial. When the cross street green is shorter than the minimum, even with the best offset combination, queue spillbacks occur on the cross streets and system efficiency deteriorates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freeway ramp metering systems have been used to improve urban freeway flow. However, control strategies must be properly adjusted to account for ramp queues overflowing onto surface streets and provide equitable on-ramp control during various operating periods. An improved solution can be obtained by optimizing this problem simultaneously for a group of time slices. This study identifies and examines a microcomputer-based optimization scheme that can assist in developing efficient freeway control strategies for on-line freeway surveillance and control. A multi-level freeway control structure is employed for which ramp metering control algorithms are developed for each level of control. Flow-based and lane occupancy-based system algorithms are presented. Detailed data file requirements are provided for each control level. A microcomputer prototype, or laboratory test version of the system level, will be described in a companion project report.
