Smokescreen is a eye-witness account of the accident. It is targeted toward fans of car racing and people with an interest in current events involving celebrities. On August 9th, 2014 I was enjoying one of my best runs in a 360 sprint car - until directly in front of me, the unthinkable happened. Driving the race car directly behind Tony Stewart, I had a firsthand view of the impact that took the life of Kevin Ward, Jr.. What I wasn't prepared for was the difficulty I would have in making sense of it all and just getting on with my life. I knew that I needed to do something in order to find the same sense of normalcy that my life had before I witnessed the accident. That 'something' was a self-imposed therapeutic exercise of recording everything I could remember about the accident. While trying to work things out in my mind, I became increasingly disgusted with how the media sensationalized the accident, rather than simply reporting the facts as they became available. This disquiet continued later when, as a Grand Jury witness, I was further perplexed by the judicial process where, at least from my point of view, rather than it being an objective search for truth it seemed the verdict was pre-decided and everyone was merely going through the motions. Intentionally divided into 13 chapters as a dedication to the memory of Kevin, Smokescreen is an inside look at sprint car racing: what happened on that race day and how sometimes racers are their own worst enemy. The book follows me from my childhood, growing up the son of a local racer to driving a race car for the first time to 'walking in mile in Tony Stewart's shoes'. In each chapter I tell some anecdotes, drawing parallels to people and things related to the accident and the surrounding media storm.The most difficult admission I make is that at any moment I could be either Tony Stewart - the driver of a car involved in a fatal accident, or Kevin Ward Jr. - the driver so enraged with what had happened that he put himself directly in harm's way. These "song offerings" are the first poems Tagore ever published, though he passed them off as those of an unknown Bengali religious poet. As the first and last poems Tagore wrote and revised, they represent the entrance and exit to one of the most prolific literary lives of our contemporary world. The translation rights to Tagore’s poetry were tightly guarded until 2001, when they entered the public domain, making publication of this book possible. These English versions are the result of a five-year collaboration between Bengali scholar Tony K. Stewart, who provided richly associative literal translations, and the celebrated poet Chase Twichell, who shaped the poems into English. This bilingual Bengali-English edition also includes the "biography" Tagore wrote of the unknown religious poet who supposedly authored these poems. Rabindranath Tagore was born in Bengal, the youngest son of a religious reformer and scholar. He wrote successfully in all literary genres and is the author of the national anthems for both India and Bangladesh. In his mature years he managed the family estates, which brought him into close touch with common humanity and increased his interest in social reforms. He participated in the Indian nationalist movement, and was a devoted friend of Mahatma Gandhi. Tagore received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913; he was knighted in 1915 by the British Government, but later resigned the honor as a protest against British policies in India.

Believed to be an avatara of krsna, or a Sufi saint, or somehow both, he is worshiped for his ability to bring wealth and comfort to a family. At the heart of this worship is the simple proposition that human dignity and morality are dependent upon a proper livelihood-without wealth, people cannot be expected to live moral lives. Men have a special responsibility to create that stability, but sometimes fail miserably, making ill-advised decisions that compromise the women who are dependent upon them. At these threatening junctures, women must take matters into their own hands, and they call on Satya Pir to help them right the wrongs done by their husbands or fathers. In this book, Tony K. Stewart presents lively translations of eight closely related 18th- and 19th-century Bengali folk tales centered on Satya Pir and the people he helps. To extricate her husband and other family members from these predicaments, one heroine dresses in drag, dons armor to fight cutthroats, slays a raging rhino and hacks off its horn, and takes the prize of the king's daughter, to the consternation of all. In another tale, one woman's husband is magically transformed into a ram and kept by a witch as breeding stock, and another's is transformed into a popinjay parrot, the better to elude her jealous father, intent on protecting his good daughter's virtue. In each case the men are rescued and restored to normal by resourceful women. While the worship of Satya Pir is the ostensible motivation for the tales, they are really demonstrations of the Pir's miraculous powers, which authenticate him as a legitimate object of worship. The tales are also wickedly funny, parodying Brahmins and yogis and kings and sepoys. These surprising and entertaining stories fly in the face of conventional wisdom about the separation of Muslims and Hindus. Moreover, the stories happily stand alone, speaking with an easily recognized if not universal voice of exasperation and amazement at what life throws at us.
