It is made up of 169 islands, 36 of which are inhabited. The capital and largest island is Tongatapu, which is home to about two-thirds of the country's population. The Tongan culture is deeply rooted in tradition and is known for its hospitality, respect for elders, and the importance placed on family and community. Tonga is a constitutional monarchy with the King serving as the head of state. The country has a unicameral Parliament, which consists of 26 members: 17 elected by the people and 9 appointed by the King. The economy is largely based on agriculture and fishing, with tourism also playing an important role in recent years. The official language is Tongan, although English is widely spoken, especially in business settings. Despite its small size and limited resources, Tonga has a distinct place in the Pacific and is known for its unique culture, friendly people, and beautiful landscape.

Book Synopsis Relationality and Learning in Oceania by : Seu'ula Johansson-Fua
Download or read book Relationality and Learning in Oceania written by Seu'ula Johansson-Fua and published by Comparative and International. This book was released on 2020 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This multi-authored volume draws on the collective experiences of a team of researcher-practitioners, from three Oceanic universities, in an aid-funded intervention program for enhancing literacy learning in Pacific Islands primary education schools. The interventions explored here-in Solomon Islands and Tonga-were implemented via a four-year collaboration which adopted a design-based research approach to bringing about sustainable improvements in teacher and student learning, and in the delivery and evaluation of educational aid. This approach demanded that learning from the context of practice should be determining of both content and process; that all involved in the interventions should see themselves as learners. Essential to the trusting and respectful relationships required for this approach was the program's acknowledgement of relationality as central to indigenous Oceanic societies, and of education as a relational activity. Relationality and Learning in Oceania: Contextualizing Education for Development addresses debates current in both comparative education and international aid. Argued strongly is that relational research-practice approaches (south-south, south-north) which center the importance of context and culture, and the significance of indigenous epistemologies, are required to strengthen education within the post-colonial relational space of Oceania, and to inform the various agencies and actors involved in 'education for development' in Oceania and globally. Maintained is that the development of education structures and processes within the contexts explored through the chapters comprising this volume, continues to be a negotiation between the complexity of historically developed local 'traditions' and understandings and the 'global' imperatives shaped by dominant development discourses"--

Book Synopsis Weaving Secure Futures by : Alison Tu'i'onetoa
Download or read book Weaving Secure Futures written by Alison Tu'i'onetoa and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is an ethnographic case study of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga (FWCT) education system. Over a period of two years I have worked alongside staff in the office, kindergartens and schools improving the provision of FWCT education through resourcing, school management and staff appraisal, educational programmes to promote FWCT schools as a viable option for Tongan students. This experience has informed a critical analysis of the educational provision, and reflection on ways forward for the system as a whole. There are clear challenges for Pacific education in the 21st century. Pacific educational researchers have called for greater recognition of indigenous knowledge and practices in response to increasing marginalisation of Pacific communities in a global world. Tonga has gone through rapid social change as Tongans join the diaspora in search of educational and economic opportunities, and Tonga has begun a new era of more democratic leadership. Education must respond to the increasingly young population who will remain in Tonga. Current educational practices have developed from the origin of formal Western schooling brought with the missionaries, and been influenced by government policies, international aid contributions and professional guidance for education specialists, and by the policies and processes of the FWCT church. This thesis outlines the nature of educational provision in the FWCT schools and reveals some of the influences which promote and impede effective practice. Teachers are increasingly accessing improved curriculum materials, and workshops designed to enhance pedagogical practices. Professional performance however demonstrates adult-child relationships and interactions reflective of the historical beginnings of the church education system. There remains a tension between the understanding of education as a knowledge 'banking' process, and education which develops critical thought to promote creativity, adaptability and entrepreneurial skills to respond to the challenges of life in modern Tonga - education as a process whereby all students are able to develop competencies which will equip them to contribute to their families, communities, church and the society. The thesis contributes to understanding of current educational practice in the context of Tongan society and the Free Wesleyan church, and suggests how the development of successful future focused education in the FWCT system would benefit from developing dialogical, collaborative relationships, encouraged by leaders with vision, professionalism and a commitment to every student.

Book Synopsis Early Childhood Development in Tonga by : Sally Brinkman
Download or read book Early Childhood Development in Tonga written by Sally Brinkman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Childhood Development in Tonga offers a comprehensive assessment of early child development across Tonga using the Tongan Early Human Capability Index instrument. The data has information on more than 6,600 children, ages three to five, living across 36 inhabited islands, and reported for 129 communities. On the basis of population figures from the Tongan census data collection provided by the Tonga Department of Statistics, 81 percent of three- to five-year-olds participated in the Tongan Early Human Capability Index. The report details the development of the instrument used to collect the child development data to ensure cultural validity and local relevance, while still capturing the fundamental aspects of child development that are consistent across countries and cultures. As well as the development of the instrument, other countries will also be interested in learning about h the method of data collection across a country with remote and isolated islands using an innovative partnership between health and education. Using existing systems and community governance structures, the data was not only collected but also disseminated back to communities to raise awareness and prompt community and government mobilization to support early child development. The process of developing and implementing the Tongan Early Human Capability Index across Tonga helped build national and district capacity, and is encouraging the establishment of community-based supports for children. Researchers, policy makers, and practitioners as well as advocates for the development and enhancement of systems to monitor early child development worldwide will find this publication highly significant.
