Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exile was a potent form of punishment and a catalyst for change in colonial Asia between the seventeenth and early twentieth centuries. Vast networks of forced migration supplied laborers to emerging colonial settlements, while European powers banished rivals to faraway locations. Exile in Colonial Asia explores the phenomenon of exile in ten case studies by way of three categories: “kings,” royals banished as political exiles; “convicts,” the vast majority of those whose lives are explored in this volume, sent halfway across the world with often unexpected consequences; and “commemoration,” referring to the myriad ways in which the experience and its aftermath were remembered by those exiled, relatives left behind, colonial officials, and subsequent generations of descendants, devotees, historians, and politicians. Intended for a broad readership interested in the colonial period in Asia (South and Southeast Asia in particular), the volume encompasses a range of disciplinary perspectives: anthropology, gender studies, literature, history, and Asian, Australian, and Pacific studies. In addition to presenting fascinating, little-known, and varied case studies of exile in colonial Asia and Australia, the chapters collectively offer a sweeping, contextualized, comparative approach that links the narratives of diverse peoples and locales. Rather than confining research to the European colonial archives, whenever possible the authors put special emphasis on the use of indigenous primary sources hitherto little explored. Exile in Colonial Asia invites imaginative methodological innovation in exploring multiple archives and expands our theoretical frontiers in thinking about the interconnected histories of penal deportation, labor migration, political exile, colonial expansion, and individual destinies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Samuel Sidney developed an interest in the Australian colony after the emigration of his brother John to New South Wales. Samuel and John established the magazine Sidney's Emigrant Journal, and worked together on two books concerning Australian emigration. The present work is an excellent description of Australia's contemporary state, where Samuel Sidney is clearly influenced by both Caroline Chisholm and Alexander Harris. He argues that the Australian colonies are ideal for working class emigration. Already in the introduction it becomes clear that Sidney is very anti-Wakefield, which makes it an important document in the debate between competing proposals for emigration. Apparently Sidney was very well-informed, he had access to otherwise inaccessible primary sources, and the verbatim transcripts add considerably to the book's value. Sidney's work is a full guide, giving excessive and detailed information on one of the most interesting world-regions."--Abebooks website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Fenton (1820-1901) was born in Ireland and emigrated to Tasmania (then known as Van Diemen's Land) with his family in 1833. He became a pioneer settler in an area on the Forth River and published this history of the island in 1884. The book begins with the discovery of the island in 1642 and concludes with the deaths of some significant public figures in the colony in 1884. The establishment of the colony on the island, and the involvement of convicts in its building, is documented. A chapter on the native aborigines gives a fascinating insight into the attitudes of the colonising people, and a detailed account of the removal of the native Tasmanians to Flinders Island, in an effort to separate them from the colonists. The book also contains portraits of some aboriginal people, as well as a glossary of their language.

Book excerpt: William Paterson was the longest serving official during the first two decades of European settlement of New South Wales but has largely been overlooked by historians. He and his wife Elizabeth have been rescued from obscurity by this book. Both were energetic, talented Scots whose lives were framed by empire and the Enlightenment. The book moves from Scotland to Africa and India and then offers a fresh look at the turbulent early years of New South Wales from their perspective. William Paterson commanded the regiment nicknamed "the Rum Corps", and led a rebel government after his officers deposed the NSW Governor, William Bligh, in a military coup. The book chronicles William Paterson's achievements and weaknesses as a botanist, officer and acting governor. It also challenges populist views of the Rum Corps and Rum Rebellion and offers an alternative perspective on this extraordinary period in Australia's history. As a keen part-time botanist, William Paterson gained recognition in his lifetime as Australia's first Fellow of the Royal Society, Britain's peak body for the advancement of science. Today his contribution is commemorated by a plant genus and more than 20 species named in his honour. He also arranged the importation of the first Merino sheep into Australia.Elizabeth Paterson refused to live in William's shadow. She was an intelligent, high-ranking colonial woman who made her mark in a male-dominated society and rode out the political storms that surrounded her husband. Elizabeth and her friend Anna King established the Sydney Female Orphan School, becoming the first women in Australia to manage a public institution. The book explains why the Paterson footprint is so strongly etched into today's maps of Australia - in New South Wales a town and a river bear the Paterson name. In northern Tasmania, William Paterson founded today's City of Launceston and part of Elizabeth Paterson's land grant has become the Launceston suburb of Youngtown. Other reminders in Launceston include Paterson Street, Paterson Bridge and Paterson Island.
