Book excerpt: Rural communities, often the first indicators of economic downturns, play an important role in planning for development and sustainability. Increasingly, these communities are compelled to reimagine the paths that lead not only to economic success, but also to the cultural, social, environmental, and institutional pillars of sustainability. As the contributors to this volume demonstrate, there are many examples of such innovation and creativity, and many communities that seek out new ways to build the collaboration, capacity, and autonomy necessary to survive and flourish. Book excerpt: This edited volume examines the multiple dimensions of sustainability in the Circumpolar North, a territory facing unprecedented environmental and social challenges at the start of the 21st century. The chapters explore the cultural, economic, political and environmental aspects of sustainability, as well as examples of successful research collaboration with northern and indigenous communities. By examining a wide range of issues and places, the contributions highlight the diversity of the Circumpolar North, the challenges and opportunities it faces, and the ways in which people and communities are adapting to and influencing the changing circumstances of this dynamic region. Contributors include both Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers from eleven different countries and from across the career spectrum. This book will appeal to an academic audience interested in the manifold facets of sustainability in the Arctic and sub-arctic regions of the world.

Book excerpt: Over the centuries, people living in Newfoundland and Labrador have demonstrated remarkable resourcefulness in order to reap the bounty of both sea and land. However, despite renewed interest in traditional Newfoundland and Labrador cuisine, the reality is that many cannot attain healthy and affordable food. Food Futures contributes to the Canadian food studies literature by exploring the origins, present day complexities, and future of the Newfoundland and Labrador food system. This interdisciplinary collection draws from the research of 24 scholars in disciplines ranging from anthropology to biology. Collectively, the authors offer a vision for a sustainable food system that meets the dual goals of achieving food security and food sovereignty for all.

This much-anticipated second edition brings the discussion up to date, applying the same thorough analysis to illuminate the rapid changes now shaping our regional landscapes. This new edition draws upon contemporary analyses, projects, and literature to address issues of spatial complexity now facing regional planners in Canada. Special attention is paid to he regional planning dimensions of climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability across Canada, the development inequities faced in peripheral resource regions, the role that Aboriginal peoples must play in the planning of their regions, and the distinctive planning needs of metropolitan regions across the country. This book challenges planners, educators, and policy makers to engage with the latest thinking and strive for best practices in twenty-first century regional planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a sustainable community? The pressing need to answer this simple question is what prompted John Pierce and Ann Dale to gather the essays in this volume. Communities, Development, and Sustainability across Canada is a timely synthesis of work on how Canadian communities can achieve sustainable development. It bridges the gap between theory and praxis and brings together academics, policy makers, and community activists, all of whom have argued for increased local participation in sustainable community development. Communities have become the weak link in efforts to refashion relations between the environment and the economy. The goal of this book is not simply to describe problems but also to suggest answers, not simply to offer theory but also to promote action, so that Canadian communities can better achieve sustainable development.

Book excerpt: This report is currently available in an electronic format only. To view the report and others published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), please visit IUCN's website. Governance for sustainability is defined as the set of written and unwritten rules that link ecological citizenship with institutions and norms of governance. It is a complex topic because it addresses the three issues of globalization, democracy and sustainability. No form of governance can succeed if there is no common bond between those who govern and those who are being governed. The real issue is whether the common good, that is, the sustainability of life, can be pursued through democratic forms of governance. This publication compiles information, evaluations and case studies to enable the reader to explore and reflect upon governance for sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines both subjective & objective social indicators of community sustainability in the Western Newfoundland Model Forest, with a specific focus on the communities of Corner Brook, Pasadena, Lark Harbour, and Rocky Harbour as these are representative of the region's community types. The objective measures are in the form of Canadian Census data and the subjective measures come from personal interviews with community residents. Six key indicators are used to assess community sustainability: population, employment, income, human capital, poverty, and real estate. The findings are synthesized in discussions of resource dependence, the differences in what the indicators show for each of the communities, and the contrasts between what the subjective & objective indicators show.
