Book Synopsis Metatheory in Social Science by : Donald Winslow Fiske
Download or read book Metatheory in Social Science written by Donald Winslow Fiske and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1986-03-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the nature of the social sciences? What kinds of knowledge can they—and should they—hope to create? Are objective viewpoints possible and can universal laws be discovered? Questions like these have been asked with increasing urgency in recent years, as some philosophers and researchers have perceived a "crisis" in the social sciences. Metatheory in Social Science offers many provocative arguments and analyses of basic conceptual frameworks for the study of human behavior. These are offered primarily by practicing researchers and are related to problems in disciplines as diverse as sociology, psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, and philosophy of science. While various points of view are expressed in these nineteen essays, they have in common several themes, including the comparison of social and natural science, the role of knowledge in meeting the demands of society and its pressing problems, and the nature and role of subjectivity in science. Some authors hold that subjectivity cannot be studied scientifically; others argue that it can and must be if progress in knowledge is to be made. The essays demonstrate the philosophical pluralism they discuss and give a wide range of alternative positions on the future of the social and behavioral sciences in a postpositivist intellectual world.

Book Synopsis Thinking Strategically by : National Research Council
Download or read book Thinking Strategically written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-10-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Climate Change Science Program (CCSP) and its predecessor U.S. Global Change Research Program have sponsored climate research and observations for nearly 15 years, yet the overall progress of the program has not been measured systematically. Metricsâ€"a system of measurement that includes the item being measured, the unit of measurement, and the value of the unitâ€"offer a tool for measuring such progress; improving program performance; and demonstrating program successes to Congress, the Office of Management and Budget, and the public. This report lays out a framework for creating and implementing metrics for the CCSP. A general set of metrics provides a starting point for identifying the most important measures, and the principles provide guidance for refining the metrics and avoiding unintended consequences.

Book Synopsis Towards the definition of an information quality metric for information fusion models by : Horacio Paggi
Download or read book Towards the definition of an information quality metric for information fusion models written by Horacio Paggi and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing information quality has become important in cyber-physical systems dealing with big data. In this regard, different models have been proposed, mainly in flat peer-to-peer networks, in which exchanging information efficiently is a key aspect due to scarce resources. However, little research has been conducted on information quality metrics for cyber-physical scenarios. In this paper, we propose an information quality metric and show its application to an information fusion model. It is a “model-oriented quality metric” since it allows non-predefined variants on its configuration depending on the application domain. The model was tested on several simulations using open datasets. The results obtained in the performance of the model confirm the validity of the information quality metric, proposed in this paper, on which the model is based. The model may have a wide variety of applications such as mobile recommendation or decision making in critical environments (emergencies, war, and so on).
