Book Synopsis Terminologie de la Traduction by : Jean Delisle
Download or read book Terminologie de la Traduction written by Jean Delisle and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1999-07-15 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This terminology collection presents approximately 200 concepts that can be considered the basic vocabulary for the practical teaching of translation. Four languages are included: French, English, Spanish and German. Nearly twenty translation teachers and terminologists from universities in eight countries (Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and Venezuela) defined the concepts and presented them in pedagogical form, with notes and examples. The terms describe specific language acts, the cognitive aspects involved in the translation process, the procedures involved in transfer from one language to another, and the results of these operations. All of the terms in each section of the book are cross-referenced. A dozen tables help the reader understand the relationships between the concepts, and a bibliography completes each section. This vocabulary is designed to be a useful tool and contribution to the general quality of translator training.

Book Synopsis The Metalanguage of Translation by : Yves Gambier
Download or read book The Metalanguage of Translation written by Yves Gambier and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let the meta-discussion begin, James Holmes urged in 1972. Coming almost forty years later years filled with fascinating and often unexpected developments in the interdiscipline of Translation Studies this volume offers the reader a multiplicity of meta-perspectives, while also moving the discussion forward. Indeed, the (re)production and (re)use of metalinguistic metaphors frame and partly determine our views on research, so such a discussion is vital -as it is in any scholarly discipline. Among other questions, the eleven contributors draw the reader s attention to the often puzzling variations of usage and conceptualization in both the theory and the practice of translation. First published as a special issue of Target 19:2 (2007), the volume runs the gamut of metalinguistic topics, ranging from terminology, localization and epistemological questions, through the Chinese perspective, to the conceptual mapping of the online Translation Studies Bibliography."
Book Synopsis A World Atlas of Translation by : Yves Gambier
Download or read book A World Atlas of Translation written by Yves Gambier and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do people think of translation in the different historical, cultural and linguistic traditions of the world? How many uses has translation been put to? How distant from one another are the concepts of translation found in the different traditions? These are some of the questions A World Atlas of Translation addresses. Its twenty-one reports give us pictures taken from the inside, both from traditions that are well represented in the literature and from the many that (for now) are not. But the Atlas is not content with documenting – no map is this innocent. In fact, the wealth of information collected and made accessible by its reporters can be useful to gauge the dispersion of translation concepts across traditions. As you read its reports, the Atlas will keep asking “How far apart do these concepts look to you?” Finally and more ambitiously, the reports can help us test the hypothesis that a cross-cultural notion of translation exists. In this respect, the Atlas is mostly a proof of concept. It hopes to encourage further fact-based research in quest of a robust and compelling unifying notion of translation.
Book Synopsis Unterwegs zu einer hermeneutischen Übersetzungswissenschaft by : Larisa Cercel
Download or read book Unterwegs zu einer hermeneutischen Übersetzungswissenschaft written by Larisa Cercel and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2012-03-07 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Dialogue Interpreting by : Ian Mason
Download or read book Dialogue Interpreting written by Ian Mason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialogue interpreting includes what is variously referred to in English as Community, Public Service, Liaison, Ad Hoc or Bilateral Interpreting - the defining characteristic being interpreter-mediated communication in spontaneous face-to-face interaction. Included under this heading are all kinds of professional encounters: police, immigration and welfare services interviews, doctor-patient interviews, business negotiations, political interviews, lawyer-client and courtroom interpreting and so on. Whereas research into conference interpreting is now well established, the investigation of dialogue interpreting as a professional activity is still in its infancy, despite some highly promising publications in recent years. This special issue of The Translator, guest-edited by one of the leading scholars in translation studies, provides a forum for bringing together separate strands within this developing field and should create an impetus for further research. Viewing the interpreter as a gatekeeper, coordinator and negotiator of meanings within a three-way interaction, the descriptive studies included in this volume focus on issues such as role-conflict, in-group loyalties, participation status, relevance and the negotiation of face, thus linking the observation of interpreting practice to pragmatic constraints such as power, distance and face-threat and to semiotic constraints such as genres and discourses as socio-textual practices of particular cultural communities.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Terminology by : Abied Alsulaiman
Download or read book Handbook of Terminology written by Abied Alsulaiman and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current volume represents a revival of Arabic translation and terminology studies. These disciplines have been dominated by Western scholarship in recent decades, but in truth their historical tradition as a whole owes a great debt to Arabic scholarship. The first systematic translation activity ever organized was under the Abbasids in Baghdad in the 9th Century CE, and Arabic domination continued for several centuries before the tide turned. In this collection, the importance of the ongoing translation and terminology movement in the Arab world is revealed through the works of some of the most distinguished scholars, who investigate a wide range of relevant topics from the making of the first ever Arabic monolingual dictionary to modern-day localization into Arabic. Arabic terminology standardization as well as legal, medical, Sufi and Quranic terms — issues with both cultural and economic ramifications for the Arab world — are thoroughly examined, completing the solid framework of this rich tradition that still has a lot to offer.
Book Synopsis Going East: Discovering New and Alternative Traditions in Translation Studies by : Larisa Schippel
Download or read book Going East: Discovering New and Alternative Traditions in Translation Studies written by Larisa Schippel and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive overview of various Eastern European traditions of thought on the subject of translation as well as the discipline of Translation Studies. It sheds a light on how these traditions developed, how they are related to and how they differ from Western traditions. The volume shows nationally-framed histories of translation and Translation Studies and presents Eastern European pioneers and trailblazing thinkers in the discipline. This collection of articles, however, also shows that it is at times hard or even impossible to draw the line between theoretical and/or scientific thinking and pre-theoretical and/or pre-scientific thinking on translation. Furthermore, it shows that our discipline’s beginnings, which are supposedly rooted in Western scholarship, may have to be rethought and, consequently, rewritten.
