Book Synopsis Studies in the Music of Tomás Luis de Victoria by : EugeneCasjen Cramer
Download or read book Studies in the Music of Tomás Luis de Victoria written by EugeneCasjen Cramer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing nearly thirty years of research by one of the leading scholars in the field, this series of in-depth studies examines selected aspects of the music of the great Spanish composer in the late Renaissance, Tom Luis de Victoria. Presenting new insights into both the musical style and language and the compositional procedure of this contemporary of Palestrina, Lasso and Byrd, Eugene Cramer illuminates the extent to which Victoria's compositions are musically related. The book reveals that the falsobordone or fabord layed a much larger role in Victoria's music than has previously been thought. Cramer also demonstrates that Victoria's parody or imitation technique, especially in respect to his Masses of 1592, extended the parameters that are generally thought to be characteristic of works of this type. Of special interest is the discussion of thirty-eight works, including thirty-four psalm settings that are attributed to Victoria in extant manuscript sources. Extensively illustrated with over 130 musical examples, these studies will not only interest the serious student of sacred music, but also the performer, both the singer and the conductor alike.
Book Synopsis Classical Polyphony by : P. Samuel Rubio
Download or read book Classical Polyphony written by P. Samuel Rubio and published by Heritage. This book was released on 1972-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name of P. Samuel Rubio is known to students of Renaissance polyphony for his scholarly articles in learned periodicals, his editorship of different collections of sacred polyphony, and through his edition of the motets of Victory -- Tomás Luis de Victoria, Motetes, Vols. 1-4 (union Musical Española, Madrid -- 1964). Text books -- in English -- on the subject of sixteenth-century counterpoint are numerous and excellent; but none discusses the classical polyphonic style with quite the understanding affection that Father Rubio brings to this task. His treatment of notation, time-signatures, the modes, chromatic alteration, is supported by opposite quotation from sixteenth-century authorities and his discussion of form and texture are based on a knowledge derived from wide experience in performance as well as close analytical study.

Book Synopsis Renaissance Polyphony by : Fabrice Fitch
Download or read book Renaissance Polyphony written by Fabrice Fitch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging study introduces Renaissance polyphony to a modern audience. It helps readers of all ages and levels of experience make sense of what they are hearing. How does Renaissance music work? How is a piece typical of its style and type; or, if it is exceptional, what makes it so? The makers of polyphony were keenly aware of the specialized nature of their craft. How is this reflected in the music they wrote, and how were they regarded by their patrons and audiences? Through a combination of detailed, nuanced appreciation of musical style and a lucid overview of current debates, this book offers a glimpse of meanings behind and beyond the notes, be they playful or profound. It will enhance the listening experience of students, performers and music lovers alike.

Download or read book Iberia written by James A. Michener and published by Dial Press Trade Paperback. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Massive, beautiful . . . unquestionably some of the best writing on Spain [and] the best that Mr. Michener has ever done on any subject.”—The Wall Street Journal Spain is an immemorial land like no other, one that James A. Michener, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author and celebrated citizen of the world, came to love as his own. Iberia is Michener’s enduring nonfiction tribute to his cherished second home. In the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated history of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards, he also shares the intimate, often hidden country he came to know, where the congeniality of living souls is thrust against the dark weight of history. Wild, contradictory, passionately beautiful, this is Spain as experienced by a master writer.
Book Synopsis Holy Women, Holy Men by : Church Publishing,
Download or read book Holy Women, Holy Men written by Church Publishing, and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully revised and expanded, this new work is the first major revision of the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church in more than 40 years! It is the official revision of Lesser Feasts and Fasts and authorized by the 2009 General Convention. All commemorations in Lesser Feasts and Fasts have been retained, and many new ones added. Three scripture readings (instead of current two) are provided for all minor holy days. Additional new material includes a votive mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many more ecumenical commemorations, plus a proper for space exploration. For years the oft revised volume, Lesser Feasts and Fasts (LFF), has served parishes and individuals mark part of the holiness of each day by providing Scripture readings, a collect, a Eucharistic preface, and a narrative about those remembered on the church's calendar that day whose lives have witnessed to the grace of God. Holy Women, Holy Men (HWHM) is a major effort to revise, but also to expand and enrich LFF. Where LFF provided two readings (gospel and other New Testament) plus a psalm, HWHM adds an Old Testament citation. Where LFF was limited to few non-Anglicans in the post-reformation period (and few non-Episcopalians after 1789), HWHM dramatically broadens appreciation for other Christians and their traditions. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.

Book Synopsis Musical Theatre at the Court of Louis XIV by : Rebecca Harris-Warrick
Download or read book Musical Theatre at the Court of Louis XIV written by Rebecca Harris-Warrick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Le Mariage de la Grosse Cathos, a short ballet performed at the court of Louis XIV, is of major importance to the study of French Baroque dance. This facsimile reproduction of the entire manuscript is accompanied by a comprehensive study of the work itself and the context in which it was created and performed. Dated 1688, it provides a wealth of new and detailed information on numerous aspects of theatrical dance. It differs from the known choreographic sources in many respects, the two most important being the completeness of all its components--choreography, music, and text--and the use of a previously unknown dance notation system.
Book Synopsis Sources of Identity by : Lisa Colton
Download or read book Sources of Identity written by Lisa Colton and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers included in this volume were presented, in much shorter form, at a conference entitled 'Sources of Identity: Makers, Owners and Users of Music Sources Before 1600' held at the University of Sheffield in 2013. The stated aim of the event was to leave aside the traditionally dominant view of early music sources as a means of access to medieval and Renaissance repertoires, focussing instead on the people who commissioned, made, owned and used music books, and on their reasons for so doing. In the terms proposed by a recent study of art patronage in the period, what was the 'payoff' enjoyed by individuals and groups who created and deployed such objects?
Book Synopsis Giving Voice to Love by : Judith A. Peraino
Download or read book Giving Voice to Love written by Judith A. Peraino and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lyrics of medieval "courtly love" songs are characteristically self-conscious. Giving Voice to Love investigates similar self-consciousness in the musical settings. Moments and examples where voice, melody, rhythm, form, and genre seem to comment on music itself tell us about musical responses to the courtly chanson tradition, and musical reflections on the complexity of self-expression.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Monteverdi by : John Whenham
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Monteverdi written by John Whenham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claudio Monteverdi is one of the most important figures of 'early' music, a composer whose music speaks powerfully and directly to modern audiences. This book, first published in 2007, provides an authoritative treatment of Monteverdi and his music, complementing Paolo Fabbri's standard biography of the composer. Written by leading specialists in the field, it is aimed at students, performers and music-lovers in general and adds significantly to our understanding of Monteverdi's music, his life, and the contexts in which he worked. Chapters offering overviews of his output of sacred, secular and dramatic music are complemented by 'intermedi', in which contributors examine individual works, or sections of works in detail. The book draws extensively on Monteverdi's letters and includes a select discography/videography and a complete list of Monteverdi's works together with an index of first lines and titles.
