Book Synopsis Heinrich Böll and Ireland by : Gisela Holfter
Download or read book Heinrich Böll and Ireland written by Gisela Holfter and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobel Prize winning author Heinrich Böll’s Irisches Tagebuch (Irish Journal) which was first published in 1957, has been read by millions of German readers and has had an unsurpassed impact on the German image of Ireland. But there is much more to Heinrich Böll’s relationship with Ireland than the Irisches Tagebuch. In this new book, Böll scholar Gisela Holfter carefully charts Heinrich Böll’s personal and literary connections with Ireland and Irish literature from his reading Irish fairytales in early childhood, to establishing a second home on Achill Island and his and his wife Annemarie’s translations of numerous books by Irish authors such as Brendan Behan, J. M. Synge, G. B. Shaw, Flann O’Brien and Tomás O’Crohan. This book also examines the response in Ireland to Böll’s works, notably the controversy that ensued following the broadcast of his film Irland und seine Kinder (Children of Eire) in the 1960s. Heinrich Böll and Ireland offers new insights for students, academics and the general reader alike.
Book Synopsis Kinderleben, oder, Das Märchen ohne Ende by : Friedrich Wilhelm Carové
Download or read book Kinderleben, oder, Das Märchen ohne Ende written by Friedrich Wilhelm Carové and published by Camden House. This book was released on 1995 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating analysis of one of the most popular children's works of all time. Kinderleben oder das Mährchen ohne Ende (1830) is a unique product of late German Romanticism. As a Kunstmärchen or 'artificial' fairy tale (as opposed to the more 'authentic' tales collected by the Grimm brothers, for example) it combines aspects of the traditional fairy tale with philosophical ideals, particularly those of idealism. Although only one edition ever appeared in Germany, it enjoyed wide popularity in England and the United States as The Story Without an End (1834), adapted by the foremost English translator of the period, Sarah Austin, on whom much critical attention has recently been focused. This new edition of text and translation includes a valuablecommentary with notes on the nine illustrators and a list of all previous editions of the work.
Book Synopsis Victorian Women and the Economies of Travel, Translation and Culture, 1830–1870 by : Judith Johnston
Download or read book Victorian Women and the Economies of Travel, Translation and Culture, 1830–1870 written by Judith Johnston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both travel and translation involve a type of journey, one with literal and metaphorical dimensions. Judith Johnston brings together these two richly resonant modes of getting from here to there as she explores their impact on culture with respect to the work of Victorian women. Using the metaphor of the published journey, whether it involves actual travel or translation, Johnston focusses particularly on the relationships of various British women with continental Europe. At the same time, she sheds light on the possibility of appropriation and British imperial enhancement that such contact produces. Johnston's book is in part devoted to case studies of women such as Sarah Austin, Mary Busk, Anna Jameson, Charlotte Guest, Jane Sinnett and Mary Howitt who are representative of women travellers, translators and journalists during a period when women became increasingly robust participants in the publishing industry. Whether they wrote about their own travels or translated the foreign language texts of other writers, Johnston shows, women were establishing themselves as actors in the broad business of culture. In widening our understanding of the ways in which gender and modernity functioned in the early decades of the Victorian age, Johnston's book makes a strong case for a greater appreciation of the contributions nineteenth-century women made to what is termed the knowledge empire.
