Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New Orleans to New York, from London to Paris to Venice, many of the world's great cities were built on wetlands and swamps. Cities and Wetlands is the first book to explore the literary and cultural histories of these cities and their relationships to their environments and buried histories. Developing a ground-breaking new mode of psychoanalytic ecology and surveying a wide range of major cities in North America and Europe, ecocritic and activist Rod Giblett shows how the wetland origins of these cities haunt their later literature and culture and might prompt us to reconsider the relationship between human culture and the environment. Cities covered include: Berlin, Boston, Chicago, Hamburg, London, New Orleans, New York, Paris, St. Petersburg, Toronto, Venice and Washington.

Book excerpt: Mapping and Charting for the Lion and the Lily: Map and Atlas Production in Early Modern England and France is a comparative study of the production and role of maps, charts, and atlases in early modern England and France, with a particular focus on Paris, the cartographic center of production from the late seventeenth century to the late eighteenth century, and London, which began to emerge (in the late eighteenth century) to eclipse the once favored Bourbon center. The themes that carry through the work address the role of government in map and chart making. In France, in particular, it is the importance of the centralized government and its support for geographic works and their makers through a broad and deep institutional infrastructure. Prior to the late eighteenth century in England, there was no central controlling agency or institution for map, chart, or atlas production, and any official power was imposed through the market rather than through the establishment of institutions. There was no centralized support for the cartographic enterprise and any effort by the crown was often challenged by the power of Parliament which saw little value in fostering or supporting scholar-geographers or a national survey. This book begins with an investigation of the imagery of power on map and atlas frontispieces from the late sixteenth century to the seventeenth century. In the succeeding chapters the focus moves from county and regional mapping efforts in England and France to the “paper wars” over encroachment in their respective colonial interests. The final study looks at charting efforts and highlights the role of government support and the commercial trade in the development of maritime charts not only for the home waters of the English Channel, but the distant and dangerous seas of the East Indies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man in Letters to my Grandchildren and Other Friends Anyone who studies contemporary history, business and management or aspires to succeed in life without selling out on their values and dreams should read this book. In Volume III Keith and Claire Norman continue the unabridged account of their lives, which takes the reader through the 1980’s. At this stage, Keith is approaching 60, not many would call themselves ‘young’, ‘brave’, and ‘adventurous’. In fact, the majority of us would probably have started thinking of retirement and check on the state of their pension funds. Well, not Keith! Keith met Claire, the love of his life, in 1979 and from then on this remarkable duo became an example of business acumen, tenacity and selfless devotion to any task they undertook. Not everything they touched turned to gold. Quite literally, it was gold that escaped. But this set back was a prelude to incredible achievements on the international stage, as well as in their personal businesses. From the freezing temperatures of Northern Canada and the heat and humidity of Guyana’s rainforest, infested with sand flies, snakes and roaming jaguars, to the high powered corridors of the IFC, the United Nations, and the exclusive members’ clubs of New York, Washington and London, they tirelessly embraced the thrills and adversity which are the bed fellows of entrepreneurs. Accepting the status quo would never get Keith where he wanted to be, but knowing which of the rules to bend or having an iron clad sense of fairness and integrity resulted in Keith receiving letters of commendation from the head of the IFC and the appreciation of many political and noted business figures of the day. Volume III culminates on a personal note with a description of their wedding that would make everyone wish they had shared in the celebrations... and everyone who was there were truly blessed by the occasion. This volume takes us through the intricacies of risky business undertakings, across continents and into the world of high finance and political intrigue and leaves us hungry for more. Keith and Claire write about their lives and work with such candour, dignity and humour that no-one should be left indifferent and is certain to remain curious as to what happens next. Few might guess, but there is still more to come, since for Keith and Claire, life is only just beginning!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remapping Biology with Goethe, Schelling, and Herder recruits a Romantic philosophy of biology into contemporary debates to both integrate the theoretical implications of ecology, evolution, and development, and to contextualize the successes of the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis’s gene’s-eye-view of biology. The dominant philosophy of biology in the twentieth century was one developed within and for the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis. As biologists like those developing an Extended Evolutionary Synthesis have pushed the limits of this paradigm, fresh philosophical approaches have become necessary. This book makes the case that an organicism developed by the 19th century figures Goethe, Schelling, and Herder offers surprising resources to navigate the contemporary biological and evolutionary terrain. This “metamorphic organicism” resonates with present trends in biological theory that emphasize process, organismal dynamics, ecology, and agency. It also proposes strategies for reintegrating reductive and mechanistic maps of biology, like those of the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis, into richer theoretical representations of life. Drawing from cutting-edge biology, Romantic history, and perspectival pluralist literatures, this integrated history-and-philosophy-of-biology will be of interest to students and scholars interested in the genesis of current theoretical tensions in evolutionary biology, and to those seeking constructive ways to resolve those tensions, including practicing biologists and educators.
