Book excerpt: New York Times Bestselling author Peter Lerangis delivers a well-cast drama with his third installment in the Drama Club series. For the Spring production, the Drama Club decides to do something different, something meatier. So they convince Mr. Levin to let them do an independent production of a serious play—a play with issues—and raw language—and some controversy. (Just the thing to impress those college admissions boards.) When opening night comes around, the show has a piddling turnout. The audience is nearly silent, and the cast thinks it’s a flop. But the next night the place is packed. The second performance is electric. Great, right? Not exactly. A parent lodges a complaint, saying the play is inappropriate for high school. Then someone publishes a piece in the school paper that makes the rehearsal process appear to be rife with all kinds of sordid behavior. There is a huge outcry from the parents and from the school administration, and Mr. Levin is in real trouble. Now the Drama Club members have to band together to help save their advisor from being fired! "Overall, a solid and well-cast production."—School Library Journal on The Big Production

Book excerpt: Tension is building up between a quirky museum curator and a rugged contractor in this steamy romantic comedy by USA Today–bestselling author. Merry Kade has always been the good girl, the one who patiently waits for the guy to notice her. Well, no more. Merry has just scored her dream job, and it’s time for her life to change. As the new curator of a museum in Wyoming, she’ll supervise a lot of restoration work. Luckily, she’s found the perfect contractor for the job: Shane Harcourt. Shane can’t believe that someone wants to turn a beat-up ghost town into a museum attraction. After all, the last thing he needs is the site of his dream ranch turning into a tourist trap. But the beautiful, quirky woman in charge soon starts to change his mind, and while their love might be too hot to handle, it’s impossible to resist. Previously published in 2013. Praise for Too Hot to Handle “Dahl adds her signature hot sex scenes and quirky characters to this lively mix of romance in the high country.” —Too Hot to Handle

Jasper Ellis has a bad boy reputation in this town, and he loathes it. The moment he sees Rita, though, Jasper knows he's about to be sorely tempted. There's something real between them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Close, a leading physicist and talented popular science writer, reveals the true story of the cold fusion controversy--a story ignored until now in spite of the glare of publicity surrounding Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons. On March 23, 1989, these two Utah scientists held an astonishing press conference, maintaining that they had succeeded, working in secret, in harnessing atomic fusion. What was the basis for their claims to have achieved cold fusion in a test tube in a basement laboratory, while other scientists--using magnets as big as houses and temperatures hotter than those in the center of the sun--were failing to produce as much power as they were using? Why did Fleischmann and Pons proclaim their "discovery" at a news conference, when first announcements of scientific results are almost always made within the scientific community? Why did the full-blown media event inspired by their initial report cause governments to reorient their research programs in hopes of cornering the "new technology"? And why did some scientists recklessly abandon their traditional painstaking methods in haste to be first to prove or discredit the experiment? Acquainted at first hand with investigations of cold fusion on two continents, Close is uniquely qualified to probe the motivations behind Fleischmann's and Pons's startling assertions and to explore the intellectual and political turmoil that surrounded the cold fusion debate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive history of sex education around the world Too Hot to Handle is the first truly international history of sex education. As Jonathan Zimmerman shows, the controversial subject began in the West and spread steadily around the world over the past century. As people crossed borders, however, they joined hands to block sex education from most of their classrooms. Examining key players who supported and opposed the sex education movement, Zimmerman takes a close look at one of the most debated and divisive hallmarks of modern schooling. In the early 1900s, the United States pioneered sex education to protect citizens from venereal disease. But the American approach came under fire after World War II from European countries, which valued individual rights and pleasures over social goals and outcomes. In the so-called Third World, sex education developed in response to the deadly crisis of HIV/AIDS. By the early 2000s, nearly every country in the world addressed sex in its official school curriculum. Still, Zimmerman demonstrates that sex education never won a sustained foothold: parents and religious leaders rejected the subject as an intrusion on their authority, while teachers and principals worried that it would undermine their own tenuous powers. Despite the overall liberalization of sexual attitudes, opposition to sex education increased as the century unfolded. Into the present, it remains a subject without a home. Too Hot to Handle presents the stormy development and dilemmas of school-based sex education in the modern world.

Book excerpt: Scientists are clear that urgent action is needed on climate change, and world leaders agree. Yet climate issues barely trouble domestic politics. This book explores a central dilemma of the climate crisis: science demands urgency; politics turns the other cheek. Is it possible to hope for a democratic solution to climate change? Based on interviews with leading politicians and activists, and the author’s twenty years on the frontline of climate politics, this book explores why climate is such a challenge for political systems, even when policy solutions exist. It argues that more democracy, not less, is needed to tackle the climate crisis, and suggests practical ways forward.

Book excerpt: Amdo Tibetan: A Comprehensive Grammar Textbook is a rigorous one-year college-level textbook for English speakers who wish to learn the Amdo dialect of the Tibetan language. This comprehensive introduction to the language provides dialogues at the start of each new lesson to illustrate the constructions covered in that lesson. Material from previous chapters is recycled within these dialogues to reinforce learning as the lessons progress. Each chapter unpacks the opening sample dialogue and provides an in-depth analysis and technical explanations of the specific constructions presented. Cultural sections are also included in each chapter, as well as a range of exercises and drills to reinforce learning and help students internalize the new information. The book will be of particular interest to linguists and students with some knowledge of either standard colloquial or literary Tibetan.
