Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tasmania is Australia's most decentralised State in terms of population living beyond the capital city. There is 'history and heritage' everywhere...around every corner. In many places there remain numerous buildings particularly sandstone buildings and other relics of times past. Many communities still exist in relative isolation even today. but there is more. According to ancestry organisation websites "Based on the records, demographics, birth rates, census data and immigration patterns, the sites estimated 22 per cent of living Australians had a convict ancestor." Around 50% of early convicts arrived via Van Diemen's Land/Tasmania. In other words about 11 per cent of living Australians [or around 5 million] have a Tasmanian family history connection. Tasmania's Vanishing Towns describes hundreds of towns, villages, communities and is deal for the real or virtual traveller to Tasmania. easy to read, comprehensive yet concise with hundreds of illustrations.

Download or read book Everyone and Everything in Trollope: The complete nonfiction and the topicon written by George Newlin and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 1220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this four-volume set is accurate, and the following description gives only a small sense of the scope and detail of this scholarly labor of love. The first two volumes comprise a survey of all 47 novels written by Trollope (1815-1882), with chapter-by-chapter plot summaries and lists of characters identified in Trollope's works and arranged in hierarchical importance. The third volume gives similar treatment to short stories, sketches, and plays and includes a glossary covering the entire oeuvre and a series of 17 indexes, among other materials. Trollope's nonfiction pieces are treated in Volume 4, arranged by subject, followed by an extensive "Topicon," which constitutes a topical concordance to Trollope's works. Newlin's affiliation is not stated, but his involvement and expertise, of course, are plainly evident; he has prepared this reference for an audience of like mind. Download or read book Epidemics written by Samuel K. Cohn Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By investigating thousands of descriptions of epidemics reaching back before the fifth-century-BCE Plague of Athens to the distrust and violence that erupted with Ebola in 2014, Epidemics challenges a dominant hypothesis in the study of epidemics, that invariably across time and space, epidemics provoked hatred, blaming of the 'other', and victimizing bearers of epidemic diseases, particularly when diseases were mysterious, without known cures or preventive measures, as with AIDS during the last two decades of the twentieth century. However, scholars and public intellectuals, especially post-AIDS, have missed a fundamental aspect of the history of epidemics. Instead of sparking hatred and blame, this study traces epidemics' socio-psychological consequences across time and discovers a radically different picture: that epidemic diseases have more often unified societies across class, race, ethnicity, and religion, spurring self-sacrifice and compassion.

Download or read book Values in Cities written by James Lesh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining urban heritage in twentieth-century Australia, James Lesh reveals how evolving ideas of value and significance shaped cities and places. Over decades, a growing number of sites and areas were found to be valuable by communities and professionals. Places perceived to have value were often conserved. Places perceived to lack value became subject to modernisation, redevelopment, and renewal. From the 1970s, alongside strengthened activism and legislation, with the innovative Burra Charter (1979), the values-based model emerged for managing the aesthetic, historic, scientific, and social significance of historic environments. Values thus transitioned from an implicit to an overt component of urban, architectural, and planning conservation. The field of conservation became a noted profession and discipline. Conservation also had a broader role in celebrating the Australian nation and in reconciling settler colonialism for the twentieth century. Integrating urban history and heritage studies, this book provides the first longitudinal study of the twentieth-century Australian heritage movement. It advocates for innovative and reflexive modes of heritage practice responsive to urban, social, and environmental imperatives. As the values-based model continues to shape conservation worldwide, this book is an essential reference for researchers, students, and practitioners concerned with the past and future of cities and heritage. Written by a team of economic historians The Big End of Town, first published in 2004, is a proper business history of twentieth-century Australia. This book traces the evolution of large business enterprises in Australia, from the giants of the nineteenth century - such as Dalgety's, CSR and BHP - to the contemporary leaders in Newscorp and Qantas. It delves into why the market leaders became the major players, examines what was crucial to their success, and their roles in leading the Australian economy. By investigating their evolution this book provides a useful evaluation of the factors that have led to their competitive success and provides an essential guide for all businesses in Australia and beyond.
