Book Synopsis Science and Judgment in Risk Assessment by : National Research Council
Download or read book Science and Judgment in Risk Assessment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public depends on competent risk assessment from the federal government and the scientific community to grapple with the threat of pollution. When risk reports turn out to be overblownâ€"or when risks are overlookedâ€"public skepticism abounds. This comprehensive and readable book explores how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can improve its risk assessment practices, with a focus on implementation of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. With a wealth of detailed information, pertinent examples, and revealing analysis, the volume explores the "default option" and other basic concepts. It offers two views of EPA operations: The first examines how EPA currently assesses exposure to hazardous air pollutants, evaluates the toxicity of a substance, and characterizes the risk to the public. The second, more holistic, view explores how EPA can improve in several critical areas of risk assessment by focusing on cross-cutting themes and incorporating more scientific judgment. This comprehensive volume will be important to the EPA and other agencies, risk managers, environmental advocates, scientists, faculty, students, and concerned individuals.

Book Synopsis Factors Affecting Toxicity Identification Evaluation by : KM. Jop
Download or read book Factors Affecting Toxicity Identification Evaluation written by KM. Jop and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical examination of the data generated during the toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) programs showed that to be confident in isolating the responsible toxicants present in the effluent, a large number of samples have to be collected and fractionated, since a wastewater sample may be representative only of the discharge at the time of sampling. Changes in effluent toxicity can result from varying concentrations of individual toxicants or different toxicants, due to changes in plant operation and/or changes in source water quality characteristics. Source water may be toxic by itself or may affect the toxicity of wastewater constituents. Understanding the contribution of background sources to effluent toxicity including the nature, frequency, concentration in use, and relative toxicity of additives introduced during industrial processes is important in the TIE investigation.

Download or read book Toxicity Reduction written by Davis Ford and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-05-18 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the reauthorization of the Clean Water Act in 1987, the U.S. EPA specifically addressed toxics management. In addition to the requirement to eliminate discharge of toxics, there can be a requirement to conduct a toxicity reduction evaluation (TRE). The scope of toxicity reduction varies from the very simple and inexpensive to the highly complex and costly. This book, volume three of the Water Quality Management Library, provides a complete overview of toxicity reduction evaluation. The book presents the testing and removal of toxicants, toxicity testing procedures, sampling techniques, baseline collection data, and source identification. Plus, the book presents toxicity reduction methodologies including unit processes necessary for organic toxicant control using biological and physical chemical methodologies as well as selected unit processes necessary for inorganic toxicant control.
