Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is Toby? Toby was created in 2011. At work one day, while I was sitting at my desk, I finished writing my story on Toby. Funny, I wanted to be like Toby and have special powers, but he didn't know that he had this gift. Toby is this nine-year old boy, a genius, but most kids would say a nerd escaping the real world. Everything came clear for him until one morning when Toby had to print off his homework. He jumped out of bed, turned on his computer, and to his surprise, his world changed instantly. Suddenly, purple smoke was coming from his computer. Purple smoke was everywhere, and animals were rushing out and making all kinds of noises as Toby stood there in shock.... This is the story of Toby and his purple world.

Book excerpt: An award-winning journalist reveals the dramatic true story of the CIA's Team Alpha, the first Americans to be dropped behind enemy lines in Afghanistan after 9/11. America is reeling; Al-Qaeda has struck and thousands are dead. The country scrambles to respond, but the Pentagon has no plan for Afghanistan—where Osama bin Laden masterminded the attack and is protected by the Taliban. Instead, the CIA steps forward to spearhead the war. Eight CIA officers are dropped into the mountains of northern Afghanistan on October 17, 2001. They are Team Alpha, an eclectic band of linguists, tribal experts, and elite warriors: the first Americans to operate inside Taliban territory. Their covert mission is to track down Al- Qaeda and stop the terrorists from infiltrating the United States again. First Casualty places you with Team Alpha as the CIA rides into battle on horseback alongside the warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum. In Washington, DC, few trust that the CIA men, the Green Berets, and the Americans’ outnumbered Afghan allies can prevail before winter sets in. On the ground, Team Alpha is undeterred. The Taliban is routed but hatches a plot with Al-Qaeda to hit back. Hundreds of suicidal fighters, many hiding weapons, fake a surrender and are transported to Qala-i Jangi—the “Fort of War.” Team Alpha’s Mike Spann, an ex-Marine, and David Tyson, a polyglot former Central Asian studies academic, seize America’s initial opportunity to extract intelligence from men trained by bin Laden—among them a young Muslim convert from California. The prisoners revolt and one CIA officer falls—the first casualty in America’s longest war, which will last two decades. The other CIA man shoots dead the Al-Qaeda jihadists attacking his comrade. To survive, he must fight his way out against overwhelming odds. Award-winning author Toby Harnden gained unprecedented access to all living Team Alpha members and every level of the CIA. Superbly researched, First Casualty draws on extensive interviews, secret documents, and deep reporting inside Afghanistan. As gripping as any adventure novel, yet intimate and profoundly moving, it tells how America found a winning strategy only to abandon it. Harnden reveals that the lessons of early victory and the haunting foretelling it contained—unreliable allies, ethnic rivalries, suicide attacks, and errant US bombs—were ignored, tragically fueling a twenty-year conflict. "Masterful, complex, and heartfelt, from the deeply personal to the critically strategic. Captures many lessons on many levels." —Ambassador Hank Crumpton, former senior CIA officer

Book excerpt: ‘A compelling invitation to imagine the future we want’ —BRIAN CHRISTIAN, author of The Most Human Human By 2062 we will have built machines as intelligent as us – so the leading artificial intelligence and robotics experts predict. But what will this future look like? In 2062, world-leading researcher Toby Walsh considers the impact AI will have on work, war, economics, politics, everyday life and even death. Will automation take away most jobs? Will robots become conscious and take over? Will we become immortal machines ourselves, uploading our brains to the cloud? How will politics adjust to the post-truth, post-privacy digitised world? When we have succeeded in building intelligent machines, how will life on this planet unfold? Based on a deep understanding of technology, 2062 describes the choices we need to make today to ensure that the future remains bright. ‘Clarity and sanity in a world full of fog and uncertainty – a timely book about the race to remain human.’ —RICHARD WATSON, author of Digital Vs. Human and futurist-in-residence at Imperial College, London ‘One of the deepest questions facing humanity, pondered by a mind well and truly up to the task.’ —ADAM SPENCER, broadcaster

Book excerpt: Maggie McDiarmit takes after her father Dermot in every respect: her wild red hair, her love of horses - and her weakness for picking pockets. After Maggie and Dermot have stolen the passage money, the McDiarmit family travel to Australia, land of opportunity. But old habits die hard and when her pickpocketing skills come to light Maggie is forced to flee from the city. Accepting grazier Callum MacGregor's offer of a domestic position on his family's property, Maggie instinctively trusts him. In fact it is almost as though she has met him before. Soon Maggie realises why. Callum's younger brother, Hamish, from whom he is bitterly estranged, is none other than the young man her father robbed in Melbourne. Hamish has every reason to scorn and denounce her - but seeing his brother's undisguised interest in Maggie, he takes a more subtle revenge... Book excerpt: Though New Zealand author Janet Frame (1924–2004) lived at a time of growing dissatisfaction with European cultural models, and though her (auto-)biography, fiction and letters all testify to the fact that a direct encounter between herself and Buddhism occurred, her work has, so far, never been examined from the vantage point of its indebtedness to Buddhism. It is of the utmost significance, however, that a Buddhist navigation of Frame’s texts should shed fresh light on large segments of the Framean corpus which have tended to remain obdurately mysterious. This includes passages centering on such themes as the existence of a non-dual world or a character’s sudden embrace of a non-ego-like self. Of equal significance is the conclusion one then draws that this unharnessed world which human beings are often unable to embrace has always been right under their nose, for, whenever the aspect of the intellect that filters perceptions into mutually excluding categories fails to function, he or she finds a place of subjective arrival in, and sees, this supposedly unknowable ‘beyond’. Thus, possibly against the grain of mainstream criticism, this study argues that Janet Frame constantly seeks ways through which the infinite and the Other can be approached, though not corrupted, by the perceiving self, and that she found in the Buddhist epistemology a pathway towards evoking such alterity.
