Book excerpt: Although tobacco is a legal substance, many governments around the world have introduced legislation to restrict smoking and access to tobacco products. Smokefree critically examines these changes, from the increasing numbers of places being designated as ‘smokefree’ to changes in cigarette packaging and the portrayal of smoking in popular culture. Unlike existing texts, this book neither advances a public health agenda nor condemns the erosion of individual rights. Instead, Simone Dennis takes a classical anthropological approach to present the first agenda-free, full-length study of smoking. Observing and analysing smoking practices and environments, she investigates how the social, moral, political and legal atmosphere of ‘smokefree’ came into being and examines the ideas about smoke, air, the senses, space, and time which underlie it. Looking at the impact on public space and individuals, she reveals broader findings about the relationship between the state, agents, and what is seen to constitute ‘the public’. Enriched with ethnographic vignettes from the author’s ten years of fieldwork in Australia, Smokefree is a challenging, important book which demands to be read and discussed by anyone with an interest in anthropology, sociology, political science, human geography, and public health.

Book excerpt: On a U.S. military base near Fallujah in war-torn Iraq, Col. John Folsom woke up one morning to the sound of a small, scruffy donkey tied up outside his quarters. He was charmed by this scrawny animal with a plaintive expression. Folsom and his fellow Marines took in the donkey, built him a corral and shelter, and escorted him on daily walks. One night, hanging out with the Marines as they relaxed after work, the donkey snatched someone’s lit cigarette and gobbled it up, to the laughter of all. Suddenly, the donkey had a name: Smoke. More than a conversation topic for troops connecting with families back home, Smoke served as mascot, ambassador, and battle buddy. Smoke the Donkey recounts the strong friendship between Colonel Folsom and this stray donkey and the massive challenges of reuniting Smoke with Folsom in the United States following Folsom’s retirement. After being given to a local sheik, Smoke wandered the desert before Folsom rallied an international team to take him on a convoluted journey to his new home. The team won a protracted bureaucratic battle to move Smoke from Iraq to Turkey, only to face a tougher fight getting him out of Turkey. Once in the States, Smoke became a beloved therapy animal for both children and veterans. Smoke’s story, while tinged with sadness, speaks to the enduring bond between a man and an animal, unbroken by war, distance, or red tape.

Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Complex, Intelligent, and Software Intensive Systems (CISIS-2017), held on June 28–June 30, 2017 in Torino, Italy. Software Intensive Systems are characterized by their intensive interaction with other systems, sensors, actuators, devices, and users. Further, they are now being used in more and more domains, e.g. the automotive sector, telecommunication systems, embedded systems in general, industrial automation systems and business applications. Moreover, the outcome of web services delivers a new platform for enabling software intensive systems. Complex Systems research is focused on the understanding of a system as a whole rather than its components. Complex Systems are very much shaped by the changing environments in which they operate, and by their multiple internal and external interactions. They evolve and adapt through internal and external dynamic interactions. The development of Intelligent Systems and agents, which invariably involves the use of ontologies and their logical foundations, offers a fruitful impulse for both Software Intensive Systems and Complex Systems. Recent research in the fields of intelligent systems, robotics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and cognitive sciences is essential to the future development of and innovations in software intensive and complex systems. The aim of the volume “Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems” is to provide a platform of scientific interaction between the three interwoven and challenging areas of research and development of future Information and Communications Technology (ICT)-enabled applications: Software Intensive Systems, Complex systems and Intelligent Systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us is, to a certain extent, dangerous to his or her own health, but how far do we want the government to curb our freedom to be "foolish"? In a look at such highly charged health issues as smoking, alcohol, road safety, and AIDS, Howard Leichter analyzes the efforts of the United States and Great Britain to confront the seemingly constant tension involved with this question. Leichter contends that both governments are now paying less attention to providing access to health care and more to forcing or encouraging people to change their behavior. The result has been a transformation of health politics from a largely consensual to a largely conflictual enterprise: health promotion policies often provoke debate on issues filled with scientific uncertainties, while taking on the quality of a disagreeable moral crusade. A primary concern of this book is to account for the differences, as well as the similarities, between the two countries in their public health policies. Leichter examines, for example, why seat belt regulation flourished in the American states even when federal action was blocked while, in Britain's more concentrated political structure, similar regulation faced a tortuous political path through the Lords and Commons. Finding that the United States is more apt to use formal regulation and that Britain tends toward voluntary agreement, Leichter compares the two approaches. Neither government avoids conflict, he maintains, but regulation, despite its problems, is more effective. Originally published in 1991. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The glory of the LORD," a phrase used over one hundred times in the Bible, describes God's greatness and transcendence. This complex theological concept exhibits several natural elements which describe a theophany, a personification of God in the forces of nature. Thus, a theophany--the appearance of God in a visible form--is the physical manifestation of the divine presence most frequently associated with a storm. Of all the biblical accounts that illustrate the glory of the LORD, the narrative of Moses' encounter with God on Mount Sinai (Horeb) contains nineteen of the twenty-one elements that reveal the glory of the LORD: mountains, sacred numbers, God's voice, people's (person's) response, cloud, water, thunder, lightning, trumpet blast, smoke, fire, earthquake, terms of the event (covenant), sign, transformation of witnesses, altar, feast (meal), wind, light and darkness, jewels (precious stones), and dreams. Each element is examined closely using biblical texts that best illustrate it.

Book excerpt: When American golfer Barry Vinson turns up dead at the British Open, golf writer John Morris and his companion, Julia Sullivan, search for clues, but when an antique golf ball is stuffed down a second murder victim's throat, they uncover a bizarre mystery as old as the game itself. Vinson could pulverize his tee shots and dazzle with his short game. But when it came to personality, the brilliant young American was strictly a duffer -- until someone took him off the course. With an antique golf ball -- a 'feathery' -- stuffed down his throat. For sportswriter John Morris and the high-spirited Julia Sullivan, it is nearly a matter of even par ... until that second savage murder is committed. Now, through all the pomp and cutthroat competition of the British Open, Morris and Sullivan desperately try to solve the bizarre mystery, taking them back through the history of Scotland itself, where golf and bloody murder are all just part of the game. Published previously in paperback by Dell, this Morris & Sullivan Mystery is at last digitally available from QP Books -- an authorized and unabridged republication, and part of the complete, acclaimed series by master mystery writer John Logue.

Amish teen Joseph Hochstetler is taken into captivity by Native Americans during the French and Indian War. Initially he resists the Indians’ attempts to help him adapt to their ways—their food, games, and relaxed pace of life. In this story of forbidden love, Joseph finds himself pressed between his unfolding romance with a young Indian woman and the tug of his heritage. His eyes newly opened to the wrongs committed by the white settlers, Joseph determines never to go back to his Amish community. But the encroaching British army soon forces the Indians to give up their captives under threat of death. Based on actual events, Joseph’s Dilemma traces the wrenching dilemma of a young man caught between his Amish past, his love for a woman, and an unknown future. Continues the story started in Jacob’s Choice. Free downloadable study guide available here.
