Book excerpt: Tooth Health Beginners Guide Oral health is not solely about preventing bad breath or cavities; it is a vital aspect of maintaining the proper functioning of our entire body. Our mouth is the gateway to our body, and the state of our oral health can have significant implications for our overall health. Numerous studies have shown a strong link between oral health and various systemic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory infections, and even adverse pregnancy outcomes. One of the key reasons oral health matters is that the mouth is teeming with bacteria. While most of these bacteria are harmless, some can contribute to the development of dental issues like cavities and gum disease. Proper oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and visits to the dentist, help control the growth of harmful bacteria and prevent these issues from escalating. Beyond the physical aspect, oral health also has psychological and social dimensions. A healthy smile can boost self-confidence and improve social interactions. On the contrary, oral health problems can lead to embarrassment, reduced self-esteem, and even social isolation. This highlights the impact oral health can have on our mental and emotional well-being. The digestive process begins in the mouth, where enzymes in saliva initiate the breakdown of food. Healthy teeth enable efficient chewing, which aids in proper digestion and nutrient absorption. A healthy mouth allows us to enjoy a diverse range of foods, including fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Painful teeth or gum issues can limit food choices, potentially affecting our nutritional intake. Teeth play a crucial role in forming sounds and speech. Well-maintained teeth enable clear and effective communication, contributing to social and professional interactions. Dental problems can cause significant pain, affecting our ability to focus on daily tasks. Toothaches or discomfort can lead to disrupted sleep and reduced quality of life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, is the breakdown of teeth due to acids made by bacteria. The cavities may be a number of different colors from yellow to black. Symptoms may include pain and difficulty with eating. Complications may include inflammation of the tissue around the tooth, tooth loss, and infection or abscess formation. The cause of cavities is acid from bacteria dissolving the hard tissues of the teeth (enamel, dentin and cementum). The acid is produced by the bacteria when they break down food debris or sugar on the tooth surface. Simple sugars in food are these bacteria's primary energy source and thus a diet high in simple sugar is a risk factor. If mineral breakdown is greater than build up from sources such as saliva, caries results. Risk factors include conditions that result in less saliva such as: diabetes mellitus, Sjögren syndrome and some medications. Medications that decrease saliva production include antihistamines and antidepressants. Dental caries are also associated with poverty, poor cleaning of the mouth, and receding gums resulting in exposure of the roots of the teeth. Prevention of dental caries includes regular cleaning of the teeth, a diet low in sugar, and small amounts of fluoride. Brushing the teeth twice per day and flossing between the teeth once a day is recommended. Fluoride may be acquired from water, salt or toothpaste among other sources. Treating a mother's dental caries may decrease the risk in her children by decreasing the numbers of certain bacteria she may spread to them. Screening can result in earlier detection. Depending on the extent of destruction, various treatments can be used to restore the tooth to proper function or the tooth may be removed. There is no known method to grow back large amounts of tooth. The availability of treatment is often poor in the developing world. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen may be taken for pain. Worldwide, approximately 3.6 billion people (48% of the population) have dental caries in their permanent teeth as of 2016. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly all adults have dental caries at some point in time. In baby teeth it affects about 620 million people or 9% of the population. They have become more common in both children and adults in recent years. The disease is most common in the developed world due to greater simple sugar consumption and less common in the developing world. Caries is Latin for "rottenness".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost everyone has had a tooth filled or extracted due to a cavity. Tooth decay is a common condition, not only among children but also among adults. This oral condition is so prevalent that it is considered as the nation’s top chronic disease. Further, tooth decay is even more prevalent than asthma. Cavity prevalence is surprising considering that tooth decay is preventable. If you look at the numbers, the pervasiveness of dental cavities becomes even more startling. In a study (2011-2012) done by the National Institute for Health, together with the Center for Disease and Prevention reports that 91% of adults with age ranging from 20 to 64 have dental cavities. Further, 5% of adults with the same age range have no remaining teeth. The study also predicts that when these adults reach 65 years of age, the rate would have increased to 96%. A 2016 National Center for Health Statistics survey shows that 18.6 percent of children aged 5 to 19 and 31.6 percent of adults aged 20 to 64 have untreated dental cavities. The high percentage of children and adults with cavities should be a cause for concern. Research has shown that there is a link between oral health and general health, like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, dementia, and respiratory illnesses. Several theories have been advanced by experts in dental health which link cavities to general health. One such link is the mouth-body connection which happens to be an old theory you can trace back to the time of Hippocrates. At this point, you may wonder how tooth decay which is a preventable disease could rise to such a high level of prevalence. You may also wonder about the conditions which give rise to cavity development. The crucial question, though, is how to reverse cavities the natural way to prevent the dental problem from developing into a serious oral health condition. Table of Contents Introduction Myths about Cavities What are Cavities Risk factors of a cavity Signs and symptoms of a cavity How do cavities develop? Causes of Tooth Decay How cavities form How poor dental health affect general health Common dental diseases How dental health affects health conditions How to Reverse cavities the natural way How to Reverse cavities the natural way Step-by-step guide to reverse cavities Oil pulling Homemade remineralizing toothpaste

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cavities Gum Disease Healing Guide for Beginners Cavities, also known as dental caries or tooth decay, are areas of localized damage to the teeth caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria, acid, food particles, and poor oral hygiene. These factors lead to the demineralization of tooth enamel, the outer protective layer of the teeth, resulting in the formation of holes or cavities in the teeth. If left untreated, cavities can progress deeper into the tooth structure, potentially causing pain, infection, and even tooth loss. Gum disease, formally called periodontal disease, refers to a range of conditions that affect the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, bone, and ligaments. It typically starts with gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums characterized by redness, swelling, and bleeding during brushing or flossing. If not properly managed, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease that can lead to tooth mobility and loss due to the destruction of the bone that supports the teeth. Oral health is integral to overall well-being and quality of life. Maintaining good oral health goes beyond having a bright smile; it has implications for speech, digestion, self-esteem, and systemic health. A healthy mouth allows for proper chewing, aiding in digestion and nutrient absorption. Additionally, oral health contributes to clear speech and effective communication. Healthy teeth and gums also play a significant role in boosting self-confidence and psychological well-being. Moreover, recent research has established a strong connection between oral health and systemic health. Poor oral hygiene and untreated oral diseases have been linked to various health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and complications during pregnancy. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and contribute to inflammation and health issues in other parts of the body. This underscores the importance of maintaining optimal oral health as an essential component of overall health and wellness. GRAB YOUR COPY, TO CONTINUE READING!!!

Provides practical information and advice on topics related to dental and overall health. Have you ever visited a new dentist and been told you need a “smile makeover,” with the implication that if your teeth were whiter and straighter, you would be more successful and happier? Or maybe you’ve never had a cavity – and now, suddenly, you have a half dozen that require immediate attention. Perhaps you’ve been told you need a root canal or a crown or implant. What are all these things? Which procedure is best for your situation? Did you leave those offices thinking, “It’s not really bothering me. Do I need to get all this work done?” Nothing But the Tooth is a ready guide to dental health that answers all your questions and the ones you didn’t even know to ask. It begins with the most important question: how to choose a competent and ethical dentist – and ends with a discussion about technological advances in the dental field. Topics such as the cost of dental treatment, pediatric and geriatric dental needs, and the link between sleep apnea and your mouth are covered. Most importantly, it guides readers to a better understanding of the link between dental and overall health.
