Book excerpt: As a leader in teaching, training, and transforming boys in Detroit, Jason Wilson shares his own story of discovering what it means to “be a man” in this life-changing memoir. His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God’s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today. As the founder of one of the country’s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson has decades of experience in strengthening the physical, mental, and emotional spirit of boys and men. In Cry Like a Man, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives readers hope that healing is possible. As Wilson writes, “My passion is to help boys and men find strength to become courageously transparent about their own brokenness as I shed light on the symptoms and causes of childhood trauma and ‘father wounds.’ I long to see men free themselves from emotional incarceration—to see their minds renewed, souls weaned, and relationships restored.”

Book excerpt: Steve Harvey, the host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, can't count the number of impressive women he's met over the years, whether it's through the "Strawberry Letters" segment of his program or while on tour for his comedy shows. Yet when it comes to relationships, they can't figure out what makes men tick. Why? According to Steve it's because they're asking other women for advice when no one but another man can tell them how to find and keep a man. In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve lets women inside the mindset of a man and sheds light on concepts and questions such as: The Ninety Day Rule: Ford requires it of its employees. Should you require it of your man? The five questions every woman should ask a man to determine how serious he is. And much more . . . Sometimes funny, sometimes direct, but always truthful, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is a book you must read if you want to understand how men think when it comes to relationships.

Marshack and other women seized a much-elevated profile in music during the indie rock breakthrough while the advent of new digital technologies transformed the recording and marketing of music. Touring in a van, meeting your idols, juggling a programming job with music, keeping control and credibility, the perils of an independent record label (and the greater perils of a major)—Marshack chronicles the band’s day-to-day life and punctuates her account with excerpts from her tour reports and hard-learned lessons on how to rock, program, and teach while female. She also details the ways Poster Children applied punk’s DIY ethos to digital tech as a way to connect with fans via then-new media like pkids listservs, internet radio, and enhanced CDs. An inside look at a scene and a career, Play Like a Man is the evocative and humorous tale of one woman’s life in the trenches and online.

Book excerpt: When I thought of dedicating a book in honour of my fathers life and his work, and when I began to put together the outline, I suddenly realized how much his examples -though simple - are in fact precious and humble directives that can help men in general, any particular man, to start life well, to develop progressively through the stages of life, to fight and win in life despite the obstacles and to end life with a real sense of achievement, like a man. Examples of good men - dead or alive - are not so far-fetched anymore, and although they are not readily sought after, they are still very special. It is sad the kind of disregard that is given to concepts such as role modelling, coaching and mentoring in a world where the benefits of engaging them (the ideas and the practices) are so important and seriously needed. Jesus was and still is a very good role model, coach and mentor. While He was here on earth, His life echoed goodness of diverse kinds as He sought to fulfill His mission of genuine, radical transformation. His examples of taking care of people, submitting to authority and for diligent work etc., are tried and proven, although they are arguably not the easiest to follow. However, those who followed Him as His direct reports (Peter, John, James, the other disciples) and thousands of others who believe His method for success in life, are relentless in their efforts at encouraging as many more persons as possible, and especially men, everywhere to follow along. Our Daddy evidently had the same characteristics as these and other great men of the world, the only difference is that he operated at a different level and I am proud etching his name in my first book publication because he gave me so many good reason to. He had a heart for children, he loved helping others, he gave a lot of his time and energy to doing Church work unconditionally, he was serious about business, he connected well with all types of people, he gave of cash and kind to as many as had need, even more than he could afford and he was man enough to repent and forgive. The eight examples presented in this book might not be the greatest stepping stones for life and success in general. They most probably will never be advanced as official theories, but I am confident that they can be followed by any young man who is committed to making good out of life to the advantage of himself and his family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are dozens of books about the Boss, exploring every facet of his career. So what's left to say? Nothing objective, perhaps. But when it comes to music, objectivity is highly overrated. Robert Wiersema has been a Springsteen fan since he was a teenager. By most definitions, he's a fanatic: following tours to see multiple shows in a row, watching set lists develop in real time via the Internet, ordering bootlegs from shady vendors in Italy. His attachment is deeper than fandom, though: he's grown up with Springsteen's music as the soundtrack to his life, beginning with his working-class youth in rural British Columbia and continuing on through dreams of escape, falling in love, and becoming a father. Walk Like a Man is liner notes for a mix tape, a frank and inventive blend of biography, music criticism, and memoir over the course of thirteen tracks. Like the best mix tapes, it balances joy and sorrow, laughter seasoning the dark-night-of-the-soul questions that haunt us all. Wiersema's book is the story of a man becoming a man (despite getting a little lost along the way), and of the man and the music that have accompanied him on his journey.

Book excerpt: For years I have been saying “as soon as this is over, I’m going to write a book.” Well, it’s over…at least the physical part…and the walk has been long and hard. Clay, my second son, and I discussed writing a book for years. I’m sure his version would have been much different. I wanted him to write his own story — finding out he was gay, his feelings, and his experiences while traveling his life in California, his experiences with the new gay disease. He never did. He just lived it. His actions, his activities, and his contributions to the world are telling their own story of his life. As I was chronicling this walk, I realized Clay’s story is a story about Clay, as a person, me, as a person, and the people in our path. This book is dedicated to Clay, who was a “mixed blessing,” and to the bodies strewn along the path of the epidemic called AIDS, hewn out of history. It is my hope and the hope of those who knew and loved Clay that our experience will make someone else’s walk less painful, less lonely.

Book excerpt: Think Like a Manand heres a thought: Start Acting Like a Man The 25 mistakes men make that prevent them from finding and keeping true love This is the perfect companion book to Steve Harveys book Act Like a Lady. There are hundreds of books written for women on how to find a man. Yet, very few books that address the critical things that men do or dont do that prevent relationships from thriving and going to the next level. One of my personal goals is to promote marriage, and to help people stay in love. When Steve Harvey wrote the book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, millions of women flocked to purchase a book that was going to show them how to get a man. To be perfectly honest with you, I didnt realize the magnitude of how naive we were as women when it came to men. However, I was equally disturbed by the fact that no one was addressing what men needed to do to rectify this relationship thing. Relationships dont simply fail because of women; men play a vital role too. I could have easily written one hundred mistakes that men make, but I chose to focus on the twenty-five mistakes that I hear repeatedly from married and single women. It is my hope, that this book will cultivate a more balanced conversation between men and women. More importantly, that this book will shed some light for men on their own relationships and that they will begin to take the necessary steps to foster and create the ultimate love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first comprehensive study of plays written for male characters only, Robert Vorlicky offers a new theory that links cultural codes governing gender and the conventions determining dramatic form. Act Like a Manlooks at a range of plays, including those by O'Neill, Albee, Mamet, Baraka, and Rabe as well as new works by Philip Kan Gotanda, Alonzo Lamont, and Robin Swados, to examine how dialogue within these works reflects the social codes of male behavior and inhibits individualization among men. Plays in which women are absent are often characterized by the location of a male "other"—a female presence who distances himself from the dominant, impersonal masculine ethos and thereby becomes a facilitator of personal communication. The potential authority of this figure is so powerful that its presence becomes the primary determinant of the quality of men's interaction and of the range of male subjectivities possible. This formulation becomes the basis of an alternative theory of American dramatic construction, one that challenges traditional dramaturgical notions of realism. The book will appeal to scholars and students interested in drama, gender, race, sexuality, and American culture, as well as playwrights, teachers of playwrights, and artistic directors. It includes an extensive bibliography of more than four hundred male-cast plays and monodramas, the first such compilation and one that points to further research into a previously unexplored area.

Book excerpt: How virility and Jewishness became hallmarks of postwar New York’s combative intellectual scene In the years following World War II, the New York intellectuals became some of the most renowned critics and writers in the country. Although mostly male and Jewish, this prominent group also included women and non-Jews. Yet all of its members embraced a secular Jewish machismo that became a defining characteristic of the contemporary experience. Write like a Man examines how the New York intellectuals shared a uniquely American conception of Jewish masculinity that prized verbal confrontation, polemical aggression, and an unflinching style of argumentation. Ronnie Grinberg paints illuminating portraits of figures such as Norman Mailer, Hannah Arendt, Lionel and Diana Trilling, Mary McCarthy, Norman Podhoretz, Midge Decter, and Irving Howe. She describes how their construction of Jewish masculinity helped to propel the American Jew from outsider to insider even as they clashed over its meaning in a deeply anxious project of self-definition. Along the way, Grinberg sheds light on their fraught encounters with the most contentious issues and ideas of the day, from student radicalism and the civil rights movement to feminism, Freudianism, and neoconservatism. A spellbinding chronicle of mid-century America, Write like a Man shows how a combative and intellectually grounded vision of Jewish manhood contributed to the masculinization of intellectual life and shaped some of the most important political and cultural debates of the postwar era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RIDICULE (relationships, intimacy, deception, immorality, commitment, ugliness, love exposed). Women are ridiculed by men. Men subject women to contemptuous and dismissive language and behavior. Men treat women as if they were unworthy of any true acts of kindness, honor, or respect. Men rob women of their godly spiritual significance on earth. Men have been able to do these things because they have deceitfully made women feel esteemed for exploiting their body, and they have used money to ensure women accept degradation with a smile. Women have thus fallen in love with money, and they covet the material things money can buy. Now women partake in the unfruitful works of darkness instead of exposing them (Eph. 5:11). Women no longer adorn themselves in respectable apparel or dress modestly. They fashion themselves in fancy hairstyles and adorn themselves in expensive jewelry and costly attire (1 Tim. 2:9). Simply put, women dress seductively. The attention women receive from dressing seductively fascinates them. However, their bewitchment brings attention to themselves in the wrong way. Therefore, men do not view them in the purest of ways or intent. Appearance limits women to focusing on who they are from a worldview instead of who they are in Christ. The error allows men to lead women down a path of prostitution, whoredom, wickedness, and abuse! Think Like a Lady, Not Like a Man spiritually and secularly exposes what men have done to women in a world system that ignores God.

Book excerpt: An honest and practical handbook that reveals important insights into relationships between men and women and work, Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, is a must-read for every woman who wants to leverage her power in the workplace. Women make up almost half of today's labor force, but in corporate America they don't share half of the power. Only four of the Fortune 500 company CEOs are women, and it's only been in the last few years that even half of the Fortune 500 companies have more than one female officer. A major reason for this? Most women were never taught how to play the game of business. Throughout her career in the super-competitive, male-dominated media industry, Gail Evans, one of the country's most powerful executives, has met innumerable women who tell her that they feel lost in the workplace, almost as if they were playing a game without knowing the directions. In this book, she reveals the secrets to the playbook of success and teaches women at all levels of the organization--from assistant to vice president--how to play the game of business to their advantage. Men know the rules because they wrote them, but women often feel shut out of the process because they don't know when to speak up, when to ask for responsibility, what to say at an interview, and a lot of other key moves that can make or break a career. Sharing with humor and candor her years of lessons from corporate life, Gail Evans gives readers practical tools for making the right decisions at work. Among the rules you will learn are: • How to Keep Score at Work • When to Take a Risk • How to Deal with the Imposter Syndrome • Ten Vocabulary Words That Mean Different Things to Men and Women • Why Men Can be Ugly, and You Can't • When to Quit Your Job
