Book Synopsis The Bible's First History by : Robert B. Coote
Download or read book The Bible's First History written by Robert B. Coote and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about an ancient writer, the J writer—the Yahwist—who produced a work of political imagination. This work is embedded mainly in the first four books of the Bible, best known for some of the most popular and influential biblical stories in Genesis and Exodus. The purpose of the book is to represent the whole of the original story with attention to its own meaning, without the influence of the other literary strands with which it was later supplemented. Therefore the work includes a fresh, complete translation of the text of the J writer, who produced the Bible’s first history. The translation itself helps to establish more clearly than ever the integrity of the J writer. The concern here is WHEN and WHY this history was written, especially in light of the concerns for justice and prosperity. Throughout it is demonstrated HOW and WHY this history comes from the court of David; it is a royal history of David’s subjects as though they were descended from pastoral nomads such as Abram, Isaac, and Jacob. It is argued that the intended audience of the history was probably those bedouin who regularly visited the court of David in Hebron and Jerusalem. Here is a bold and brilliant representation of the J writer’s composition, perhaps as it was originally intended to be read or heard. This ancient tour de force takes on new life in the hands of these skilled interpreters.

Book excerpt: Lost? No one to give you directions? Don't know which way to go? When you stand lost at the crossroads, you look for someone to come along to show you how to get out of your predicament. Sometimes you receive the answer you have been waiting for and sometimes it seems like you don’t. When you look for the correct pathway, you have to look to the person who can supply the answers. Jesus said to his followers, “I am the Way—yes, and the Truth, and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through me.†Jesus came to show us the way which meant that he had to equip us with a lesson plan and instructions on how to live in the world and get a handle on our circumstances, yet not be a part of it; he showed us how to have the peace of the Lord and enjoy all the world has to offer without compromising our ideals. Jesus is the captain and the head, steering Eve’s children to follow the correct course back to their first home, the Garden of Eden.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although scholars have for centuries primarily been interested in using the study of ancient Israel to explain, illuminate, and clarify the biblical story, Megan Bishop Moore and Brad E. Kelle describe how scholars today seek more and more to tell the story of the past on its own terms, drawing from both biblical and extrabiblical sources to illuminate ancient Israel and its neighbors without privileging the biblical perspective. Biblical History and Israel s Past provides a comprehensive survey of how study of the Old Testament and the history of Israel has changed since the middle of the twentieth century. Moore and Kelle discuss significant trends in scholarship, trace the development of ideas since the 1970s, and summarize major scholars, viewpoints, issues, and developments.
