Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace Elements in Human and Animal Nutrition focuses on trace elements and their nutritional significance to humans and domestic animals. The trace elements covered include copper, molybdenum, iron, cobalt, nickel, zinc, manganese, iodine, fluorine, selenium, aluminum, arsenic, barium, strontium, boron, bromine, silicon, and vanadium. This book is organized into 13 chapters and begins with an overview of the trace element concept, the mode of action of trace elements, and the use of spectrochemical methods for the detection and estimation of t ace metals in biological materials. The next chapters explore in more detail the importance of trace elements in human and animal nutrition, touching on topics such as absorption and excretion in the body, deficiency, and toxicity. The book concludes by discussing the interrelationships between plants, man and his domestic animals, and the soil, with emphasis on the link between trace element deficiencies and health. An account of factors influencing the trace element contents of plants is also given. Finally, qualitative and quantitative differences in the trace element requirements of plants and animals are described. This book is intended for nutritionists and those who plan to specialize in nutrition.

Book excerpt: The Second Meeting of the International Society for Trace Element Research in Humans (ISTERH) was held in Tokyo from August 28 through September 1,1989. On August 27, the day preceding the opening of the meeting, a typhoon made a direct attack on Tokyo, welcoming guests from all over the world in a rather violent way. To our great relief, the weather during the week of the meeting turned out to be exceptionally agreeable for that time of year in Tokyo. We were also pleased to see the entire scheduled course of the meeting, including the social activities, carried out smoothly and the contents of the program favorably appraised. The meeting was attended by 518 scientists from 30 countries. Recent unrest following steps toward democratization in the Communist bloc gave rise to some apprehension; therefore, we were particularly pleased to see attendants from China, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union. No one could possibly have predicted the drastic change in Eastern Europe that followed, but again, we were relieved to learn (by a subsequent letter) of the safety of an attendant from Rumania, who had been our greatest concern. A total of 384 papers were contributed to the meeting. The abstracts for all have been published in the Journal of Trace Elements in Experimental Medicine, vol 2, No. 2/3 (1989). This proceedings carries 64 subjects introduced in the Special Session.

Book excerpt: The first book to compile the clinical signs associated with deficiencies, toxicities, imbalances, or exposures to minerals, trace elements, and rare earth elements in humans and animal species, Clinical Signs in Humans and Animals Associated With Minerals, Trace Elements, and Rare Earth Elements aims to increase awareness to improve diagnosis and to encourage further investigation based on comparative data. Written by an experienced veterinary clinician having worked in private practice, academia, and pharmaceutical and pet food industries, this book includes data on humans and primates, as well as companion animals, horses, rabbits, reptiles, ruminants, poultry, fish, and species typical in zoo populations. The subject material is divided into three sections to provide easy access to information on clinical signs, specific elements, or species. This book is written for medical and veterinary researchers, clinicians, and practitioners, specifically those working with animal nutrition and animal feed health. Academics and public health scientists will also benefit from the book's information and data on rehabilitating and maintaining animal health. - Includes data for a wide range of animal specimens, such as mammal and poultry species - Provides concise and accessible summary tables of clinical signs and the species in which they are seen - Offers relevant references and other useful information, such as management strategies

Book excerpt: The major change in the format of the fifth edition is the presentation of the book in two volumes, necessitated by the rapidly increasing knowledge of metabolism, interactions, and requirements of trace elements. The guiding principle was to present the minimum of results that would serve as a logical foundation for the description of the present state of knowledge.

Book excerpt: Nutrient Requirements of Domesticated Ruminants draws on the most up-to-date research on the energy, protein, mineral, vitamin and water requirements of beef and dairy cattle, sheep and goats. It defines the responses of animals, in weight change, milk production and wool growth, to quantitative and qualitative changes in their feed supply. It has particular application to grazing animals. Factors affecting the intake of feed are taken into account and recommendations are given according to the production systems being used; for instance, the feed intake of a grazing animal is affected by a larger number of variables than a housed animal. Examples of the estimation of the energy and nutrients required for the different production systems are given, as well as the production expected from predicted feed intakes. The interactions between the grazing animal, the pasture and any supplementary feeds are complex, involving herbage availability, diet selection and substitution. To facilitate the application of these recommendations to particular grazing situations, readers are directed to decision support tools and spreadsheet programs. Nutrient Requirements of Domesticated Ruminants is based on the benchmark publication, Feeding Standards for Australian Livestock: Ruminants, published in 1990 by CSIRO PUBLISHING on behalf of the Standing Committee on Agriculture. It provides comprehensive and useful information for graziers, livestock advisors, veterinarians, feed manufacturers and animal nutrition researchers. The recommendations described are equally applicable to animals in feedlots or drought yards.

Book excerpt: In the past 20 years micronutrients have assumed great public health importance and a considerable amount of research has lead to increasing knowledge of their physiological role. Because it is a rapidly developing field, the WHO and FAO convened an Expert Consultation to evaluate the current state of knowledge. It had three main tasks: to review the full scope of vitamin and minerals requirements; to draft and adopt a report which would provide recommended nutrient intakes for vitamins A, C, D, E, and K; the B vitamins; calcium; iron; magnesium; zinc; selenium; and iodine; to identify key issues for future research and make preliminary recommendations for the handbook. This report contains the outcome of the Consultation, combined with up-to-date evidence that has since become available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents information regarding the mechanisms of protein absorption under normal and pathologic conditions, in addition to reviewing changes that occur at various stages of life. General modifiers of intestinal absorption, such as the processing of foods, the nutritional status of the individual, and disease, are explored with reference to both proteins and minerals. Inorganic macronutrients, namely calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, are discussed in relation to protein ingestion. The book also explores the concept of essential trace elements (e.g., iron, zinc, copper, and iodine) and their link to protein sufficiency. The relationship of ultratrace elements with the content of proteins in food is examined, and the book offers a fresh view of the role of certain elements, particularly zinc, on the conformation of proteins linked to DNA, hormone receptors, and gene products. Protein Nutrition and Mineral Absorption is packed with 2,300 references, 100 figures and graphs, plus 25 tables. Nutritionists and physicians will find this book to be an invaluable reference source for rationalizing nutritional interventions and diet modifications for their patients.
