Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Topology of Biopolymers, held from April 21–22, 2018, at Northeastern University, Boston, MA. The papers cover recent results on the topology and geometry of DNA and protein knotting using techniques from knot theory, spatial graph theory, differential geometry, molecular simulations, and laboratory experimentation. They include current work on the following topics: the density and supercoiling of DNA minicircles; the dependence of DNA geometry on its amino acid sequence; random models of DNA knotting; topological models of DNA replication and recombination; theories of how and why proteins knot; topological and geometric approaches to identifying entanglements in proteins; and topological and geometric techniques to predict protein folding rates. All of the articles are written as surveys intended for a broad interdisciplinary audience with a minimum of prerequisites. In addition to being a useful reference for experts, this book also provides an excellent introduction to the fast-moving field of topology and geometry of biopolymers.

A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE The revolutionary progress in molecular biology within the last 30 years opens the way to full understanding of the molecular structures and mech anisms of living organisms. Interdisciplinary research in mathematics and molecular biology is driven by ever growing experimental, theoretical and computational power. The mathematical sciences accompany and support much of the progress achieved by experiment and computation as well as provide insight into geometric and topological properties of biomolecular structure and processes. This volume consists of a representative sample of the papers presented during the last two weeks of the month-long Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications Summer 1994 Program in Molecular Biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop and 18th International Conference on Representations of Algebras (ICRA 2018) held from August 8–17, 2018, in Prague, Czech Republic. It presents several themes of contemporary representation theory together with some new tools, such as stable ∞ ∞-categories, stable derivators, and contramodules. In the first part, expanded lecture notes of four courses delivered at the workshop are presented, covering the representation theory of finite sets with correspondences, geometric theory of quiver Grassmannians, recent applications of contramodules to tilting theory, as well as symmetries in the representation theory over an abstract stable homotopy theory. The second part consists of six more-advanced papers based on plenary talks of the conference, presenting selected topics from contemporary representation theory: recollements and purity, maximal green sequences, cohomological Hall algebras, Hochschild cohomology of associative algebras, cohomology of local selfinjective algebras, and the higher Auslander–Reiten theory studied via homotopy theory.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Summer School on Identification and Control: some challenges, held from June 18–20, 2019, in Monastir, Tunisia. The articles cover new developments in control theory and inverse problems. First, the problem of Calderón, which consists of determining a conductivity appearing in an elliptic equation from excitation and measurements on a part of the boundary of the domain, is studied. Second, an introduction to the mathematical analysis of inverse spectral problems of Borg-Levinson type is presented. Third, the control of multi-component systems of wave equations, focusing on the notion of simultaneous control (using the same control scheme in all components of the system at hand) and indirect control (using a single control for a system consisting of two components), is presented. Last, the study of the cost of control for parabolic systems, the finite time stabilization of hyperbolic control systems by boundary feedback laws, and image reconstruction by data assimilation are addressed.

Book excerpt: The year 2018 marked the 75th anniversary of the founding of Mathematics of Computation, one of the four primary research journals published by the American Mathematical Society and the oldest research journal devoted to computational mathematics. To celebrate this milestone, the symposium “Celebrating 75 Years of Mathematics of Computation” was held from November 1–3, 2018, at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), Providence, Rhode Island. The sixteen papers in this volume, written by the symposium speakers and editors of the journal, include both survey articles and new contributions. On the discrete side, there are four papers covering topics in computational number theory and computational algebra. On the continuous side, there are twelve papers covering topics in machine learning, high dimensional approximations, nonlocal and fractional elliptic problems, gradient flows, hyperbolic conservation laws, Maxwell's equations, Stokes's equations, a posteriori error estimation, and iterative methods. Together they provide a snapshot of significant achievements in the past quarter century in computational mathematics and also in important current trends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borel's Conjecture entered the mathematics arena in 1919 as an innocuous remark about sets of real numbers in the context of a new covering property introduced by Émile Borel. In the 100 years since, this conjecture has led to a remarkably rich adventure of discovery in mathematics, producing independent results and the discovery of countable support iterated forcing, developments in infinitary game theory, deep connections with infinitary Ramsey Theory, and significant impact on the study of topological groups and topological covering properties. The papers in this volume present a broad introduction to the frontiers of research that has been spurred on by Borel's 1919 conjecture and identify fundamental unanswered research problems in the field. Philosophers of science and historians of mathematics can glean from this collection some of the typical trends in the discovery, innovation, and development of mathematical theories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of research surveys on the Distance Geometry Problem (DGP) and its applications. It will be divided into three parts: Theory, Methods and Applications. Each part will contain at least one survey and several research papers. The first part, Theory, will deal with theoretical aspects of the DGP, including a new class of problems and the study of its complexities as well as the relation between DGP and other related topics, such as: distance matrix theory, Euclidean distance matrix completion problem, multispherical structure of distance matrices, distance geometry and geometric algebra, algebraic distance geometry theory, visualization of K-dimensional structures in the plane, graph rigidity, and theory of discretizable DGP: symmetry and complexity. The second part, Methods, will discuss mathematical and computational properties of methods developed to the problems considered in the first chapter including continuous methods (based on Gaussian and hyperbolic smoothing, difference of convex functions, semidefinite programming, branch-and-bound), discrete methods (based on branch-and-prune, geometric build-up, graph rigidity), and also heuristics methods (based on simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, tabu search, variable neighborhood search). Applications will comprise the third part and will consider applications of DGP to NMR structure calculation, rational drug design, molecular dynamics simulations, graph drawing and sensor network localization. This volume will be the first edited book on distance geometry and applications. The editors are in correspondence with the major contributors to the field of distance geometry, including important research centers in molecular biology such as Institut Pasteur in Paris.

Book excerpt: Polymers occur in many different states and their physical properties are strongly correlated with their conformations. The theoretical investigation of the conformational properties of polymers is a difficult task and numerical methods play an important role in this field. This book contains contributions from a workshop on numerical methods for polymeric systems, held at the IMA in May 1996, which brought together chemists, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists and statisticians with a common interest in numerical methods. The two major approaches used in the field are molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods, and the book includes reviews of both approaches as well as applications to particular polymeric systems. The molecular dynamics approach solves the Newtonian equations of motion of the polymer, giving direct information about the polymer dynamics as well as about static properties. The Monte Carlo approaches discussed in this book all involve sampling along a Markov chain defined on the configuration space of the system. An important feature of the book is the treatment of Monte Carlo methods, including umbrella sampling and multiple Markov chain methods, which are useful for strongly interacting systems such as polymers at low temperatures and in compact phases. The book is of interest to workers in polymer statistical mechanics and also to a wider audience interested in numerical methods and their application in polymeric systems.
