Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of torsion-free modules over an arbitrary integral domain arises naturally as a generalization of torsion-free abelian groups. In this volume, Eben Matlis brings together his research on torsion-free modules that has appeared in a number of mathematical journals. Professor Matlis has reworked many of the proofs so that only an elementary knowledge of homological algebra and commutative ring theory is necessary for an understanding of the theory. The first eight chapters of the book are a general introduction to the theory of torsion-free modules. This part of the book is suitable for a self-contained basic course on the subject. More specialized problems of finding all integrally closed D-rings are examined in the last seven chapters, where material covered in the first eight chapters is applied. An integral domain is said to be a D-ring if every torsion-free module of finite rank decomposes into a direct sum of modules of rank 1. After much investigation, Professor Matlis found that an integrally closed domain is a D-ring if, and only if, it is the intersection of at most two maximal valuation rings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, much research work was conducted to improve ship structure analysis and design. Most of the efforts were directed to improve the strength of hull girder and to use the method of finite element analysis more efficiently and effectively. Because of the high degree of complexity of ship structures the interaction between hull girder strength and local strength require special attention. The complex system of stresses could produce unacceptable deformations and high values of equivalent stresses. This book covers an area of ship structure analysis and design that has not been exhaustively covered by other books on ship structures in a simple form. It presents the basic concepts of the methods and procedures required to calculate torsion and shear stresses in ship structures. Moreover, it is enhanced with a set of some solved and unsolved problems, very useful for students of naval and marine engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The differential equations and boundary conditions appropriate to the analysis of torsional vibrations of hollow thin-walled cylindrical beams are presented. General solutions for the modes and frequencies of cantilever and free-free cylindrical beams of arbitrary doubly symmetrical cross section with uniform wall thickness derived. Numerical calculations for beams of rectangular cross section are used to determine the influence on torsional vibrations of bending stresses due to torsion and a longitudinal inertia. The inclusion of longitudinal inertia exposes a strong coupling of the torsional vibration with longitudinal vibrations at low plan-form aspect ratios, and some of the frequencies obtained are seen to be actually associated with modes of primarily longitudinal vibration. The solution for cylinders of rectangular cross section is also used to investigate the the accuracy of a solution obtained from an analysis of an equivalent four-flange box beam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexural-Torsional Buckling of Structures provides an up-to-date, comprehensive treatment of flexural-torsional buckling and demonstrates how to design against this mode of failure. The author first explains the fundamentals of this type of buckling behavior and then summarizes results that will be of use to designers and researchers in either equation or graphical form. This approach makes the book an ideal text/reference for students in structural engineering as well as for practicing civil engineers, structural engineers, and constructional steel researchers and designers. The book begins by introducing the modern development of the theory of flexural-torsional buckling through discussions on the general concepts of equilibrium, total potential, virtual work, and buckling. It then continues with in-depth coverage of hand methods for solving buckling problems, the analysis of flexural-torsional buckling using the finite element method, and the buckling of different types of structural elements and frames composed of various elastic materials. Other topics addressed include the design and inelastic buckling of steel members. The book's final chapter considers a collection of special topics.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long thin-walled cylinders of open section (STEM type booms) have been used on many satellites either for experimentation or Gravity Gradient stabilization. Equations for the coupled transverse plus torsional oscillations of a long open section cylinder in direct sunlight are derived. Numerical results show that unstable thermally induced oscillations can be excited solely by the impinging thermal energy of the sun. It is shown that this is a direct result of the boom's extreme weakness in torsion. By literally zippering the boom's open section, to increase its torsional rigidity, the problem can be eliminated. Flight data from OGO IV, V, VI and RAE are cited to support the theoretical findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive textbook focuses on the torsion in thin walled structures, highlights the nuances of the problems faced and succinctly discusses warping, bimoment, etc. Since in several thin walled structures, torsion is the only or dominant loading, this book addresses such unique structures as well. It provides a concise explanation of the warping properties and how they are evaluated. Thin walled structures with torsion as the preponderant loading are then treated using classical and finite element methods. No prior knowledge of the finite element method is required as the method is introduced from the basics. The same problem is worked out by both approaches so that the concepts are clearly understood by the readers. The book includes pedagogical features such as end-of-chapter questions and worked out examples to augment learning and self-testing. The book will be useful for graduate courses as well as for professional development coursework for structural engineers in the aerospace, mechanical, and civil engineering domains.
