Book Synopsis Hyde Park, Illinois by : Max Grinnell

Book excerpt: Since the early twentieth century, Hyde Park has been known as a refuge and incubator for intellectuals, artists, novelists, poets, and free thinkers. Its best known institution, the University of Chicago, drew many of these persons close to its boundaries with the promise of a steady diet of conflicting ideas and lofty conversations. Throughout the first few decades of the twentieth century, Hyde Park went through a steady period of growth, both in residents and the construction of a dense network of walk-up apartment buildings and commercial facilities that offered a stark contrast to the more bucolic atmosphere of Hyde Park before the Columbian Exposition of 1893. By the late 1940s, parts of Hyde Park were showing signs of blight, as the area continued to house larger numbers of migrants from other depressed areas of the United States and programs of deferred or nonexistent maintenance began to have irreversible effects on the built environment. Images of America: Hyde Park, Illinois, focuses most of its attention on the period after World War II, all the way through the creation of the Hyde Park-Kenwood Urban Renewal Project, the first major urban renewal project in the United States.

Book Synopsis University of Chicago by : Jay Pridmore
Download or read book University of Chicago written by Jay Pridmore and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2006-02-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newest title in the Princeton Architectural Press Campus Guide series takes readers on a tour of the University of Chicago, an institution that since its founding in 1890 has exerted a profound impact on American higher education. This elegantly written guide shows the campus as a wonderfully eccentric and vastly underappreciated element of Chicagos revered built environment. Designed in the English Gothic style of its time, the original campus, planned by Chicago architect Henry Ives Cobb, had a commonality of vision that made it equal in quality to the finest in America. As the traditional reliance on the Gothic gave way to modernist styles, the campus was expanded with buildings by such notable architects as Eero Saarinen, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Walter Netsch. The university's most recent additions include Cesar Pelli's 2003 Gerald Ratner Athletics Center and Rafael Violy's Graduate School of Business complex. Beautifully photographed in full color, the guide presents an architectural walk of this campus distinguished by landmark buildings.

Book Synopsis A3 & His Algebra by : Nancy E. Albert
Download or read book A3 & His Algebra written by Nancy E. Albert and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A3 & HIS ALGEBRA is the true story of a struggling young boy from Chicago's west side who grew to become a force in American mathematics. For nearly 50 years, A. A. Albert thrived at the University of Chicago, one of the world's top centers for algebra. His "pure research" in algebra found its way into modern computers, rocket guidance systems, cryptology, and quantum mechanics, the basic theory behind atomic energy calculations. This first-hand account of the life of a world-renowned American mathematician is written by Albert's daughter. Her memoir, which favors a general audience, offers a personal and revealing look at the multidimensional life of an academic who had a lasting impact on his profession. SOME QUOTATIONS FROM PROFESSOR ALBERT: "There are really few bad students of mathematics. There are, instead, many bad teachers and bad curricula..." "The difficulty of learning mathematics is increased by the fact that in so many high schools this very difficult subject is considered to be teachable by those whose major subject is language, botany, or even physical education." "It is still true that in a majority of American universities the way to find the Department of Mathematics is to ask for the location of the oldest and most decrepit building on campus." "The production of a single scientist of first magnitude will have a greater impact on our civilization than the production of fifty mediocre Ph.D.'s." "Freedom is having the time to do research...Even in mathematics there are 'fashions'. This doesn't mean that the researcher is controlled by them. Many go their own way, ignoring the fashionable. That's part of the strength of a great university."

Book Synopsis Chicago's South Shore by : Charles Celander
Download or read book Chicago's South Shore written by Charles Celander and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago's South Shore has a mature, urban nature that disguises its evolution from marshland to farmland, and from suburb to city neighborhood. Located between Jackson Park and Seventy-ninth Street, and from Lake Michigan to Stony Island, the marshland of the 1800s was first settled by German and Scandinavian truck and flower farmers. Beginning in the 1890s, the Illinois Central Railroad Electric Line expanded into what was largely undeveloped farmland, setting the stage for one hundred years of development and demographic change. From Hyde Park to Jeffery Manor and South Chicago, the pictures contained in Chicago's South Shore show many of the faces, places, and events that marked the evolution of the area. German, Swedish, Irish, and African-American families are just a fraction of the many groups who have called South Shore home. Today, largely through the redevelopment efforts of South Shore Bank, the neighborhood promises to build on its glorious past and play a vital role in Chicago's future.
