Book Synopsis Tra grammatica e logica by : Manuela Moretti
Download or read book Tra grammatica e logica written by Manuela Moretti and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Leibniz, Humboldt, and the Origins of Comparativism by : Tullio De Mauro
Download or read book Leibniz, Humboldt, and the Origins of Comparativism written by Tullio De Mauro and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Leibniz and Humboldt are scholars in whose work we find a passionate interest in the history and development of languages combined with a strong theoretical commitment. Linking their names to linguistic comparativism draws attention to the contribution these scholars have made to the history of comparativism and also promotes discussion of the relationship of theory and practice in linguistic research in more general terms. In September 1986, a conference on Leibniz, Humboldt and the Origins of Comparativism' was held in Rome. The papers included in this volume are revised versions of the papers presented at the conference.

Book Synopsis Grammatical Theory and Philosophy of Language in Antiquity by : Pierre Swiggers
Download or read book Grammatical Theory and Philosophy of Language in Antiquity written by Pierre Swiggers and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective volume contains studies in the field of ancient grammar, poetics and philosophy of language. The contributions, written by specialists in the field, focus on central themes in the historiography of ancient linguistics, such as the status of grammar as a discipline in Antiquity, the relationship between poetics and grammatical theory, the constitution and development of the word class system, the descriptive format of grammars, the nature and description of specific word classes, the development of grammatical argumentation. In addition, several methodological issues in the study of ancient grammar and philosophy of language are dealt with: the problem of continuity vs. discontinuity in the history of linguistic thought, the role of schoolroom activities in the development of grammatical description and theory-formation, and problems concerning "tradition", "influence" and "originality" in ancient linguistics. The volume is rounded off with extensive indices of proper names, concepts and technical terms.
Book Synopsis La Città Del Sole by : Tommaso Campanella
Download or read book La Città Del Sole written by Tommaso Campanella and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1981-09-25 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among Renaissance utopias, The City of the Sun is perhaps second in importance only to More's more famous work. There are striking similarities between Campanella's utopia and More's, but also striking differences which reflect both changed historical circumstances and the highly original nature of Campanella's thought. La citt del sole is one of many books written by Tommaso Campanella-philosopher, scientist, astrologer, and poet-while imprisoned in Naples for his part in rebellion against the Spanish and ecclesiastical authorities who ruled his native Calabria. This first faithful and complete English translation by Daniel J. Donno is presented opposite the critically established Itaion text, with essential explanatory notes and an introductory essay. Students of Italian culture, of the history of science, and of political, philosophical, and religious thought will welcome the publication of this authoritative edition of Campanella's best-known work.

Book Synopsis Mental Language by : Claude Panaccio
Download or read book Mental Language written by Claude Panaccio and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion that human thought is structured like a language, with a precise syntax and semantics, has been pivotal in recent philosophy of mind. Yet it is not a new idea: it was systematically explored in the fourteenth century by William of Ockham and became central in late medieval philosophy. Mental Language examines the background of Ockham's innovation by tracing the history of the mental language theme in ancient and medieval thought. Panaccio identifies two important traditions: one philosophical, stemming from Plato and Aristotle, and the other theological, rooted in the Fathers of the Christian Church. The study then focuses on the merging of the two traditions in the Middle Ages, as they gave rise to detailed discussions over the structure of human thought and its relations with signs and language. Ultimately, Panaccio stresses the originality and significance of Ockham's doctrine of the oratio mentalis (mental discourse) and the strong impression it made upon his immediate successors.
