Book excerpt: Water inrush (WI) is one of the most dangerous geological disasters in underground engineering, with significant human casualties and economic losses. To prevent and control WI disasters, great efforts have been made to address WI mechanisms for more than half a century. In particular, the seepage instability theory is hitherto one of the most widely used theoretical models. This theory portrays that the seepage system will undergo structural instability when the initial values of permeability and boundary pressure meet certain conditions, which manifests that the permeability parameter is one of the most valuable indicators to unveil WI mechanisms. However, rock permeability is determined by its internal structural characteristics, which can be affected by water chemical composition, stress environment, and temperature. In this regard, it is of great necessity and importance to facilitate a better understanding of the holistic impacts of multi-field coupling on rock internal structure and deformation failure characteristics. This Research Topic aims to initiate a global forum for presenting and disseminating the latest advancements of WI mechanisms, which entails the characterization of physical and laboratory tests, 3D reconstruction of rock internal structure, numerical approaches, theoretical models under multi-field coupling, and filed date analysis methods.

This conference is dedicated to the innovations in the field of precision agriculture, robotics and machines, as well as agriculture biotechnologies and soil management. It is a collection of original and fundamental research in such areas as follows: unmanned aerial systems, satellite-based applications, proximal and remote sensing of soil and crop, positioning systems, geostatistics, mapping and spatial data analysis, robotics, and automation. Potential and prospects for the use of hydrogen in agriculture, for example, in high-performance tractors with hybrid electric transmission, are disclosed in the research works of scientists from all over the world. It also includes such topics as precision horticulture, precision crop protection, differential harvest, precision livestock farming, controlling environment in animal husbandry, and other topics. One of the important issues raised in the book is to ensure the autonomy of local farms. The topic of the impact of the agro-industrial sector on the environment also received wide coverage. Ways to reduce the burden on the environment are proposed, and the use of alternative fuels and fertilizers is suggested. The research results presented in this book cover the experience and the latest studies on the sustainable functioning of agribusiness in several climatic zones. The tundra and taiga, forest-steppe, the steppe and semi-desert—all this is a unique and incredibly demanded bank of information, the main value of which is the real experience of the functioning of agribusiness in difficult climatic and geographic conditions. These materials are of interest for professionals and practitioners, for researchers, scholars, and producers. They are used in the educational process at specific agricultural universities or during vocational training at enterprises and also become an indispensable helper to farm managers in making the best agronomic decisions.

Book excerpt: Climate Crisis, Energy Violence: Mapping Fossil Energy's Enduring Grasp on Our Precarious Future communicates the breadth and scope of fossil fuel infrastructure and its global impact. Comparative research coupled with data and maps accentuates the spatial, temporal, and physical forms of energy violence. Over 25 international case studies track the world's three primary fossil fuels—first coal, followed by oil, then gas—revealing patterns of loss and damage, as well as industrial tactics of climate delay and deception used to prolong fossil fuel harms. Through analyses of hotspots, sacrifice zones, fast vs slow violence, death prints and fuel life cycles, immediate ecological damage as well as long-term climate impacts are revealed, tied directly to fossil fuel interests. In detailing the broad scope of damage from energy extraction systems, this book provides a compelling argument to move past fossil fuels, directly confronting the climate crisis through energy justice alliances. - Examines fossil fuel infrastructure across more than 25 unique global research sites - Analyzes energy violence in a theoretical yet accessible framework grounded in ecology, ethics, and human rights - Explores collective action and energy justice alliances to move past the destructive pattern of fossil fuels
