Book excerpt: Jen B's been surviving at the nightmarishly brutal MLK High School just like everybody else: by following the rules. She avoids the Principal. She doesn't complain. She's loyal to her MLK 'family'. And, like 99.5% of the student body, she knows one form or another of martial arts. When Jen's world-famous Kung-Fu champion of a cousin Jimmy Chang turns up, everyone wants a piece of him - including Ridley, resident drug lord and leader of the school's most violent gang. They all want to see the legendary martial-arts master defend himself during the school's merciless initiation ritual. Except that Jimmy's made a promise never to fight again - a promise that soon leads to the murder of Jen's brother and a bloody final battle that engulfs the entire school. Fast-paced, gritty and addictive, Kung Fu by Ryan Gattis is an extreme journey into high-school violence and the American Dream that feeds it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A communication strategist shares her eight-stage process for connecting with any number of people with two-way interactions. Did you know: • Goldfish, yes, goldfish, have longer attention spans than we humans do? • One in four people abandons a website if it takes longer than four seconds to load? Imagine if there were ways, in a world of impatience and INFObesity, to quickly intrigue busy, distracted people and earn their interest, trust and buy-in. Imagine if there was a process for pleasantly surprising decision-makers and convincing them you're the right person for the job, position, project or contract. You don’t have to imagine it, Sam Horn has created it. Sam’s innovative techniques have helped her clients close deals and raise millions of dollars, and will be your “secret sauce” to getting funded, hired, elected, promoted or referred. “These accessible techniques transcend generations and read like a modern-day version of How to Win Friends and Influence People.” —Miki Agrawal, one of Forbes’s “Top 20 Millennials on a Mission” and founder of THINX “Sam Horn’s smart and snappy book will teach you how to get people’s attention—and keep it.” —Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of To Sell Is Human “If you can’t get people’s attention, you’ll never get their business. Sam Horn’s new book shows how to quickly earn respect so people are motivated to listen.” —Terry Jones, founder of Travelocity and WayBlazer and chair of Kayak “A must-read for those in the workplace who want to contribute at their highest level and create more strategic networks.” —Betsy Myers, former executive director, Center for Public Leadership, Harvard Kennedy School “Horn offers innovative ways to initiate genuine conversations and meaningful connections that turn strangers into friends.” —Keith Ferrazzi, author of the #1 bestseller Never Eat Alone

Book excerpt: A son of Chinese immigrants discovers his true self in a “sharply written debut . . . a coming-of-age tale for our time” (Seattle Times). Publishing Triangle’s Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction, Winner 2015 PEN/ Hemingway Award, Finalist Lambda Literary Award, Finalist Longlisted for the 2014 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize A Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Selection for Spring 2014 A New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice Shortlisted for the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize At birth, Peter Huang is given the Chinese name Juan Chaun, “powerful king.” To his parents, newly settled in small-town Ontario, he is the exalted only son in a sea of daughters, the one who will finally fulfill his immigrant father’s dreams of Western masculinity. Peter and his sisters grow up in an airless house of order and obligation, though secrets and half-truths simmer beneath the surface. At the first opportunity, each of the girls lights out on her own. But for Peter, escape is not as simple as fleeing his parents’ home. Though his father crowned him “powerful king,” Peter knows otherwise. He knows he is really a girl. With the help of his far-flung sisters and the sympathetic souls he finds along the way, Peter inches ever closer to his own life, his own skin, in this darkly funny, emotionally acute, stunningly powerful debut. “Sensitively wrought . . . “For Today I Am a Boy” is as much about the construction of self as the consequences of its unwitting destruction—and what happens when its acceptance seems as foreign as another country.” —The New York Times Book Review “Subtle and controlled, with flashes of humor and warmth.” —Slate “Keeps you reading. Told in snatches of memory that hurt so much they have the ring of truth.” —Bust

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you dealing with someone who makes you miserable? Does she cut people down or say something mean and then claim, "Just kidding?" Do you talk on eggshells because you never know what might set him off? Do you work with, for, or around someone who loves to stir up drama? Do you wish this person would just leave you alone? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you're in the right place. This "tell-it-the-way-it-is" book teaches you exactly what to say and do when someone is mistreating you - at work, at home, online, at school or next door. It also shows why the well-intended "Be the change you wish to see" approach backfires with bullies. Why? Bullies don't care what's fair. They don't want to cooperate, they want to control. They don't want a win-win, they want to win. The nicer you are to them, the meaner they'll be to you. The good news is, you can learn how to stand up and speak up for yourself and others, instead of feeling defenseless and powerless. In this book, you will discover what to do when the 5%ers (bullies, haters, trolls and toxics): Throw a tantrum and cause a scene to get their way Never admit fault and blame everyone else for what goes wrong Lie, cheat, make things up, break promises, play martyr Insist on being in control and attack anyone who challenges them Treat others - customers, employees, students, family members - cruelly Seem to get pleasure out of causing other people pain Develop the courage, confidence and communication skills to hold bullies accountable so they no longer take advantage of your good nature, and no longer have the power to undermine the self-esteem, morale, performance, productivity and success of the people around them."

Book excerpt: Tommy knows he wants to be an artist when he grows up. He can't wait to get to school and have real art lessons. When Tommy gets to school and finds out that the art lessons are full of "rules", he is surprised and dismayed. How the wise art teacher finds a way to give Tommy the freedom to create and stay within the "rules" makes a wonderfully perceptive picture book about growing up and keeping one's individuality. Tomie dePaola is the author and illustrator of many beloved books for children, including the Caldecott Honor Book Strega Nona. Fans of all ages will be pleased to hear that The Art Lesson is, in fact, based on the artist's own experiences growing up, and offers a welcome glimpse into his past. This bright picture book is as covered with drawings as the walls of Tommy's parents' and grandparents' houses, and sends an inspirational message to budding artists and individualists.
