Book Synopsis Schoenberg and His World by : Walter Frisch
Download or read book Schoenberg and His World written by Walter Frisch and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the twentieth century draws to a close, Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) is being acknowledged as one of its most significant and multifaceted composers. Schoenberg and His World explores the richness of his genius through commentary and documents. Marilyn McCoy opens the volume with a concise chronology, based on the latest scholarship, of Schoenberg's life and works. Essays by Joseph Auner, Leon Botstein, Reinhold Brinkmann, J. Peter Burkholder, Severine Neff, and Rudolf Stephan examine aspects of his creative output, theoretical writings, relation to earlier music, and the socio-cultural contexts in which he worked. The documentary portions of Schoenberg and His World capture Schoenberg at critical periods of his career: during the first decades of the century, primarily in his native Vienna; from 1926 to 1933, in Berlin; and from 1933 on, in the U.S. Included here is the first complete translation into English of the remarkable Festschrift prepared for the 38-year-old Schoenberg by his pupils in 1912; it presciently explored the diverse talents as a composer, teacher, painter, and theorist for which he was later to be recognized. The Berlin years, when he held one of the most prestigious teaching positions in Europe, are represented by interviews with him and articles about his public lectures. The final portion of the volume, devoted to the theme Schoenberg and America, focuses on how the composer viewed--and was viewed by--the country where he spent his final eighteen years. Sabine Feisst brings together and comments upon sources which, contrary to much received opinion, attest to both the considerable impact that Schoenberg had upon his newly adopted land and his own deep involvement in its musical life.

Book Synopsis Music and Narrative Since 1900 by : Michael L. Klein
Download or read book Music and Narrative Since 1900 written by Michael L. Klein and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume offers a wide-ranging perspective on the stories that art music has told since the start of the 20th century. Contributors challenge the broadly held opinion that the loss of tonality in some music after 1900 also meant the loss of narrative in that music. To the contrary, the editors and essayists in this book demonstrate how experiments in approaching narrative in other media, such as fiction and cinema, suggested fresh possibilities for musical narrative, which composers were quick to exploit. The new conceptions of time, narrative voice, plot, and character that accompanied these experiments also had a significant impact on contemporary music. The repertoire explored in the collection ranges across a wide variety of genres and includes composers from Charles Ives and the Pet Shop Boys to Thomas Adès and Dmitri Shostakovich.

Download or read book Tonal Intelligence written by Sunny Xiang and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why were U.S. intelligence organizations so preoccupied with demystifying East and Southeast Asia during the mid-twentieth century? Sunny Xiang offers a new way of understanding the American cold war in Asia by tracing aesthetic manifestations of “Oriental inscrutability” across a wide range of texts. She examines how cold war regimes of suspicious thinking produced an ambiguity between “Oriental” enemies and Asian allies, contributing to the conflict’s status as both a “real war” and a “long peace.” Xiang puts interrogation reports, policy memos, and field notes into conversation with novels, poems, documentaries, and mixed media work by artists such as Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ha Jin, and Trinh T. Minh-ha. She engages her archive through a reading practice centered on tone, juxtaposing Asian diasporans who appear similar in profile yet who differ in tone. Tonal Intelligence considers how the meaning of race, war, and empire came under pressure during two interlinked periods of geopolitical transition: American “nation-building” in East and Southeast Asia during the mid-twentieth century and Asian economic modernization during the late twentieth century. By reading both state records and aesthetic texts from these periods for their tone rather than their content, Xiang shows how bygone threats of Asian communism and emergent regimes of Asian capitalism have elicited distinct yet related anxieties about racial intelligibility. Featuring bold methods, unlikely archives, and acute close readings, Tonal Intelligence rethinks the marking and making of race during the long cold war.

Download or read book Chromaticism written by Vladimir Barsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musical practices in the 20th century pose new and complex problems in the study of the fundamental principles of pitch organization. The analysis of basic harmonic categories, one of which is chromaticism, acquires particular importance as a means of restoring time, which has gone out of joint and identifying the logical principles in the historical process of musical development. Vladimir Barsky, in his thoroughly researched and clearly written guide, traces the progress of the concept of chromaticism throughout Western musical history, and recreates an integrated logical and historical perspective in order to make a specific study of this key subject. He identifies the dynamics of the changing historical theories of chromaticism and relates these to musical practices, applying them to the analysis of current pitch systems. This book will be an invaluable tool for readers whose aim is to come nearer to comprehending the idioms of 20th century music.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Schoenberg by : Jennifer Shaw
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Schoenberg written by Jennifer Shaw and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-13 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold Schoenberg – composer, theorist, teacher, painter, and one of the most important and controversial figures in twentieth-century music. This Companion presents engaging essays by leading scholars on Schoenberg's central works, writings, and ideas over his long life in Vienna, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Challenging monolithic views of the composer as an isolated elitist, the volume demonstrates that what has kept Schoenberg and his music interesting and provocative was his profound engagement with the musical traditions he inherited and transformed, with the broad range of musical and artistic developments during his lifetime he critiqued and incorporated, and with the fundamental cultural, social, and political disruptions through which he lived. The book provides introductions to Schoenberg's most important works, and to his groundbreaking innovations including his twelve-tone compositions. Chapters also examine Schoenberg's lasting influence on other composers and writers over the last century.
