The aim of the event was to familiarize the new generation of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows with the principles and methods of modern lattice field theory, which aims to resolve fundamental, non-perturbative questions about QCD without uncontrolled approximations. The emphasis of the book is on the theoretical developments that have shaped the field in the last two decades and that have turned lattice gauge theory into a robust approach to the determination of low energy hadronic quantities and of fundamental parameters of the Standard Model. By way of introduction, the lectures begin by covering lattice theory basics, lattice renormalization and improvement, and the many faces of chirality. A later course introduces QCD at finite temperature and density. A broad view of lattice computation from the basics to recent developments was offered in a corresponding course. Extrapolations to physical quark masses and a framework for the parameterization of the low-energy physics by means of effective coupling constants is covered in a lecture on chiral perturbation theory. Heavy-quark effective theories, an essential tool for performing the relevant lattice calculations, is covered from its basics to recent advances. A number of shorter courses round out the book and broaden its purview. These included recent applications to the nucleon—nucleon interation and a course on physics beyond the Standard Model.

Book excerpt: This primer begins with a brief introduction to the main ideas underlying Effective Field Theory (EFT) and describes how nuclear forces are obtained from first principles by introducing a Euclidean space-time lattice for chiral EFT. It subsequently develops the related technical aspects by addressing the two-nucleon problem on the lattice and clarifying how it fixes the numerical values of the low-energy constants of chiral EFT. In turn, the spherical wall method is introduced and used to show how improved lattice actions render higher-order corrections perturbative. The book also presents Monte Carlo algorithms used in actual calculations. In the last part of the book, the Euclidean time projection method is introduced and used to compute the ground-state properties of nuclei up to the mid-mass region. In this context, the construction of appropriate trial wave functions for the Euclidean time projection is discussed, as well as methods for determining the energies of the low-lying excitations and their spatial structure. In addition, the so-called adiabatic Hamiltonian, which allows nuclear reactions to be precisely calculated, is introduced using the example of alpha-alpha scattering. In closing, the book demonstrates how Nuclear Lattice EFT can be extended to studies of unphysical values of the fundamental parameters, using the triple-alpha process as a concrete example with implications for the anthropic view of the Universe. Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory offers a concise, self-contained, and introductory text suitable for self-study use by graduate students and newcomers to the field of modern computational techniques for atomic nuclei and nuclear reactions.

The aim of this set of lectures is to provide graduate students with a grounding in the application of lattice gauge theory methods to strongly interacting systems and in particular to nuclear physics. In Part 1, I investigate effective field theories and their applications in lattice gauge theory. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) as a part of the standard model (SM) describes the physics of quarks and gluons. There are several numerical and analytical methods to tackle the QCD problems. Lattice QCD is the dominant numerical method. Effective field theories, on the other hand, provide analytic methods to describe the low-energy dynamics of QCD. To use the effective theories in lattice QCD, I develop chiral perturbation theory for heavy-light mesons with staggered quarks---an implementation of fermions on lattice. I use this effective chiral theory to study the pattern of taste splitting in masses of the mesons with staggered quarks. I also calculate the leptonic decay constant of the heavy-light mesons with staggered quarks to one-loop order in the chiral expansion. The resulting chiral formula provides a suitable fit form to combine and analyze a large number of decay constants of heavy-light mesons computed from different lattice ensembles with various choices of input parameters. I perform a comprehensive chiral fit to the lattice data for D mesons computed by the MILC collaboration. Consequently, I determine the physical values of the decay constants of D mesons. These precise results place narrow restrictions on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements. In Part 2, I introduce the concept of a nonlinear eigenvalue problem by investigating three nonlinear differential equations. First, equation y'(x) = cos[[pi]xy(x)] is investigated. A discrete set of initial conditions y(0) = a[subscript n], leading to unstable separatrix behavior, are identified as the eigenvalues of the problem. I calculate the asymptotic behavior of the initial conditions a[subscript n] and their corresponding solutions for large n by reducing the equation to a linear one-dimensional random-walk problem. Second, I investigate equation y''(x) = 6[y(x)]2+x, whose solutions are called the first Painlevé transcendent. I calculate different types of critical initial conditions that give rise to separatrix solutions for this equation. I work out the asymptotic behaviors of the initial conditions by reducing the problem to a linear Schrödinger equation. Finally, I investigate the second Painlevé transcendent, corresponding to equation y''(x) = 2[y(x)]3 + xy(x). I find that this equation exhibits patterns similar to the first Painlevé equation.
