This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Body image plays an important role in adolescence as this is the stage where dramatic changes occur in one’s different aspects of health. Objectives: This study aims to assess the body image evaluation, the satisfaction and dissatisfaction towards body image, of female adolescents through the use of Body Shape Questionnaire-34 (BSQ-34) and eating attitudes through Eating Attitudes-26 Test (EAT-26) self-report questionnaires. Moreover, the extent of the relationship between the two variables will be examined and utilized for the development of a mental health promotion program. Method: Descriptive Correlational Design was employed in examining the relationship between body image and eating attitudes among the two hundred eighty-seven (N=287) non-clinical female adolescents from private schools. Data from BSQ-34 and EAT-26 were analysed through Product Moment-correlation Coefficient or Pearson’s r, Arithmetic Mean, Frequency and Percentage. Results: Majority of the respondents evaluated their body image as Satisfied accounting to 65% (n=186). The results of eating attitudes of the respondents showed low forms of dieting (M=8.00), bulimic symptoms and food preoccupation resulted to low (M=2.83), and oral control resulted to low practice (M=3.25) among adolescents. Part C of EAT-26 revealed that majority of adolescents have not practice compensatory behaviours indicative of eating disorder symptoms and significant weight loss. Moreover, body image evaluation is strongly correlated with eating attitudes. Conclusions: Majority of adolescents practice low forms of attitudes and behaviours indicative of eating disorder risk, and were generally Satisfied with their body image. However, study found that Dissatisfaction is of considerable number as well with 35% of the respondents, fostering and sustaining positive body image is essential for this susceptible group. A proposed program for body image was adopted and modified for school use.

Eating disorders and body change strategies are also addressed, as well as the challenges faced by youngsters affected by conditions causing visible differences, such as hair loss in cancer patients. The book also presents original research, including the results from a large Australian study of the body image and associated health behaviours of adolescent boys, and the results of a study of current teaching practices relating to body image. This book was released on 2024-02-05 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, "Beyond the Looking Glass: Understanding the Interplay of Body Image, Social Anxiety, and Eating Disorders in Young Adults," we have explored the complex relationship between body image dissatisfaction, social anxiety, and disordered eating behaviors. Throughout our journey, we have gained a deeper understanding of how these factors interplay and impact the lives of young adults. It is important for teens and young adults to recognize that their mental and physical health are intertwined. Our body image, how we perceive ourselves, can greatly inuence our social interactions and overall wellbeing. The pressure to conform to societal beauty standards can lead to body dissatisfaction and, in turn, contribute to the development of social anxiety and disordered eating behaviors. However, it is essential to remember that there is no one-size- ts-all denition of beauty. It is crucial to embrace diversity and celebrate our unique qualities. Instead of striving for an unattainable ideal, we should focus on nurturing a healthy mind and body. Building a healthy mind involves cultivating positive self-esteem and practicing self-compassion. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we should focus on our own growth and personal achievements. Surrounding ourselves with a supportive network of friends and family who uplift and encourage us can also contribute to our mental well-being. Taking care of our physical health is equally important. This means fueling our bodies with nutritious foods, engaging in regular physical activity that we enjoy, and developing a healthy relationship with food. It is vital to listen to our body's needs and honor its signals rather than succumbing to restrictive diets or excessive exercise.

Download or read book Fat Talk written by Mimi Nichter and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teen-aged girls hate their bodies and diet obsessively, or so we hear. News stories and reports of survey research often claim that as many as three girls in five are on a diet at any given time, and they grimly suggest that many are “at risk” for eating disorders. But how much can we believe these frightening stories? What do teenagers mean when they say they are dieting? Anthropologist Mimi Nichter spent three years interviewing middle school and high school girls—lower-middle to middle class, white, black, and Latina—about their feelings concerning appearance, their eating habits, and dieting. In Fat Talk, she tells us what the girls told her, and explores the influence of peers, family, and the media on girls’ sense of self. Letting girls speak for themselves, she gives us the human side of survey statistics. Most of the white girls in her study disliked something about their bodies and knew all too well that they did not look like the envied, hated “perfect girl.” But they did not diet so much as talk about dieting. Nichter wryly argues—in fact some of the girls as much as tell her—that “fat talk” is a kind of social ritual among friends, a way of being, or creating solidarity. It allows the girls to show that they are concerned about their weight, but it lessens the urgency to do anything about it, other than diet from breakfast to lunch. Nichter concludes that if anything, girls are watching their weight and what they eat, as well as trying to get some exercise and eat “healthfully” in a way that sounds much less disturbing than stories about the epidemic of eating disorders among American girls. Black girls, Nichter learned, escape the weight obsession and the “fat talk” that is so pervasive among white girls. The African-American girls she talked with were much more satisfied with their bodies than were the white girls. For them, beauty was a matter of projecting attitude (“’tude”) and moving with confidence and style. Fat Talk takes the reader into the lives of girls as daughters, providing insights into how parents talk to their teenagers about their changing bodies. The black girls admired their mothers’ strength; the white girls described their mothers’ own “fat talk,” their fathers’ uncomfortable teasing, and the way they and their mothers sometimes dieted together to escape the family “curse”—flabby thighs, ample hips. Moving beyond negative stereotypes of mother–daughter relationships, Nichter sensitively examines the issues and struggles that mothers face in bringing up their daughters, particularly in relation to body image, and considers how they can help their daughters move beyond rigid and stereotyped images of ideal beauty.

Download or read book The Relationship Between the Susceptibility of Eating Disorders, Self-esteem, and Body Image in Female Collegiate Student-athletes written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research indicates athletes participating in competitive sports may be at a higher risk for developing an eating disorder than non-athletes (Costin, 2007). A variety of factors may lead to an eating disorder. This study looked at the relationship between the susceptibility to eating disorders, self-esteem, and body image and Division I, Division II, and Division III female collegiate student-athletes, and it considers whether competition level was a factor for developing an eating disorder. In this study, Division I, Division II, and Division III female athletes were asked to complete a questionnaire that included three subscales of the EDI-2, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Body Cathexis, in order to determine the eating and exercising attitudes of female student-athletes. The study's findings showed that there was not a relationship between a student-athletes' competition level and their susceptibility to eating disorders; however, there was a relationship between student-athletes' self-esteem level and body image satisfaction level and their susceptibility to eating disorders. It is recommended athletic departments test their student-athletes' levels of self-esteem and body image in order to set up appropriate interventions programs for athletes who may be susceptible to eating disorders due to their self-esteem levels and/or body image satisfaction levels.
Download or read book Schooled on Fat written by Nicole Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Reader Views Literary Award, Societal Issues and the Reviewers Choice Best Non-fiction Book of the Year, Specialty Awards, Schooled on Fat explores how body image, social status, fat stigma and teasing, food consumption behaviors, and exercise practices intersect in the daily lives of adolescent girls and boys. Based on nine months of fieldwork at a high school located near Tucson, Arizona, the book draws on social, linguistic, and theoretical contexts to illustrate how teens navigate the fraught realities of body image within a high school culture that reinforced widespread beliefs about body size as a matter of personal responsibility while offering limited opportunity to exercise and an abundance of fattening junk foods. Taylor also traces policy efforts to illustrate where we are as a nation in addressing childhood obesity and offers practical strategies schools and parents can use to promote teen wellness. This book is ideal for courses on the body, fat studies, gender studies, language and culture, school culture and policy, public ethnography, deviance, and youth culture.
