Book excerpt: Excerpt from Torchbearers of Christendom: The Light They Shed and the Shadows They Cast This book has been written for young people, and for older folks who love the Church but do not know much about it. It is an attempt to construct an historic framework which shall be at once simple and attractive. The scholarly reader will, I trust, see signs of painstaking effort for accuracy. But my prime endeavor has been to make the course of events in Christendom easily understandable, and so entertaining that an abiding taste for Church history may be begotten in many. I have always admired the grace of the Frenchman who said of his book, "Mine is the string on which these pearls are strung." But while threading my borrowed pearls I have found that even my string is partly spliced out with others choice ravelings. To Dr. Matheson's masterly essay on The Originality of Christ I am largely indebted for the presentation of our Lord's ideal of life. Book excerpt: Like the Olympic torchbearers, Christians are also called to pass a torch from generation to generation. The light of biblical Christianity shines in the world today because faithful believers through the ages dedicated themselves to the accurate transfer of doctrine to new Christians and then equipped them to live out this truth. This is our legacy, our calling in Christ, and the best inheritance we can leave our children. There is no greater privilege or honor in life than to be a torchbearer for Christ.
Download or read book Torchbearers written by Stephen Gorham and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-12 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his second letter to Timothy, the Apostle Paul tells him that he has "finished the race." He is now passing the torch to Timothy who must now run with it. The history of the church is filled with those who have borne the torch before us and there is a lot that we can learn from them. In many ways, the church's history is like one very long relay race. In this book, Stephen Gorham highlights twenty-five "torchbearers" who have run the race well including William Wilberforce, John Hus, St. Vincent de Paul and King Alfred the Great. These men and women of faith come from all walks of life. There is the monk Telemachus who put a stop to the gladiatorial games and the hospital reformer Florence Nightingale known as the "Lady with the Lamp." The book also includes those who have been martyred for the faith including Lawrence of Rome, Jim Elliot and Bishop Shi. What they all have in common is a deep abiding faith in God and the grace and courage to put that faith into action. It is the author's hope and prayer that the reader will be inspired by these men and women of faith to run their portion of the race well and one day like the Apostle Paul be rewarded with the "crown of life" for doing so.
