Book Synopsis Progress in Medicinal Chemistry by :
Download or read book Progress in Medicinal Chemistry written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-02 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appropriate selection of biochemical targets is one of the most important drivers of cost effectiveness in the discovery of new medicines. Despite the many advances in genetics, genomics and systems biology, ‘validation’ of a target is not achieved until therapeutic efficacy is demonstrated by a drug candidate. Volume 46 of this series reviews the medicinal chemistry aimed at six diverse targets from which important new medicines are emerging: * HIV integrase (discovery of the first-in-class inhibitor drug raltegravir)* 11-beta-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (new approach to glucocorticoid regulation)* Nicotinic a7 choline receptor (agonists and positive allosteric modulators). * Bradykinin receptor (new approach to pain therapy)* Histone deacetylase (new drugs for cancer)* 5-HT2c receptor modulators (various CNS indications) *Presents the latest research in the field of drug discovery *Publishes on an annual basis to bring you the most innovative updates in medicinal chemistry *Available as an online resource via ScienceDirect

Book Synopsis Breaking News? by : Frédérick Bastien
Download or read book Breaking News? written by Frédérick Bastien and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the thousand-channel universe, politicians must find innovative ways to reach citizens via television. Viewership for news and current affairs television programs has dropped dramatically. Meanwhile, the rise of programming that blends information with entertainment – infotainment – on Canadian television, especially in Quebec, has provided an opportunity for today’s politicians to use it to their advantage. But their appearances on these programs also fuel concerns over the declining authority of journalism in the public sphere. Breaking News? traces the development of infotainment and exposes the impact of these kinds of programs on modern political communication. Frédérick Bastien lays out the issues raised by the eroding influence of existing news gatekeepers and the implications of infotainment for politicians, journalists, and citizens, while arguing that infotainment ultimately makes a positive contribution to democratic life by piquing the audience’s interest in public affairs and motivating it to pay more attention to political news in general.
Book Synopsis Tag Questions in Conversation by : Ditte Kimps
Download or read book Tag Questions in Conversation written by Ditte Kimps and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with variable tag questions. These are utterances with a variable interrogative tag, like It's peculiar writing, isn't it, and the semi-variable tag innit, such as Nice, innit. The aim is to provide a corpus-based, comprehensive semantic-pragmatic typology of British English tag questions. Compared to existing descriptions, the proposed typology is novel in three ways. Firstly, whereas almost all existing typologies are single-layered classifications, the functions of tag questions are categorized into two parallel dimensions of interpersonal meaning: the speech function and the stance layer. Secondly, semantic generalizations are proposed for clusters of grammatical, intonational and conversational properties. Thirdly, the bottom-up description is based on a sizeable amount of authentic, spontaneous conversations, which are analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Book Synopsis Improving Service Quality by : Michael Milakovich
Download or read book Improving Service Quality written by Michael Milakovich and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-03-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizations are struggling to improve customer-focused quality in today's highly competitive domestic and global markets. Better design, implementation, and daily management of quality improvement strategies is essential for survival. Quality improvement principles, when thoughtfully applied and appropriately modified to meet all types of customer demands, are a sound means to respond to changing markets. However, when various quality and productivity theories and methods are applied without changing the organizational culture, it is very difficult to consistently deliver quality results. This important new book focuses on quality improvement methods for high performance in public and private services not covered in other books: applications focus on construction, education, government, insurance, public utilities, health care, and nonprofit services. Rather than detailing the technical processes to achieve inspection, planning, quality auditing, statistics, or risk assessment, this book presents step-by-step guidelines, recommendations, and action plans for changing service organizations to implement quality improvements. Sound theory and careful strategic planning are presented to assist readers in developing an understanding of how to select the essential elements of systems that best fit their customers' needs.

Book Synopsis Corpus Interrogation and Grammatical Patterns by : Kristin Davidse
Download or read book Corpus Interrogation and Grammatical Patterns written by Kristin Davidse and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies in this volume approach English grammatical patterns in novel ways by interrogating corpora, focusing on patterns in the verb phrase (tense, aspect and modality), the noun phrase (intensification and focus marking), complementation structures and clause combining. Some studies interrogate historical corpora to reconstruct the diachronic development of patterns such as light verb constructions, verb-particle combinations, the be a-verbing progressive and absolute constructions. Other studies analyse synchronic datasets to typify the functions in discourse of, amongst others, tag questions and it-clefts, or to elucidate some long-standing problems in the syntactic analysis of verbal or adjectival complementation patterns, thanks to the empirical detail only corpora can provide. The volume documents the practices that have been developed to guarantee optimal representativeness of corpus data, to formulate definitions of patterns that can be operationalized in extractions, and to build dimensions of variation such as text type and register into rich grammatical descriptions.
Book Synopsis Large-Scale Simulation by : Dan Chen
Download or read book Large-Scale Simulation written by Dan Chen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-Scale Simulation: Models, Algorithms, and Applications gives you firsthand insight on the latest advances in large-scale simulation techniques. Most of the research results are drawn from the authors’ papers in top-tier, peer-reviewed, scientific conference proceedings and journals. The first part of the book presents the fundamentals of large-scale simulation, including high-level architecture and runtime infrastructure. The second part covers middleware and software architecture for large-scale simulations, such as decoupled federate architecture, fault tolerant mechanisms, grid-enabled simulation, and federation communities. In the third part, the authors explore mechanisms—such as simulation cloning methods and algorithms—that support quick evaluation of alternative scenarios. The final part describes how distributed computing technologies and many-core architecture are used to study social phenomena. Reflecting the latest research in the field, this book guides you in using and further researching advanced models and algorithms for large-scale distributed simulation. These simulation tools will help you gain insight into large-scale systems across many disciplines.
