After eighteen years of single life, Diane marries Pat Sheridan and acquires five grown stepchildren. Diane's daughter, Tracey, graduates from the University of Maryland and moves to the place of her dreams - California. She begins a career in the entertainment industry, working at ABC, Viacom, and Paramount. In 2005, Tracey learns that she has lung cancer. Angry and afraid, she undergoes surgery and chemotherapy. Her mother cares for her through her cancer treatments on the West Coast. In 2007, Tracey falls in love with Brandon De Libro, and they put their relationship on a fast track, marry, and have a beautiful baby, Bella, all in the last year of Tracey's life. During her pregnancy, Tracey's health deteriorates and she reluctantly agrees to have brain irradiation. Brandon, Bella, Tracey, and Diane spend the rest of Tracey's days at their Huntington Beach house. We hear in Tracey's own words how she feels about dying and leaving baby Bella. Book excerpt: “We are not worth more, they are not worth less.” This is the mantra of S. Brian Willson and the theme that runs throughout his compelling psycho-historical memoir. Willson’s story begins in small-town, rural America, where he grew up as a “Commie-hating, baseball-loving Baptist,” moves through life-changing experiences in Viet Nam, Nicaragua and elsewhere, and culminates with his commitment to a localized, sustainable lifestyle. In telling his story, Willson provides numerous examples of the types of personal, risk-taking, nonviolent actions he and others have taken in attempts to educate and effect political change: tax refusal—which requires simplification of one’s lifestyle; fasting—done publicly in strategic political and/or therapeutic spiritual contexts; and obstruction tactics—strategically placing one’s body in the way of “business as usual.” It was such actions that thrust Brian Willson into the public eye in the mid-’80s, first as a participant in a high-profile, water-only “Veterans Fast for Life” against the Contra war being waged by his government in Nicaragua. Then, on a fateful day in September 1987, the world watched in horror as Willson was run over by a U.S. government munitions train during a nonviolent blocking action in which he expected to be removed from the tracks and arrested. Losing his legs only strengthened Willson’s identity with millions of unnamed victims of U.S. policy around the world. He provides details of his travels to countries in Latin America and the Middle East and bears witness to the harm done to poor people as well as to the environment by the steamroller of U.S. imperialism. These heart-rending accounts are offered side by side with inspirational stories of nonviolent struggle and the survival of resilient communities Willson’s expanding consciousness also uncovers injustices within his own country, including insights gained through his study and service within the U.S. criminal justice system and personal experiences addressing racial injustices. He discusses coming to terms with his identity as a Viet Nam veteran and the subsequent service he provides to others as director of a veterans outreach center in New England. He draws much inspiration from friends he encounters along the way as he finds himself continually drawn to the path leading to a simpler life that seeks to “do no harm.&rdquo Throughout his personal journey Willson struggles with the question, “Why was it so easy for me, a ’good’ man, to follow orders to travel 9,000 miles from home to participate in killing people who clearly were not a threat to me or any of my fellow citizens?” He eventually comes to the realization that the “American Way of Life” is AWOL from humanity, and that the only way to recover our humanity is by changing our consciousness, one individual at a time, while striving for collective cultural changes toward “less and local.” Thus, Willson offers up his personal story as a metaphorical map for anyone who feels the need to be liberated from the American Way of Life—a guidebook for anyone called by conscience to question continued obedience to vertical power structures while longing to reconnect with the human archetypes of cooperation, equity, mutual respect and empathy.

Book excerpt: A city on the brink of disaster. A slave girl with a deadly secret. Disguised as a young man, Ariella escapes life as a Jewish slave in Rome, only to be sold into a traveling gladiator troupe. Waiting for her moment to gain fame and then freedom, she keeps her identity secret. But when she arrives to fight in Pompeii, a Roman politician-turned-winemaker shows too much curiosity, and Ariella must harden her heart against Cato's interest. And then there's Jeremiah, the aged barracks slave who whispers of a new sect of Jews called Christians, who offer a different way of life. All the while, Vesuvius looms over the city, churning with deadly intent. It's getting harder to protect her heart. Corrupt politics and religious persecution throw Cato and Ariella together, but time is running out. Pompeii will soon be lost to the world under an onslaught of fiery ash. Can the two bridge their differences, to save the lives of those they love?

And even though you can always use apps in your phone or tablet to track the details of your travel, there's still something infinitely satisfying about the act of taking out your pen and jotting down memorable quotes you heard from chatty locals, keywords that struck you in a moment of inspiration while sipping a cup of espresso, or a new foreign phrase you've just picked up. But in the frenzy of planning your itinerary, to last-minute packing, to hopping from one connecting flight to another, it can be hard to remember to write down those seemingly insignificant details. Thankfully, you've got this travel journal to help you. With 108 pages of insightful, thoughtful journalling prompts encased in an elegant glossy soft cover, this is more than just a trip diary; it's the first hand witness to every inch of your wanderlust fulfilled. Book excerpt: During his lifetime, Spencer Tracy was known as Hollywood's 'actor's actor'. Critics wrote that what Olivier was to theatre, Tracy was to film. Over his career he was nominated for nine Academy Awards, and won two. But there has been no substantial, intimate biography of the man, until now. From his earliest days in stock theatre, Tracy was a publicist's trial, guarding his private life fiercely. Most of the people associated closely with him shunned the limelight - notably his wife, his children and the great actress Katharine Hepburn, with whom he had an affair that lasted over 26 years. Although his screen roles often depicted a happy, twinkling Irishman, Tracy struggled with alchoholism to the end, a fact which the studios managed to keep out of the papers. With the help of Tracy's daughter, Susie, and access to previously unseen papers, James Curtis has now produced the definitive biography of a tortured, complex and immensely talented man.The book contains 124 integrated photos, many published for the first time.
