Book Synopsis Gaslighted by : Christine L. Williams
Download or read book Gaslighted written by Christine L. Williams and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil and gas industry is one of the richest and most powerful industries in the world. In recent years, company avowals in support of diversity, much-touted programs for "women in STEM," and, most importantly, a tight labor market with near parity in women pursuing geoscience credentials might lead us to expect progress for women in this industry's corporate ranks. Yet, for all the talk of "the great crew change," the industry remains overwhelmingly white and male. Sociologist Christine L. Williams asks, where are the women? To answer this question, Williams embarked on a decade-long investigation—one involving one hundred in-depth interviews, a longitudinal survey, and ethnographic research—that allowed her to observe the industry in times of boom and bust. She found that when the industry expands, women may be able to walk through the door, but when the industry contracts, the door becomes a revolving one, whirling ever faster, as companies retreat to their white male core. These gendered outcomes are obscured by firms' stated commitments to diversity in hiring and the language of merit. The result is organizational gaslighting, a radical dissonance between language and practice that Williams exposes for all.
Book Synopsis Handcrafted Careers by : Eli Revelle Yano Wilson
Download or read book Handcrafted Careers written by Eli Revelle Yano Wilson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As workers attempt new modes of employment in the era of the Great Resignation, they face a labor landscape that is increasingly uncertain and stubbornly unequal. With Handcrafted Careers, sociologist Eli Revelle Yano Wilson dives head-first into the everyday lives of workers in the craft beer industry to address key questions facing American workers today--about what makes a good career, who gets to have one, and how career progress in craft brewing might unfold. Wilson argues that what ends up contributing to divergent career paths in craft beer is a complex interplay of workers' own social connections, personal tastes, and cultural ideas about work, as well as crucial industry structures that are exclusionary. The culture of work in craft beer is based around normative white male ideals that can lead to select opportunities for some while limiting the advancement of women and people of color. A fresh perspective on this and other similar niche industries, Handcrafted Careers offers key insights into how people navigate worlds of work that promote ideas of authenticity and passion yet in reality can be unpredictable"--Provided by publisher.

Download or read book Hedged Out written by Megan Tobias Neely and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former hedge fund worker takes an ethnographic approach to Wall Street to expose who wins, who loses, and why inequality endures. Who do you think of when you imagine a hedge fund manager? A greedy fraudster, a visionary entrepreneur, a wolf of Wall Street? These tropes capture the public imagination of a successful hedge fund manager. But behind the designer suits, helicopter commutes, and illicit pursuits are the everyday stories of people who work in the hedge fund industry—many of whom don’t realize they fall within the 1 percent that drives the divide between the richest and the rest. With Hedged Out, sociologist and former hedge fund analyst Megan Tobias Neely gives readers an outsider’s insider perspective on Wall Street and its enduring culture of inequality. Hedged Out dives into the upper echelons of Wall Street, where elite white masculinity is the standard measure for the capacity to manage risk and insecurity. Facing an unpredictable and risky stock market, hedge fund workers protect their interests by working long hours and building tight-knit networks with people who look and behave like them. Using ethnographic vignettes and her own industry experience, Neely showcases the voices of managers and other workers to illustrate how this industry of politically mobilized elites excludes people on the basis of race, class, and gender. Neely shows how this system of elite power and privilege not only sustains itself but builds over time as the beneficiaries concentrate their resources. Hedged Out explains why the hedge fund industry generates extreme wealth, why mostly white men benefit, and why reforming Wall Street will create a more equal society.

Book Synopsis Music, Leisure, Education by : Roger Mantie
Download or read book Music, Leisure, Education written by Roger Mantie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores historical and philosophical connections between music, leisure, and education. Specifically, it considers how music learning, teaching, and participation can be reconceptualized in terms of leisure. Taking as its starting point the art of living and the ethical question of how one should live, the book engages a wide range of scholarship to problematize the place of non-professional music-making in historical and contemporary (Western) conceptions of the good life and the common good. Part I provides a general background on music education, school music, the work ethic, leisure studies, recreation, play, and conduct. Part II focuses on two significant currents of thought and activity during the Progressive Era in the United States, the settlement movement and the recreation movement. The examination demonstrates how societal concerns over conduct (the threat of leisure) and differing views on the purpose of music learning and teaching led to a fracturing between those espousing generalist and specialist positions. The four chapters of Part III take readers through considerations of happiness (eudaimonia) and the good life, issues of work-life balance and the play spirit, leisure satisfaction in relation to consumerism, individualism, and the common good, and finally, parenting logics in relation to extracurriculars, music learning, and serious leisure.
