Book excerpt: This paper presents a rational approach to modelling the triple velocity correlations that appear in the transport equations for the Reynolds stresses. All existing models of these correlations have largely been formulated on phenomenological grounds and are defective in one important aspect: they all neglect to allow for the dependence of these correlations on the local gradients of mean velocity. The mathematical necessity for this dependence will be demonstrated in the paper. The present contribution lies in the novel use of Group Representation Theory to determine the most general tensorial form of these correlations in terms of all the second- and third-order tensor quantities that appear in the exact equations that govern their evolution. The requisite representation did not exist in the literature and therefore had to be developed specifically for this purpose by Professor G. F. Smith. The outcome of this work is a mathematical framework for the construction of algebraic, explicit, and rational models for the triple velocity correlations that are theoretically consistent and include all the correct dependencies. Previous models are reviewed, and all are shown to be an incomplete subset of this new representation, even to lowest order. Younis, B. A. and Gatski, T. B. and Speziale, C. G. Book Synopsis Prediction of Turbulent Flows by : Geoff Hewitt
Download or read book Prediction of Turbulent Flows written by Geoff Hewitt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-06-08 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prediction of turbulent flows is of paramount importance in the development of complex engineering systems involving flow, heat and mass transfer, and chemical reactions. Arising from a programme held at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge, this volume reviews the current situation regarding the prediction of such flows through the use of modern computational fluid dynamics techniques, and attempts to address the inherent problem of modelling turbulence. In particular, the current physical understanding of such flows is summarised and the resulting implications for simulation discussed. The volume continues by surveying current approximation methods whilst discussing their applicability to industrial problems. This major work concludes by providing a specific set of guidelines for selecting the most appropriate model for a given problem. Unique in its breadth and critical approach, this book will be of immense value to experienced practitioners and researchers, continuing the UK's strong tradition in fluid dynamics.

Book Synopsis Homogeneous Turbulence Dynamics by : Pierre Sagaut
Download or read book Homogeneous Turbulence Dynamics written by Pierre Sagaut and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides state-of-the-art results and theories in homogeneous turbulence, including anisotropy and compressibility effects with extension to quantum turbulence, magneto-hydodynamic turbulence and turbulence in non-newtonian fluids. Each chapter is devoted to a given type of interaction (strain, rotation, shear, etc.), and presents and compares experimental data, numerical results, analysis of the Reynolds stress budget equations and advanced multipoint spectral theories. The role of both linear and non-linear mechanisms is emphasized. The link between the statistical properties and the dynamics of coherent structures is also addressed. Despite its restriction to homogeneous turbulence, the book is of interest to all people working in turbulence, since the basic physical mechanisms which are present in all turbulent flows are explained. The reader will find a unified presentation of the results and a clear presentation of existing controversies. Special attention is given to bridge the results obtained in different research communities. Mathematical tools and advanced physical models are detailed in dedicated chapters.
