Book Synopsis Ecological Regions of North America by :
Download or read book Ecological Regions of North America written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of papers presented in 1987, showing a variety of types of research being carried out in different geological settings in Canada and Finland. The papers indicate the value of grassroots studies in glacial geology and how the basis for drift prospecting is a thorough understanding of the provenance, stratigraphy, and ice flow directions of glacial sequences, backed by data on the geochemistry, lithology, and mineralogy of glacial sediments. Abstracts are included for each paper.

Book Synopsis The Green Stone Age: Exploration and Exploitation of Minerals for Green Technologies by : M. Smelror
Download or read book The Green Stone Age: Exploration and Exploitation of Minerals for Green Technologies written by M. Smelror and published by Geological Society of London Special Publications. This book was released on 2023-06-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raw materials have been essential in the development of all human societies through history and moving into a greener, more carbon-lean future we become increasingly reliant on access to a growing number of raw materials. Minerals for new technologies improving the quality of our lives and the environment are the building blocks of the new Green Stone Age. This Special Publication presents ongoing research and mapping programmes focusing on minerals needed for the transformation to greener societies. In addition to new exploration models and shared geological information on the different prospective currently mined areas, the notion of criticality in different countries is discussed and examples of ongoing national and cross-country research and mapping programmes are presented. In addition to the resource/reserve and technical-economic aspects, the social and environmental dimensions are also a focus in some of the contributions, as holistic approaches to the exploration and exploitation of critical minerals and materials are needed to fulfil the green transition and goals for the Green Stone Age.

Download or read book Lithium Needs and Resources written by S. S. Penner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lithium: Needs and Resources focuses on the applications, reactions, and increasing demand for lithium, as well as the exploration methods used in the extraction of this element. The selection first offers information on the lithium industry, including markets for lithium metal and lithium compounds and lithium reserves. The text then surveys past and future development of the market for lithium in the global aluminum industry. Topics include effects of lithium carbonate, demand for aluminum, development of US demand, and survey of aluminum plants. The compilation takes a look at lithium ore in Brazil and lithium-bearing rocks in Clark County, Nevada, USA, including geology of lithium districts, future perspectives, and mineralogy and distribution of lithium. The text also discusses hydrogen-mineral reactions and their application to the removal of iron from spodumene. Considerations include iron removal process, crystal chemistry of spodumene, and hydrogen-mineral reactions. The publication surveys the deposits of lithium in the United Kingdom; exploration methods in the Tanco mine area in Manitoba, Canada; and the role of the U.S. Geological Survey in the lithium industry. The selection is a vital source of information for readers interested in studying the sources and applications of lithium.
