This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While community quality-of-life indicators are gaining much needed attention in both scholarly work and practice, their application in the areas of parks, recreation and tourism management are not as well known. The applicability of indicator systems for natural resource and natural resource area management within the parks and recreation arena is very high, including urban parks and recreation programs and their influence on quality of life. Tourism is also an area that needs much more work in terms of assessing impacts as well as developing indicators for gauging progress in the long term. All three areas are an integrated discipline and most programs throughout the developed world are housed co-jointly. There are several researchers across the globe who are conducting innovative work in these areas. The editors feel that a volume on the topic will spur additional interests as well as serve to lead the research efforts.

This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience demonstrates that none of the available measures regarding biological effects of pollution can be considered ideal, which is due to the complexity inherent in assessing the environmental quality of a system. In fact, it is always preferable to combine a suite of indices providing complementary information. This book aims at helping researchers and students, as well as managers and authorities of coastal areas in selecting the most suitable ecological indicators for each case, taking into account the type of disturbance they want to assess and the data available to do it. A user friendly guide is proposed, accounting different theoretical approaches and discussing the results of its application in different geographical areas. Recommendations are provided regarding the most adequate application of different indices, illustrating for instance in what situations their use is recommendable, or on the contrary not advisable, depending on the characteristics of the disturbance, the type of data, or the level of taxonomic identification of the organisms.

Book Synopsis Environmental Planning in the Caribbean by : Jonathan Pugh
Download or read book Environmental Planning in the Caribbean written by Jonathan Pugh and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated by case studies from both smaller nations, such as Carriacon, Barbados and St Lucia and larger countries, including Cuba, Mexico and Jamaica, this volume brings together leading writers concerned with environmental planning in the Caribbean to provide an interdisciplinary contemporary critical overview. They argue that context is central to the practice of environmental planning in this region. Rather than focusing on a deterministic colonial geography and history, this volume proposes that, whilst a wide range of foreign planning influences can be felt in different contexts, environmental planning emerges in specific settings, through the fluid interaction between local and global relations of power. Thus, a number of chapters explore the effects of external discourses upon the region, while others examine discourses on the US-style democracy and on tourism.
