Littell In To Mend the World Emil L. Fackenheim points the way to Judaism's renewal in a world and an age in which all of our notions—about God, humanity, and revelation—have been severely challenged. Discusses Christian and Jewish readings of the Old Testament after the Holocaust, noting that it is apparently still too early for thinkers of either religion to cope with the subject. Criticizes Christian (especially German) theologians who continue to teach that Israel's "spiritual children" (Christian believers) have replaced the "flesh-and-blood children" (present-day Jewry). Christians reading the Old Testament fear that the Jews may still be the Chosen People; it was this fear that drove the Nazis to exterminate the Jews. After the Holocaust, Jews must question many statements of the Bible: that God never slumbers; that salvation always comes; that the dry bones will rise and live. The dead cannot be replaced, even by the new life in the State of Israel. What has been resurrected perhaps is hope, but a hope infused by doubt. Jews may yet praise divine Goodness, in the hope that in praising they may awaken it from its slumber.

Book excerpt: One of the most respected religious thinkers of our time makes an impassioned plea for the return of religion to its true purpose—as a partnership with God in the work of ethical and moral living. What are our duties to others, to society, and to humanity? How do we live a meaningful life in an age of global uncertainty and instability? In To Heal a Fractured World, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks offers answers to these questions by looking at the ethics of responsibility. In his signature plainspoken, accessible style, Rabbi Sacks shares with us traditional interpretations of the Bible, Jewish law, and theology, as well as the works of philosophers and ethicists from other cultures, to examine what constitutes morality and moral behavior. “We are here to make a difference,” he writes, “a day at a time, an act at a time, for as long as it takes to make the world a place of justice and compassion.” He argues that in today’s religious and political climate, it is more important than ever to return to the essential understanding that “it is by our deeds that we express our faith and make it real in the lives of others and the world.” To Heal a Fractured World—inspirational and instructive, timely and timeless—will resonate with people of all faiths.

This book is for everybody who wants to help shape a better future. Its chapters cover the interrelated topics of more local living, low energy lifestyles, dematerialization, design for repair, crowdsourcing, more women in authority, and the death of economics. Within a decade, all of these will be common cultural or business practice. Seven Ways to Fix the World therefore provides you with the opportunity to understand the rising agendas of tomorrow, and to help make a difference by getting ahead of the curve.

Book excerpt: Through stories at once poetic and poignant, There Is Nothing So Whole as a Broken Heart offers a powerful elixir for all who rebel against systemic violence and injustice. The contemporary renewal of Jewish anarchism draws on a history of suffering, ranging from enslavement and displacement to white nationalism and genocide. Yet it also pulls from ancestral resistance, strength, imagination, and humor—all qualities, and wisdom, sorely needed today. These essays, many written from feminist and queer perspectives, journey into ancestral and contemporary trauma in ways that are humanizing and healing. They build bridges from bittersweet grief to rebellion and joy. Through concrete illustrations of how Jewish anarchists imaginatively create their own ritual, cultural, and political practices, they clearly illuminate the path toward mending ourselves and the world.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2016 JEWISH BOOK COUNCIL AWARD FOR CONTEMPORARY JEWISH LIFE AND PRACTICE An inspiring and accessible guide, drawn from Jewish wisdom, for building the inner qualities necessary to work effectively for social justice. The world needs changing—and you’re just the person to do it! It’s a matter of cultivating the inner resources you already have. If you are serious about working for social justice and change, this book will help you bring your most compassionate, wise, and courageous self to the job. Bringing positive social change to any system takes deep self-awareness, caring, determination, and long-term commitment. But polarization, the slow pace of change, and internal conflicts among activists and organizations often leads to burnout and discouragement among the very people needed to make a difference. Changing the World from the Inside Out distills centuries of Jewish wisdom about cultivating and refining the inner life into an accessible program for building the qualities necessary to accomplish sustainable change. Through explorations of deep motivation, inner-drive, and traits like trust and anger, this book engages the reader in a journey of self-development and transformation, demonstrating that sustainable activism is indeed a spiritual practice. Jaffe offers accessible and meaningful guidance for this journey—with exercises, contemplations, and discussion points that can be used individually or in a group.

Book excerpt: In times of crisis, our faith is tested. What we thought was "solid ground" shifts, challenging us to rediscover our spiritual center. Believing that challenging times call for spiritual transformation, Protestant minister Bruce Epperly and Rabbi Lewis Solomon have partnered to plumb the wisdom of their respective religions to offer a vision for healing of ourselves and our world. Drawing on the deepest insights of Judaism and Christianity, they present a vision of spirituality that welcomes questions and struggles; that believes we are created for wholeness and abundance, even though we live by scarcity and fear; that views life as a holy adventure in which every encounter reveals the divine for those who have eyes to see. In creative partnership, they bring together tradition and innovation, affirming that: - Life is good.- We are challenged to become creators, artists, and healers of ourselves and the world.- God's love is a deep reality, stronger than fear or hate.- Life is surprising and adventurous, and pushes beyond tragedy toward new creation.- God is with us, inspiring, guiding, and comforting us in every situation.- Even in difficult times, we can choose to become partners with God in creating a world of beauty.- God is the infinite source of possibilities that enable us to face personal and national tragedy. Deeply spiritual yet practical in orientation, "Mending the World "offers a life-transforming vision of spirituality and healing for people searching for a deeper understanding of their own faith traditions, and for seekers looking for a creative vision of spirituality. Includes suggestions for spiritual practices such as prayer, meditation, healing imagery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tikkun Olam"--To Mend the World is premised on the conviction that artists and theologians have things to learn from one another, things about the complex interrelationality of life and about a coherence of things given and sustained by God. The ten essays compiled in this volume seek to attend to the lives, burdens, and hopes that characterize human life in a world broken but unforgotten, in travail but moving towards the freedom promised by a faithful Creator. They reflect on whether the world--wounded as it is by war, by hatred, by exploitation, by neglect, by reason, and by human imagination itself--can be healed. Can there be repair? And can art and theology tell the truth of the world's woundedness and still speak of its hope?
