Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioral economics sees “nudges” as ways to encourage people to re-evaluate their priorities in such a way that they voluntarily change their behavior, leading to personal and social benefits. This book examines nudging as a tool for influencing human behavior in health policy. The authors investigate the contemporary scientific discourse on nudging and enrich it with an ontological, epistemological and praxeological analysis of human behavior. On the basis of detailed analyses of the literature and a systemic review, nudging tools are defined in the paradigm of prospect theory. In addition to the theoretical contribution, the book also examines and offers suggestions on the practice of health policy regarding obesity, malnutrition, and especially type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Answers do exist for seemingly incurable diseases. The information contained in this book applies to a diverse variety of conditions ranging from ADD, Autism, Scleroderma, and MS to psoriasis and eczema. We all have the ability to reach good health by changing to the correct materials such as dental, clothing and furniture. This book follows Jane Parker's journey from the diagnosis of systemic Scleroderma, a fatal autoimmune disease, to good health. After a year of unanswered questions, numerous doctors and alternative practitioners, she finally received a correct diagnosis of Scleroderma. In researching the disease she found there was no known way to cure it. All existing information held no hope for survival and definitely none for a reversal, but this didn't stop her search to cure this deadly disease. She tried many different approaches, from conventional medicine to alternative therapies with no apparent results or answers to her problems. She finally found the answer through Victor Dyment, a Russian healer/scientist who has been doing research into the effects of different materials on health. Victor found the answers that can help reverse many diseases, not only Scleroderma. Under Victor's guidance she is the first one who has completely reversed this irreversible condition. This book describes the many steps Jane took, including the failures as well as the triumphs, in her struggle to overcome this deadly disease. This book follows Victor's research from its beginnings in Russia to the development of his Health Frequency theory and the effects of materials on our health. With the increasing awareness of environmental health hazards this book is vital for both children and adults. By sharing these experiences and knowledge, we want to make your journey to health a lot shorter than Jane's.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with orienting health care workers in district health systems in developing countries to ways and means of overcoming problems, and describes briefly how district health systems can be improved. The book is organized around nine issues in nine chapters, each of which is an integral part of a district planning cycle. The opening three chapters show how to assess the existing district health system in terms of national policies and support, analysis of the current system, and evaluation of district priorities. Chapters 4 through 7 focus on actions to be taken. The initial task of setting goals is discussed using examples and establishing general categories. The book next treats the action program including curative services, maternal and child health and health promotion, and prevention and control of disease. The next chapter focuses on the increase in program effectiveness brought about by joint action of families, individuals, and communities. Chapter 7 discusses key issues pertaining to good operational management. The final two chapters focus on monitoring (i.e., the use of tracer diseases and sentinel sites) and tips for evaluating interventions and learning from experience. Nine figures, 10 tables, and practical examples and case histories accompany the text. A list of 12 references is appended. (JB)

Chapters identify, examine, and offer realistic recommendations for achieving critical goals, among them: Supporting healthy people and communities within planetary boundaries Reduction and prevention of food waste Combining health and sustainability on the plate "Serving sustainable and healthy food to consumers and decision makers": from commitment to action. Investing in healthier and more sustainable production. Ensuring a healthy sustainable diet is a goal of all public policies. Towards Healthy and Sustainable Diets is geared toward professionals and policymakers dealing with food, nutrition, and environmental topics seeking new perspectives on longstanding issues in these interrelated areas. It also makes a suitable reference for students studying and conducting research in these areas.

Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how political, social, economic and institutional factors in eight emerging economies have combined to generate diverse outcomes in their move towards universal health care. Structured in three parts, the book begins by framing social policy as an integral system in its own right. The following two parts go on to discuss the opportunities and challenges of achieving universal health care in Thailand, Brazil and China, and survey the obstacles facing India, Indonesia, Russia, South Africa and Venezuela in the reform of their health care systems. The evolution of social policy systems and the cases in this volume together demonstrate that universalism in health care is continuously redefined by the interactions between diverse political forces and through specific policy processes. At a time when international and national-level discourse around health systems has once again brought universalism to the fore, this edited collection offers a timely contribution to the field in its thorough analysis of health care reform in emerging economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivated by the explosion of molecular data on humans-particularly data associated with individual patients-and the sense that there are large, as-yet-untapped opportunities to use this data to improve health outcomes, Toward Precision Medicine explores the feasibility and need for "a new taxonomy of human disease based on molecular biology" and develops a potential framework for creating one. The book says that a new data network that integrates emerging research on the molecular makeup of diseases with clinical data on individual patients could drive the development of a more accurate classification of diseases and ultimately enhance diagnosis and treatment. The "new taxonomy" that emerges would define diseases by their underlying molecular causes and other factors in addition to their traditional physical signs and symptoms. The book adds that the new data network could also improve biomedical research by enabling scientists to access patients' information during treatment while still protecting their rights. This would allow the marriage of molecular research and clinical data at the point of care, as opposed to research information continuing to reside primarily in academia. Toward Precision Medicine notes that moving toward individualized medicine requires that researchers and health care providers have access to very large sets of health- and disease-related data linked to individual patients. These data are also critical for developing the information commons, the knowledge network of disease, and ultimately the new taxonomy.
