Book excerpt: Nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian religious intellectuals devoted a great deal of attention to the concept of agape, or Divine Love, arguing that the Christian church is a reflection of the triune, self-sacrificing God and his love for all of creation. On account of their deliberations, these intellectuals played a key role in mediating between the Orthodox Church and modern society. Their quest for dialogue between the 'mystery of the sacred' and the 'ordinary of everyday life' remains relevant for Western societies today. In God as Love Johannes Oravecz presents a comprehensive summation of twenty-five prominent Russian religious thinkers and their thought on the concept of agape, showing in detail how they broke new ground in their various affirmations of the truth that God is love. No other book in any language treats this topic with such breadth and depth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Found God in Soviet Russia, first published in 1959, is a profoundly moving account of author John Noble's religious epiphany while confined in a brutal Soviet prison following World War II. The book also recounts Noble's harrowing survival of the massive Allied fire-bombing of Dresden, where he and his family took shelter in the cellar of their home (which was partially destroyed during the raid). Following World War II, Noble, along with his father, were arrested in East Germany and held in several prison camps in Germany including the infamous Nazi-era Buchenwald. Noble is eventually transferred to Vorkuta in far northern Russia where he works in a coal mine. Sustained by his faith and devotion to God, Noble recounts his experiences, stories of his captors and fellow inmates, and the deep faith shown by many of the other prisoners. Of special note is a chapter devoted to three nuns who, as punishment for refusing to work, were placed outdoors in sub-zero weather in only lightweight-clothing. Miraculously, the nuns came through the ordeal without frostbite and were thereafter excused from work details. Following an imprisonment of nearly 10 years, Noble was eventually released to the West, and would go on to lecture about his experiences for the remainder of his life. I Found God in Soviet Russia complements the author's other book entitled I Was a Slave in Russia, which details the day-to-day life in the Soviet gulag.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Where Love Is, There God Is Also* by Leo Tolstoy is a profound short story that delves into the themes of love, compassion, and the divine presence in everyday life. Set in a humble context, the narrative follows the life of a poor shoemaker named Martin Avdeich, who grapples with feelings of loneliness and despair after the loss of his family. As the story unfolds, Martin has a transformative dream in which he receives a divine message: he will encounter God the next day. Filled with anticipation, he prepares himself to recognize the divine in those he meets. Throughout the day, he encounters various individuals—each struggling with their own hardships. Rather than a grand revelation, Martin discovers that God's presence is manifested in acts of kindness, compassion, and genuine connection with others. Through his interactions with the needy and downtrodden, Martin learns that love is the true essence of divinity, bridging the gap between humanity and God. Tolstoy masterfully weaves a narrative that challenges readers to perceive the sacred in the ordinary, highlighting that every act of love contributes to the greater tapestry of existence. Readers are drawn to *Where Love Is, There God Is Also* for its simplicity and depth. Tolstoy’s eloquent storytelling and moral insights make this work a timeless reflection on the nature of love and spirituality. This book serves as a poignant reminder that love and compassion are pathways to experiencing the divine, encouraging readers to embrace these values in their own lives. Owning a copy of this remarkable tale is an invitation to explore the profound connections that bind us all, making it an essential addition to any literary collection.

Book excerpt: Father Walter Ciszek, S.J., author of the best-selling He Leadeth Me, tells here the gripping, astounding story of his twenty-three years in Russian prison camps in Siberia, how he was falsely imprisoned as an "American spy", the incredible rigors of daily life as a prisoner, and his extraordinary faith in God and commitment to his priestly vows and vocation. He said Mass under cover, in constant danger of death. He heard confession of hundreds who could have betrayed him; he aided spiritually many who could have gained by exposing him. This is a remarkable story of personal experience. It would be difficult to write fiction that could honestly portray the heroic patience, endurance, fortitude and complete trust in God lived by Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J.

But inside, you’re asking, “Am I enough?” No matter how good we look to others, the nagging voice of self-doubt is hard to shake. We ask questions like: If people really knew me would they still accept me? Will I be rejected when I can’t perform? Can I pull this off? What if I end up alone? Am I missing out on what life should be because I can’t shake this fear? If you find yourself having thoughts like these, Erica Wiggenhorn wants to lead you to freedom. Drawing from the story of Moses—the greatest self-doubter in the Bible—Erica shows how self-doubt is tied closely to self-reliance. It’s only when you cast yourself on God that you find the true source of strength. Are you enough? The answer is no . . . but your God certainly is. Step out in His power instead of your own and watch your confidence blossom because you’re in the hands of I AM.

Book excerpt: God, Tsar, and People brings together in one volume essays written over a period of fifty years, using a wide variety of evidence—texts, icons, architecture, and ritual—to reveal how early modern Russians (1450–1700) imagined their rapidly changing political world. This volume presents a more nuanced picture of Russian political thought during the two centuries before Peter the Great came to power than is typically available. The state was expanding at a dizzying rate, and atop Russia's traditional political structure sat a ruler who supposedly reflected God's will. The problem facing Russians was that actual rulers seldom—or never—exhibited the required perfection. Daniel Rowland argues that this contradictory set of ideas was far less autocratic in both theory and practice than modern stereotypes would have us believe. In comparing and contrasting Russian history with that of Western European states, Rowland is also questioning the notion that Russia has always been, and always viewed itself as, an authoritarian country. God, Tsar, and People explores how the Russian state in this period kept its vast lands and diverse subjects united in a common view of a Christian polity, defending its long frontier against powerful enemies from the East and from the West.

Book excerpt: A FINALIST FOR THE PEN/WEST TRANSLATION AWARD The 100th Anniversary Edition of a global classic, containing beautiful translations along with the original German text. While visiting Russia in his twenties, Rainer Maria Rilke, one of the twentieth century's greatest poets, was moved by a spirituality he encountered there. Inspired, Rilke returned to Germany and put down on paper what he felt were spontaneously received prayers. Rilke's Book of Hours is the invigorating vision of spiritual practice for the secular world, and a work that seems remarkably prescient today, one hundred years after it was written. Rilke's Book of Hours shares with the reader a new kind of intimacy with God, or the divine—a reciprocal relationship between the divine and the ordinary in which God needs us as much as we need God. Rilke influenced generations of writers with his Letters to a Young Poet, and now Rilke's Book of Hours tells us that our role in the world is to love it and thereby love God into being. These fresh translations rendered by Joanna Macy, a mystic and spiritual teacher, and Anita Barrows, a skilled poet, capture Rilke's spirit as no one has done before.

Book excerpt: Mary put her briefcase on the floor beside her as she looked out of the window of the train. Another passenger (Randall) put an identical briefcase on the rack above the seat across from where Mary and her daughters were sleeping. Then the man rushed off to the restroom. The train made a jerking motion as it took off and Randall’s briefcase fell to the floor across where Mary was sitting. Mary’s briefcase moved further down. Mary heard the noise and turned to notice the briefcase next to her and picked it up and placed it between the seats next to her. “That was quite a jolt,” Mary said as she picked up the briefcase not knowing it wasn’t hers. When Randall, a drug dealer returned to his seat, he panicked until he saw a briefcase two seats back. Randall’s briefcase now has a Bible and notebook and Mary’s briefcase is now filled with seven million dollars.
