Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a friends-to-lovers story spanning more than a decade… At first, I thought I’d hate spending the summer with Archie Remington—the conceited son of my parents’ friends. What I knew about Archie: he was gorgeous, pre-law, and had always treated me like I didn’t exist when we were younger. When our families bought a house together on an island in Maine, he and I were forced to share a bathroom. The boy I remembered was now a full-grown man—but with the same attitude. After a rough start, Archie and I unexpectedly started getting along one day and eventually became friends. We shared secrets and bonded during our morning jogs. I discovered that Archie had a wild spirit and that he struggled to conform to his father’s expectations. Things were cool until I had to go and ruin it, getting drunk one night, and blurting out my fantasy—involving him. I took it back, but it was too late. Archie had heard me loud and clear. After that, we never quite knew how to toe the line. When that summer came to an abrupt and shocking end, I headed back to college, unsure if anything would ever be the same again. Across the miles over the years, he and I stayed in touch as friends, but fate and timing always kept us from becoming more. You know the saying: If two people are meant to be, they’ll find their way back to each other? Let’s just say Archie came back into my life in a way I would’ve never expected. And this time, my heart would really be put to the test.

Book excerpt: A Dictionary of Anglo-American Proverbs & Proverbial Phrases Found in Literary Sources of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries is a unique collection of proverbial language found in literary contexts. It includes proverbial materials from a multitude of plays, (auto)biographies of well-known actors like Britain's Laurence Olivier, songs by William S. Gilbert or Lorenz Hart, and American crime stories by Leslie Charteris. Other authors represented in the dictionary are Horatio Alger, Margery Allingham, Samuel Beckett, Lewis Carroll, Raymond Chandler, Benjamin Disraeli, Edward Eggleston, Hamlin Garland, Graham Greene, Thomas C. Haliburton, Bret Harte, Aldous Huxley, Sinclair Lewis, Jack London, George Orwell, Eden Phillpotts, John B. Priestley, Carl Sandburg, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Jesse Stuart, Oscar Wilde, and more. Many lesser-known dramatists, songwriters, and novelists are included as well, making the contextualized texts to a considerable degree representative of the proverbial language of the past two centuries. While the collection contains a proverbial treasure trove for paremiographers and paremiologists alike, it also presents general readers interested in folkloric, linguistic, cultural, and historical phenomena with an accessible and enjoyable selection of proverbs and proverbial phrases.

Book excerpt: An entertaining and informative guide to the most common 150 words even smart people use incorrectly, along with pithy forays into their fascinating etymologies and tangled histories of use and misuse. Even the most erudite among us use words like apocryphal, facetious, ironic, meteorite, moot, redundant, and unique incorrectly every day. Don’t be one of them. Using examples of misuse from leading newspapers, prominent public figures and famous writers, among others, language gurus Ross Petras and Kathryn Petras explain how to avoid these perilous pitfalls in the English language. Each entry also includes short histories of how and why these mistake have happened, some of the (often surprisingly nasty) debates about which uses are (and are not) mistakes, and finally, how to use these words correctly … or why to not use them at all. By the end of this book, every literati will be able to confidently, casually, and correctly toss in an “a priori” or a “limns” without hesitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Careful writers and speakers agree that clich?s are generally to be avoided. However, nearly all of us continue to use them. Why do they persist in our language? In It's Been Said Before, lexicographer Orin Hargraves examines the peculiar idea and power of the clich?. He helps readers understand why certain phrases became clich?s and why they should be avoided -- or why they still have life left in them. Indeed, clich?s can be useful -- even powerful. And few people even agree on which expressions are clich?s and which are not. Many regard any frequent idiom as a clich?, and a phrase regarded as a clich? in one context may be seen simply as an effective expression in another. Examples drawn from data about actual usage support Hargraves' identification of true clich?s. They also illuminate his commentary on usage problems and helpful suggestions for eliminating clich?s where they serve no useful purpose. Concise and lively, It's Been Said Before serves as a guide to the most overused phrases in the English language -- and to phrases that are used exactly as often as they should be.

We're aiming to get rid of that and explain things in plain English, using language that is easy to understand. Try it out and see for yourself. Book excerpt: Rachel Toor was a bookish egghead who ran only to catch a bus. How such an unlikely athlete became a runner of ultramarathons is the story of Personal Record, an exhilarating meditation on the making, and the minutiae, of a runner s life. The food, the clothes, the races, the injuries, the watch (and Toor loves her watch) are all essential to the runner, as readers discover here, and discover why. A chronicle of Toor s relationship with the sport of running, from her early incarnation as an Oreo-eating couch potato to her emergence as a hard-bodied marathoner, this book explores the sport of running, the community it brings into being, and the personal satisfaction of pursuing it to its limit. Alternating with Toor s account of becoming a runner are the stories meditations, examinations, celebrations of how runners become a pack. An homage to running, a literary take on how an activity can turn into a passion, and how a passion can become a way of life, this book runs all the way from individual achievement a personal record to the world of friendship and belonging, the community that runners inevitably find.

Book excerpt: The narrative is one of transforming from a naive teen HS graduate to a member of the US Navy, the American military. This all occurred during a transformative time in generational attitudes and a transformative time in history. The timeline is the summer of 1967, the summer when everyone wore flowers in their hair and burned their draft cards. In the sixties, it was common practice for working-class teens to either pursue a job somewhere with “benefits” or join the military. College was for suburban kids. I, being a Chicago kid, figured that I was a fairly smart guy and could learn a technical skill in the military, so I set my sights on that path after graduation. Because the Vietnam War was being fought and was a “hot” war at that, the branch of the military that sounded safest to me was the navy. So I found myself at a recruiter’s office three months before graduation so that I could go from “cap and gown” to bell-bottomed pants in no time at all. I would have to describe my boot camp experience as fun. As I said, I was naive and had absolutely no expectations, went with the flow, and had fun observing the process of turning a bunch of unruly teenagers (for the most part) into a disciplined group of sailors. I was also aware of the Vietnam War, a war that I may very well be a part of. It was a war that I didn’t have a very strong opinion of at the time but one that I felt was evolving. A lot of people relate 1969 to the seminal year with the Vietnam war, like that was the year the younger generation started to notice the war. In my mind, the year 1969 is when the generational attitudes toward the war boiled over. We were burning draft cards in 1967; we were protesting; my generation was becoming counter-culture hippies. The Jefferson Airplane was introducing my generation to recreational drugs; Scott McKenzie was telling us to wear flowers in our hair. The year 1967 was 1969 lite.
