Book Synopsis The Tourist Places of the World by : Philippe Violier
Download or read book The Tourist Places of the World written by Philippe Violier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formerly a largely Western practice, leisure travel is today the most dynamic industry in the world in terms of growth. Developments in transport and communication systems mean tourism is now an integral part of our understanding of the world, and involved in the exponential increase of links between societies and different cultures. The Tourist Places of the World has comprehensive data on the number of international visitors annually. It also includes an original map ? not dictated by country, but by major tourist areas and places. The hierarchy of destinations drawn is highlighted by the different levels of popularity and passenger flows; from the universal places where all societies meet to the still unfrequented places. Beyond the recognition of global tourism, the challenge is to understand how and why societies can achieve a better life through sustainable development, which encompasses social, economic and environmental dimensions.

Book Synopsis The Tourist as a Metaphor of the Social World by : Graham Dann
Download or read book The Tourist as a Metaphor of the Social World written by Graham Dann and published by CABI. This book was released on 2002 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of papers from the prestigious Research Committee on International Tourism presented at the World Congress of the International Sociological Association, Brisbane, Australia, July 2002. It provides a sociological and anthropological critique of existing tourism theory as well as some directions for its future development and research. While much of the present understanding of the tourist and tourism is grounded in metaphor (e.g. tourism as a sacred journey, tourism as play, the tourist as a child, etc.) such analogies need to be linked to transformations in tourism generating and receiving societies. Hence the focus on the tourist and everyday life, socio-psychological dimensions of the tourist experience, the tourist and conflicting expectations, and the tourist in a changing world.
Book Synopsis Tourisme et insularité by : Jean-Marie Furt
Download or read book Tourisme et insularité written by Jean-Marie Furt and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Between the Seas written by Deborah Paci and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Between the Seas, Deborah Paci takes a comparative view of islandness in island identities through case studies of islands in the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. These case studies primarily include, in the Baltic case, the Åland Islands, Gotland, Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Ruhnu; and in the Mediterranean case, Sicily, Malta, Sardinia and Corsica. Examining multiple sites of these islands' identities such as history, environmental concerns and governance systems, this book provides a historical perspective into the relations between islands and the larger geopolitical regions around them, as well as historicizing 'insularist' rhetoric deployed by pro-independence groups within them. Paci examines the changing role and increasing political importance of islands in the European Union against the history of island insularity and offers a significant contribution to the wider field of island studies.
