Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is born out of two years of academic presentations on laments in the Biblical Hebrew Poetry Section at the Society of Biblical Literature (2006-2007). The topics of these papers are gathered around the theme of "voice." The two parts to this volume: 1) provide fresh readings of familiar texts as they are read through the lens of lamentation, and 2) deepen our understanding of Israel and God as lamenter and lamentee. In the second section the focus on topics such as Israel's "unbelieving faith" (i.e., strong accusations against the God on whom they have complete reliance and trust), the unrighteous lamenter, and God's acceptance and rejection of the people's lament(s), deepens our understanding of Israel's culture and practice of lamentation. The final essay notes how the expression of despair is in tension with the poetic devices that contain it.

Book excerpt: The performing arts are uniquely capable of translating a vision of an ideal or sacred reality into lived practice, allowing an audience to confront deeply held values and beliefs as they observe a performance. However, there is often a reluctance to approach distinctly religious topics from a performance studies perspective. This book addresses this issue by exploring how religious values are acted out and reflected on in classic Western theatre, with a particular emphasis on the plays put on during the Globe Theatre‘s yearlong season of 'Shakespeare and the Bible'. Looking at plays such as Much Ado About Nothing, Dr. Faustus and Macbeth, each chapter includes ethnographic overviews of the performance of these plays as well as historical and theological perspectives on the issues they address. The author also utilizes scholarship from other academics, such as Paul Tillich and Martin Buber, in examining the relationship between art and culture. This helps readers of this book to look at religion in culture, and raise questions and explore ideas about how people appraise their religious values through an encounter with a performance. The Performance of Religion: Seeing the sacred in the theatre treads new ground in bringing performance and religious studies scholarship into direct conversation with one another. As such, it is essential reading for any academic with an interest in theology, religion and ethics and their expression in culture through the performing arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letter writing at the end of the nineteenth century was an important activity for the people of France. Those who received letters from family and friends alike usually kept the hand-written texts sent to them as precious gifts. That is why this collection of letters by and to one of the greatest saints of modern times is so interesting to us today. No mere notes slapped together in distracted haste, the missives found in this volume reveal communications of warm personal sentiment along with expressions of lively spiritual development. Thérèse's efforts as a fifteen-year-old to enter Carmel before reaching the required age appear in revealing detail. This "tortuous course of a very subtle diplomacy" is set out not only by the letters of Thérèse herself, but also by those of so many others who shared her hopes and eventual victory. The translator-editor gives us 75 pages of introductory remarks to Thérèse's letters. This volume also includes 4 pages of facsimiles of Thérèse's letters.

Jesus believed it was possible to love every person we encounter: children, partners, friends, strangers, the vulnerable, the poor, enemies, and planet Earth itself. The meaning of life is not mysterious after all. According to Jesus, the purpose of our existence is to love and be loved. When we take our last breath, our life will be measured by the love we gave to each person we encountered. The secret of life, it turns out, is not a secret at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Love Letters From God" was given to me under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, much as a song, or a poem would come to you from the heart of God. These letters have been written from the viewpoint of God, as our Heavenly Father, and His desire to communicate the truth of His undying, passionate, love for us. The mission in the heart of God that came forth, as the Lord unfolded each letter to me, was to show us ourselves in the face of His Son, Jesus Christ, thus realizing our true identities, and fulfilling our destiny in Him. In revealing the truth of what He has done for us through this most precious gift, He skillfully revealed Himself in the light of the loving Father He is. As you read these letters ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the message of the Almighty God, who is also our loving, Heavenly Father.
