Book excerpt: Heavy metals, such as copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), are considered hazardous in natural waters due to their toxicity and non-biodegradability. The focus of this study is to use batch experiments to investigate the heavy metal (Cu and Zn) removal efficiency of perlite and EarthliteTM to improve in-situ filtration systems for stormwater catchment basins. Stormwater samples from two field sites in Portland, OR, chosen to represent a high-use commercial site and high-traffic urban road, were characterized to inform experimental design and compare to values found in literature. The Linear, Freundlich, and Langmuir isotherm models were used to describe equilibrium data and determine partitioning coefficients for single metal batch studies. Both the Freundlich and Langmuir models fit most single metal batch systems, while Cu-Perlite, Zn-Perlite, and Zn-EarthliteTM, were best fit by the Langmuir model, R2 = 0.9594; 0.9538; 0.9811, respectively. Competitive adsorption behaviors for Cu and Zn were evaluated using a synthetic stormwater recipe where relative concentrations of Cu and Zn were maintained to be consistent with representative stormwater samples. Perlite showed a decrease in the sorption capacity of Cu and Zn in the presence of competing ions in solution. EarthliteTM showed no difference in the affinity for copper uptake between competitive and non-competitive batch experiments. EarthliteTM affinity for Zn decreased by two orders of magnitude in the competitive batch system. The results from this study will be applied to estimate filter lifetime for traditional and advanced stormwater filter systems. These results will inform experimental design in dynamic flow-through experiments using various filter media thereby improving filter design and implementation of stormwater best management practices.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the physicochemical changes (transformations) that metals deposited on urban road surfaces undergo during dry weather periods, in order to provide insights into their potential impacts on stormwater quality. Based on extensive field experiments, and laboratory and data analyses, it examines transformation characteristics of metals with respect to the particle size of road dust, antecedent dry days and land uses. Further, it proposes a new risk-assessment methodology, improving the original human health-risk indices based on the transformation characteristics and potential bioavailability of metals in order to evaluate the risks posed by metals in stormwater. This book is of interest to researchers and decision-makers developing appropriate pollution mitigation measures to enhance the quality of stormwater, targeting the effective reuse of stormwater in urban areas.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy metal contamination of the aquatic environment is a concerning issue for environmental mangers in New Zealand and overseas. Stormwater running off impervious surfaces reflecting an array of different land use activities is a large contributor of heavy metals to rivers, estuaries and coastal environments. To better manage for the effects of heavy metals in the environment, an understanding of their provenance and pathway is important . Additional factors varying such losses include land use activities, duration of antecedent dry days before runoff occurs, first flush phenomena and the amount of sediment washed off during rain events. This thesis characterises the nature of stormwater contaminant runoff from industrial land use within New Zealand’s largest urban centre, Auckland. To date, limited research has addressed stormwater contamination from industrial areas. From the analysis of heavy metal content in stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces, time-series of contaminants were invested to determine the effects of antecedent dry periods on heavy metal generation. Differences in heavy metal contributions during different segments of the hydrological flow are also investigated. Two sub-catchments in Auckland of predominant heavy industrial land-use within the Whau River catchment are examined. Flow–weighted sampling was undertaken during a number of rain events, associated with varying length of antecedent dry period and varying rainfall volume, to better characterise variation in stormwater quality from industrial areas of Auckland. The flow-weighted samples were assigned into two different segments: the first flush event; and the remaining bulk segment. Event mean concentrations were calculated for total and dissolved copper, zinc, lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, nickel and total suspended solids (TSS), across both first flush and bulk segments. Results showed that stormwater quality for industrial land use varied, albeit total suspended solids, copper, zinc and lead were consistently elevated above ANZECC thresholds for the protection of aquatic biota from toxicity and/or wider sedimentary effects. Correlations were found between total suspended solids and total event mean concentrations of total copper, total lead, dissolved lead, total chromium, dissolved zinc and total nickel. Correlations were also found between antecedent dry periods and total event mean concentrations of dissolved zinc and total nickel at only one of the two main study sites.

Book excerpt: This book provides researchers and graduate students with an overview of the latest developments in and applications of adsorption processes for water treatment and purification. In particular, it covers current topics in connection with the modeling and design of adsorption processes, and the synthesis and application of cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of relevant aquatic pollutants. The book describes recent advances and alternatives to improve the performance and efficacy of this water purification technique. In addition, selected chapters are devoted to discussing the reliable modeling and analysis of adsorption data, which are relevant for real-life applications to industrial effluents and groundwater. Overall, the book equips readers with a general perspective of the potential that adsorption processes hold for the removal of emerging water pollutants. It can readily be adopted as part of special courses on environmental engineering, adsorption and water treatment for upper undergraduate and graduate students. Furthermore, the book offers a valuable resource for researchers in water production control, as well as for practitioners interested in applying adsorption processes to real-world problems in water treatment and related areas.
