This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in Bavaria, An Old Shrew, a Tortured Soul, and Everyday Angels is the story of a bitter feud between Olga, a tough and nasty octogenarian, and Agnes, the antiauthoritarian mother of three teen-age delinquents. Olga has perfected the art of manipulating and using people. A thorn in the side to many, she gets flak only from Agnes who has nothing to lose. While Olga practices being a flower thief, Agnes slides into alcoholism. The big clash comes when Olga puts a stop to Agnes's newly found calling, and Agnes counters with a spectacular fire. Out of the blue, three murders are committed. Who could be responsible? Olga, Agnes, or someone else altogether? Both Olga and Agnes prematurely lose their lives, largely due to their errant ways. They might have lived longer, had they accepted the support so freely and readily given by Olga's four wonderful neighbors; Sister Maria, a Catholic lay sister born in Turkey; Zora, a lovable Gypsy; her friend Adi; and others in their close-knit community. While An Old Shrew, a Tortured Soul, and Everyday Angels is first and foremost a work of fiction, it touches upon the fate of the countless displaced persons and foreign worker families who found a new life in Germany after World War II.

Book Synopsis Holy Spirit and Religious Experience in Christian Literature ca. AD 90-200 by : John Eifion Morgan-Wynne
Download or read book Holy Spirit and Religious Experience in Christian Literature ca. AD 90-200 written by John Eifion Morgan-Wynne and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Holy Spirit and Religious Experience' seeks to find out how far the centrality of the Holy Spirit in Christian experience during the earliest period of the church was maintained or diminished in the third to the fifth generations (ca. AD 90-200). Three themes are explored. First, the sense of encounter with the divine presence, the numinous, a sense of being caught up into the divine being or being overwhelmed by the One who is beyond us. Secondly, a sense of being illuminated in respect to the truth, given deeper understanding of God's purpose, whether for the individual or the congregation, or guided in decision-making. Thirdly, a sense of ethical empowerment, an awareness of being helped by divine power, assisted in a course of action or development of character, in grappling with temptation, or in the ultimate test of loyalty, martyrdom. This book is arranged geographically, from Syria and Asia Minor in the East to Rome and Gaul in the West, including North Africa and Egypt. Christian authors within these areas are examined chronologically, from the later New Testament writers through the second century to Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian of Carthage, for the evidence they supply. The variegated picture which emerges, it is contended, reflects second-century Christianity.

Book excerpt: Back in the car and heading to Joe’s place, Joe noticed a Bible sitting between them in the seat. Grace detected his glance: “Do you read the Good Book often?” she asked Joe. “No ma’am; not since I was a little boy,” Joe replied through a yawn. “Well, if you don’t have one you can have mine,” she told him with a cheery grin. Joe was bemused. “No, that’s okay. I have one. My mom got it for me when I was six years old.” Grace looked at him. “And you still have it? That’s amazing.” Joe didn’t understand what was so amazing about it. “It’s in a box somewhere.” They were pulling into the apartment complex as Grace said, “I learn something new about God every time I read the Word.” Undoing his seatbelt Joe mumbled, “I know all I need to know about God.” Joe Morgan wakes up from nightmares about the day in church when he was ten years old and the pastor yelled about a sin that can’t be forgiven. Since then, he has left the idea of God far behind, much more concerned with taking care of his self than with running after a Being who damns His creatures to hell. Joe lives the small town life, going to the same bar after work every week with his friend Ray and holding back his feelings for his coworker, Nicole. He’s too caught up in the relationship they already have to risk pushing it into romance. What Joe doesn’t know is that everything is about to change—what he thinks about Nicole, about himself and most of all, about God. How can a stolen truck and two men in the hospital change Joe’s humdrum life? Read Tortured Soul to find out.
