Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A curious figure stalks the pages of a distinct subset of mass-market romance novels, aptly called “desert romances.” Animalistic yet sensitive, dark and attractive, the desert prince or sheikh emanates manliness and raw, sexual power. In the years since September 11, 2001, the sheikh character has steadily risen in popularity in romance novels, even while depictions of Arab masculinity as backward and violent in nature have dominated the cultural landscape. An Imperialist Love Story contributes to the broader conversation about the legacy of orientalist representations of Arabs in Western popular culture. Combining close readings of novels, discursive analysis of blogs and forums, and interviews with authors, Jarmakani explores popular investments in the war on terror by examining the collisions between fantasy and reality in desert romances. Focusing on issues of security, freedom, and liberal multiculturalism, she foregrounds the role that desire plays in contemporary formations of U.S. imperialism. Drawing on transnational feminist theory and cultural studies, An Imperialist Love Story offers a radical reinterpretation of the war on terror, demonstrating romance to be a powerful framework for understanding how it works, and how it perseveres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What the hell was that?" She demanded fiercely, striding across the room in pursuit. Her negligee was torn, and hung loose about her stomach. She pulled it off impatiently, uncaring that she was totally naked. He turned, slowly, his back ramrod straight. He seemed to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. "Sex, Miranda. That was sex." He sounded bored. As though he were explaining a simple concept to a child. "You can't just.... I mean... I haven't seen you in days. I haven't heard from you. And you just... walk in here... and expect me to... for us to..." He crossed his arms over his chest, refusing to let her confusion wear him down. The more tenderness he felt for this woman, the harder he had to be with her. For she was not someone he could ever become involved with, other than sexually, and he would not give her the wrong impression. "Of course I can, Miranda. This was our deal, remember?" Miranda travels to the conservative Kingdom of Fasiya with a simple enough goal in mind. Her best friend Mastepha is in trouble and needs money - money she has spades of in her Fasiyan apartment. Unfortunately, Mastepha happens to be the sister of the all powerful Sheikh Radiz Zamin, and he doesn't look kindly on the attempted theft. Miranda can't reveal the truth about the reason she's come to Fasiya in place of her friend - if Radiz discovers his sister is pregnant to some British barman, he'll be furious! Radiz suspects the beautiful thief has something to do with Mastepha - they're a similar age and herald from the same city, after all. He hopes she might even be able to tell him something about the sister who has increasingly become a stranger to him. Unfortunately, Miranda is intractable, and refuses to reveal anything about her motivations - and she certainly won't acknowledge any connection to the wayward royal. Despite her denials, a sixth sense convinces Radiz that she knows far more than she's letting on. Faced with the option of leaving her to rot in a Fasiyan prison for the rest of her life, or attempting to elicit the truth from Miranda using whatever interrogation techniques are at his disposal, Radiz opts for the latter. A complicated web of seduction, desire, and secrecy unfolds around them. Only it can't last. Miranda has lied to Radiz in a way he'll never be able to forgive, and the only option she has left is to flee his Kingdom and try, with all her heart, to forget the way he makes her feel in his arms.

Download or read book Hot Commodities written by Jim Rogers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The next bull market is here. It’s not in stocks. It’s not in bonds. It’s in commodities - and some smart investors will be riding that bull to record returns in the next decade. Before Jim Rogers hit the road to write his best-selling books Investment Biker and Adventure Capitalist, he was one of the world’s most successful investors. He co-founded the Quantum Fund and made so much money that he never needed to work again. Yet despite his success, Rogers has never written a book of practical investment advice - until now. In Hot Commodities, Rogers offers the low-down on the most lucrative markets for today and tomorrow. In late 1998, gliding under the radar, a bull market in commodities began. Rogers thinks it’s going to continue for at least fifteen years - and he’s put his money where his mouth is: In 1998, he started his own commodities index fund. It’s up 165% since then, with more than $200 million invested, and it’s the single-best performing index fund in the world in any asset class. Less risky than stocks and less sluggish than bonds, commodities are where the money is - and will be in the years ahead. Rogers’s strategies are simple and straightforward. You can start small - a few thousand dollars will suffice. It’s all about putting your money into stuff you understand, the basic materials of everyday life, like copper, sugar, cotton, corn, or crude oil. Once you recognize the cyclical and historical trading patterns outlined here, you’ll be on your way. In language that is both colourful and accessible, Rogers explains why the world of commodity investing can be one of the simplest of all - and how commodities are the bases by which investors can value companies, markets, and whole economies. To be a truly great investor is to know something about commodities. For small investors and high rollers alike, Hot Commodities is as good as gold . . . or lead, or aluminium, which are some of the commodities Rogers says could be as rewarding for investors.

Book Synopsis The Antiquities Trade in Egypt 1880-1930 by : Fredrik Hagen
Download or read book The Antiquities Trade in Egypt 1880-1930 written by Fredrik Hagen and published by Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. This book was released on 2016 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast collections of Egyptian objects on display in Western museums attract millions of visitors every year, and they reinforce a cultural fascination for this ancient civilisation that has been a feature of European intellectual history since Roman times. This book tells the story of how these objects came to be here. The book presents the first in-depth analysis of this market during its golden age in Egypt in the late 19th and early 20th Century. It is primarily based on the archival material of the Danish Egyptologist H. O. Lange (1863-1943) who, during two prolonged stays in Egypt (1899/1900 and 1929/1930), bought objects on behalf of Danish museums. The travel diaries, and the accompanying photographs, are complemented by a wide range of other sources, including contemporary travel guides and various travel memoirs, which together paint an extraordinarily detailed picture of the extensive antiquities trade. The book looks at the laws governing trade and export, both in theory and practice, and the changes over time. The practicalities of the trade are described: its seasons, the networks of supply, the various methods available for acquiring antiquities, and the subsequent routes of transmission of objects, as well as the different types of dealers operating in Egypt. The geographical distribution of dealers is mapped, and the role of the Egyptian state as a dealer is investigated, both through official sale rooms, and as a seller and exporter of more or less complete tomb-chapels. The final part of the book contains a list, with short biographies, of over 250 dealers active in Egypt from the 1880s until the abolishment of the trade in 1983. Most of them are described here in detail for the first time. The book will be of interest to archaeologists, Egyptologists, papyrologists, museum curators, and historians of science, and is a useful starting point for anyone wishing to understand how the great Western collections of Egyptian antiquities were formed.

Download or read book Nights of Plague written by Orhan Pamuk and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature: Part detective story, part historical epic—a bold and brilliant novel that imagines a plague ravaging a fictional island in the Ottoman Empire. It is April 1900, in the Levant, on the imaginary island of Mingheria—the twenty-ninth state of the Ottoman Empire—located in the eastern Mediterranean between Crete and Cyprus. Half the population is Muslim, the other half are Orthodox Greeks, and tension is high between the two. When a plague arrives—brought either by Muslim pilgrims returning from the Mecca or by merchant vessels coming from Alexandria—the island revolts. To stop the epidemic, the Ottoman sultan Abdul Hamid II sends his most accomplished quarantine expert to the island—an Orthodox Christian. Some of the Muslims, including followers of a popular religious sect and its leader Sheikh Hamdullah, refuse to take precautions or respect the quarantine. And then a murder occurs. As the plague continues its rapid spread, the Sultan sends a second doctor to the island, this time a Muslim, and strict quarantine measures are declared. But the incompetence of the island’s governor and local administration and the people’s refusal to respect the bans doom the quarantine to failure, and the death count continues to rise. Faced with the danger that the plague might spread to the West and to Istanbul, the Sultan bows to international pressure and allows foreign and Ottoman warships to blockade the island. Now the people of Mingheria are on their own, and they must find a way to defeat the plague themselves. Steeped in history and rife with suspense, Nights of Plague is an epic story set more than one hundred years ago, with themes that feel remarkably contemporary.
