Book excerpt: The Documentary Hypothesis, which in the 20th century was the standard theory to explain the development of the Pentateuch, has been challenged from different angles. One important text corpus where new proposals have been brought into the debate is the Book of Numbers. The articles in this volume address the formation of the Book of Numbers from the earliest to the latest strata. They focus on topics like the source-source critical placement of the texts in Deuteronomy that retell events from Numbers and the status of the late priestly legal additions and their relation to prior texts of the Torah. Special attention is given to the composition of the final text of the Book of Numbers and its understanding of law and narrative. The authors of this volume partially contributed to a symposium on the topic "Torah in the Book of Numbers" at the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum, held on April 12-13, 2011.
Book Synopsis Torah Praxis after 70 CE by : Isaac Wilk Oliver
Download or read book Torah Praxis after 70 CE written by Isaac Wilk Oliver and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Torah Praxis after 70 CE, Oliver challenges conventional views of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke as well as the Acts of the Apostles. He reads the works not only against their Jewish “background” but also as early Jewish literature. In doing so, he questions the traditional classification of Luke-Acts as a “Greek” or Gentile-Christian text. To support his assertions, Dr. Oliver’s literary-historical investigation explores the question of Torah praxis in each book, citing evidence that suggests several ritual Jewish practices remained fixtures in the Jesus movement and that Jewish followers of Jesus played key roles in forming the ekklesia well into the first century CE.
Book Synopsis In the Beginning by : David S. Bradford
Download or read book In the Beginning written by David S. Bradford and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation account that begins the Old Testament exhibits conspicuous structures that have intrigued scholars, theologians and casual readers alike. A typical response is to merely acknowledge the author’s clever use of poetic devices. But is this an adequate explanation and response? Or could the mystifying surface text be an invitation to seek a deeper message hiding in plain-sight? In fact, the start of Genesis contains enough clues to help us de-code its hidden content. And that same content is, among other things, a tiny seed which has determined the blossoming of the whole Bible. Finding the cryptic content in the Hebrew Torah is like bringing a magic-lantern into proper focus. Suddenly, it becomes obvious why widely separated biblical episodes came about. All at once, hitherto obscure passages are brought into the limelight. Mysterious prophesies and apparent contradictions in books like Ezekiel and Revelation, Ezra and Nehemiah finally make perfect sense, but in surprising ways. And all this from one strategically-placed, incredibly compact literary artefact. The prophets are not alone in having found the key to the hidden mysteries. The same phenomenon also illuminates both the rise and final demise of the enigmatic Knights Templar. In due course, the same seed became misrepresented in popular myths and legends, as well as shaping the symbolism of particular secret societies. Perhaps the most surprising attribute of the creation account is that it does, after all, conceal descriptions of the way our physical universe works, even from its remotest beginning. Includes over 80 original illustrations.
Book Synopsis The Berlin Jewish Community by : Steven M. Lowenstein
Download or read book The Berlin Jewish Community written by Steven M. Lowenstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-06-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Berlin Jewish community was both the pioneer in intellectual modernization and the first to experience a crisis of modernity. This original and imaginative book connects intellectual and political transformation with the social structures and daily activities of the Jewish community. Steven M. Lowenstein has used extraordinarily rich documentation about the life of Berlin Jewry in the period and assembled a collective biography of the entire community of Berlin Jews. He has examined tax lists, subscription lists, genealogical records, and address lists as well as kosher meat accounts to give us a vivid picture of daily life. On another level in detailing the complexity of Jewish life in Berlin during this period, this book illuminates the connections between the "peaceful stage" of enlightenment and the crisis that followed.

Book Synopsis Memoirs of a Grandmother by : Pauline Wengeroff
Download or read book Memoirs of a Grandmother written by Pauline Wengeroff and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pauline Wengeroff, the only nineteenth-century Russian Jewish woman to publish a memoir, sets out to illuminate the "cultural history of the Jews of Russia" in the period of Jewish "enlightenment," when traditional culture began to disintegrate and Jews became modern. Wengeroff, a gifted writer and astute social observer, paints a rich portrait of both traditional and modernizing Jewish societies in an extraordinary way, focusing on women and the family and offering a gendered account (and indictment) of assimilation. In Volume 1 of Memoirs of a Grandmother, Wengeroff depicts traditional Jewish society, including the religious culture of women, during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I, who wished "his" Jews to be acculturated to modern Russian life.
Book Synopsis The Paleo Manifesto by : John Durant
Download or read book The Paleo Manifesto written by John Durant and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Paleo Manifesto: Ancient Wisdom for Lifelong Health, John Durant argues for an evolutionary – and revolutionary – approach to health. All animals, human or otherwise, thrive when they mimic key elements of life in their natural habitat. From diet to movement to sleep, this evolutionary perspective sheds light on some of our most pressing health concerns. What is causing the rise of chronic conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, and depression? Is eating red meat going to kill you? Is avoiding the sun actually the best way to avoid skin cancer? Durant takes readers on a thrilling ride to the Paleolithic and beyond, unlocking the health secrets of our ancient ancestors. What do obese gorillas teach us about weight loss? How can Paleolithic skulls contain beautiful sets of teeth? Why is the Bible so obsessed with hygiene? What do NASA astronauts teach us about getting a good night’s sleep? And how are Silicon Valley techies hacking the human body? Blending science and culture, anthropology and philosophy, John Durant distills the lessons from his adventures and shows how to apply them to day-to-day life, teaching people how to construct their own personal “habitat” that will enable them to thrive. The book doesn’t just address what we eat, but why we eat it; not just how to exercise, but the purpose of functional movement; not just being healthy, but leading a purposeful life. Combining the best of ancient wisdom with cutting edge science, Durant crafts a vision of health that is both fresh and futuristic.
Download or read book The Court Jew written by Selma Stern and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of court absolutism and early capitalism extended from the end of the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. A new world view was created, along with a new type of individual possessing new economic orientations to the marketplace and new social attitudes deriving from such concerns. The unified political and religious world of medieval Europe broke into parts: national differentiation and religious options abounded. The autonomy of the nation-state created a need for new attitudes toward religious minorities, even despised ones such as the Jews. The court Jew phenomenon, as Selma Stern details, was inextricably linked to these larger developments, including the emancipation of Jews as a whole. Dr. Stern's work is an effort to reconstruct this unusual group of Jews who became politically and economically influential and through that mechanism were able to enhance Jewish community life as a whole. In his very existence the court Jew necessarily enlarged, beyond its original meaning, the concept of free expression in European societies. As the dominating idea of defending one church and one emperor collapsed under the weight of the new European system of power balances, a new conception of the Jew developed, one of a transforming agent in economic and political positions. With trade no longer condemned as sinful, collecting interest for loans no longer prohibited, and the merchant no longe'r compared to a thief, the Jewish money changer and tradesman came to be viewed in a more favorable light. In this new environment, the claims of Christianity remained supreme, but the rights of religious minorities were considered. At the time of the book's initial appearance, the Saturday Review hailed it as a "picturesque work giving evidence of great writing talent." The reviewer went on to note that "Dr. Stern's work provided exhaustive historical background of European Jewryâfrom 1650 to 1750âthat period during which the modern European genius emerged." Dr. Stern's work relies heavily upon European archives up to 1938, when the advances of Nazism made further work impossible. As a result, what was started in Europe was completed in America.
